Well at least we know it's not Orbiston Parva. South East England yes. Near the film studio, Ok. But where?

Alan Twinam advises that this is Benskin House, formerly part of Benskin's Brewery and now Watford Museum, on Lower High Street in Watford, Hertfordshire.

Never mind the location, whatever happened to Wonderloaf, the staple of the nation, always fresh, would grow mould before it would dry out, wrapped in waxed paper, and now gone.

Real or a set?

Keith Wickham has found a reference to the film on an intenet thread that says the small railway station is Shepperton and thinks it's likely that the town seen in long shot is also Shepperton.

Same station is in “On The Fiddle” (otf005)Shepperton station. Robin J. Brooks

Prison? Keith Wickham says that this is in St.Albans in Hertfordshire: "The prison has long gone, but the front remains, as I think it's listed. It was also used as the prison door on the opening titles of Porridge." Thanks Keith.

Old prison gates, Junction of Grimston Road and Stanhope Road, St.Albans, Herts. Keith Wickham identified the location and sent the photo.

Fine house. This is/was a residential school for girls called the Claremont Fan Court School situated in Esher, Surrey. I used to deliver milk there in the 1970s. Recently segments of the TV series 'Hornblower' were filmed there. Good background informatiion from Bob Brumpton.

Lovely factory . . . a model though. The building it was based on was probably Poplar House, once one of the HQ buildings of BP Research Centre, Sunbury on Thames, Middlesex. David Barnes advises that it stood at the corner of Chertsey Road and Cadbury Road but was demolished less than 15 years ago and replaced by another office block.

Same lovely factory but viewed from a meadow now occupied by King George Close, corner of Cadbury Road and Grovely Road. Built about 20 years ago. David Barnes.

Same monument and horse trough, see 004. But real? I've got my doubts. Everything seems to be too close and convenient. You were so right to have your doubts, Gordon Thomson tells us that this shot right the way through to 009l were Shepperton Studios backlot. (RL)
