Rainbow Jacket, The

At Lingfield Park races, disgraced jockey Sam Lilly attempts to gain entrance to the course. Joe Blackwell explains that this entrance stands on Racecourse Road, Lingfield in Surrey.

Proving the location, Joe captured the old entrance which he hasn't seen in use for a number of years.

When denied access, Sam breaks through a fence onto the course where he meets Georgie Crain, an aspiring young jockey. Lingfield Park on Racecourse Road in Dormansland, Lingfield.

Simon Cox provides this comparison shot which shows that a lot has changed. The stand and golf club out of view to the right were demolished and a hotel built on the site as well as alterations made to the Stewards Box above the stand. The iron railings have been replaced with a wooden fence and there are no crowds at the races this year!

Georgie starts training after Sam convinces his Mother that the young lad could become a top jockey in the future. Unidentified location.

Sam calls to Georgie to sit up straight in the saddle. This is a back projection featuring, in a later frame, a London Trolleybus passing and is identified by Antony Blair as the corner of Uxbridge Road and Craven Close in Hayes, Middlesex.

Georgie proves that he's more than capable on horseback.

At Sandown Park, Sam tries to convince Mr Ross to take Georgie on as an apprentice. Sandown Park in Surrey.

After failing to persuade Mr Ross, Sam finds Georgie at Harry's mobile snack bar.

Sam approaches trainer Geoffrey Tyler (Edward Underdown) as he arrives with his wife, Monica (Honor Blackman).

Lord Logan (Robert Morley) arrives to speak with his trainer and Sam walks despondently back to Georgie.

After a race in which his horse wins, Lord Logan and Tyler watch as the jockey falls and the horse runs away.

Tyler sees Georgie ride the loose horse in.

Geordie is led into the paddock, still mounted on Lord Logan's horse. Outside the Weighing Room at Sandown Park racecourse on Portsmouth Road, Esher in Surrey identified by Joe Blackwell.

The Parade Ring has since been moved as Joe's view shows.

Tyler gives out the address to where he should report after Lord Logan tips Geordie and enlists him into his stable. Located by Joe Blackwell, this is facing the Weighing Room at Sandown Park.

In Joe's comparison, the arched windows remain in place behind the advertising.

Sam and Barbara see Georgie off as he embarks on his new career. This should be London's Liverpool Street station, before years of regeneration and rebuilding changed the scenery, as that is where trains to Newmarket departed from at the time of filming.

Georgie arrives in Newmarket. The station stands at the end of Station Approach, Newmarket, Suffolk. Although still standing, the station building is no longer in use having been replaced with a short length of platform and 'bus' shelters further along the now single line.

The young lad leaves the station, in awe that he is in Newmarket. Newmarket station at Newmarket. What's left of the building is now in use as offices.

In town, a jockey's outfitter is gazed into. Newmarket's High Street where Colin P. Boyce, could he be related, points out Boyce and Rogers which stood at numbers 112/114 . . .

Paul Horner sends us his shot of the High Street now, commenting that the baroque building in the film was the Carlton Hotel, demolished in the early 1970's. Replaced by "Boots the Chemists". He also notes that the building to its left has been rendered and that "Maypole" is now "USA Chicken & Burgers".......oh dear...ever changing times. (RL)

Once inside, Georgie approaches Tommy Adams (Herbert C. Walton), looking for Mr Boss.

After intense training, a visit from Lord Logan secures Georgie's first race. The Links, Newmarket in Suffolk.

Bookies erect their boards and prepare for the day's races. Joe Blackwell identifies the Rowley Mile at Newmarket.

At the course, Georgie takes a look around the buildings and finds a room in which he sees his name, newly painted alongside boards displaying E. Mercer and L. Piggot.

The horses are paraded by their grooms in the paddock as Georgie puts on his colours. Joe Blackwell advises that this is the Parade Ring at Newmarket Racecourse.

The building still stands but Joe found that it's no longer facing the Parade Ring.

Following some last minute instructions from Tyler, Georgie rides his horse to the start line and the race begins. The Rowley Mile at Newmarket identified by Joe Blackwell.

Joe discovered that so much has been landscaped and rebuilt.

A photo finish sees Georgie coming second against the favourite in his first race.

Back in London, Sam discusses the race with Barbara. The crossroads of Brook Lane North, Brook Road South, Hamilton Road and New Road in Brentford. Behind the Royal Oak public house stands Brentford FC's ground.

The Royal Oak now seeks a new landlord and some of B.F.C. ground re-developed. (RL)

Sam walks through the streets on the morning after telling Georgie of his debt problems with Fenwick. But where are we?

Clive found exactly where "we are", looking north from Church Road, Lingfield, Surrey to the Church of St Peter and St Paul. (RL)

The signal is spotted letting Sam know that Georgie will help him out. Graham Boakes confirms that this is also the old town of Lingfield adding "I was born just down the road and the area is totally unchanged today."

At the next Lingfield Park meeting, the crowd wait in anticipation as horses and riders come under starter's orders but whilst riding the favourite, Georgie 'throws' the race to get Sam out of trouble with Fenwick.

Another view of the location now by Simon Cox who tells us "The biggest changes have been to the actual racecourse. In the 70s the UK's first all weather track was installed at Lingfield and that meant massive changes to the back straight of the existing turf course."

After Georgie is exonerated, and tells the stewards about the good in Sam, he goes on to win his next race . . . and a few more.

Punters place their bets as young Georgie Crain rides more winners. The middle of the course at Sandown Park in Surrey with the old Tote building to the right identified by Stephen Linsell who adds that the building was still there the last time he visited but isn't in use any more.

Prior to his first race in years, Sam speaks with Lord Stoneleigh (Wilfrid Hyde-White) who needs a jockey for the St Leger. Stephen Linsell locates this as the entrance to the paddock at Lingfield Park in Surrey.

St Leger day arrives with Sam and Georgie both riding in the same race. As the caption says, Doncaster in Yorkshire.

Sam suggests to Barbara betting on both of them to win.

They're off . . . . in a race prior to which Georgie has been bribed to lose by Bernie Rudd. Joe Blackwell again confirms Doncaster Racecourse in Yorkshire.

Changes are apparent in Joe's comparison including the removal of the spoil heap.

The crowd watch as Sam and Georgie compete for the first time.

The jockeys return to the paddock to the sound of booing when Georgie wins after the intervention of Sam towards the winning post. Joe Blackwell identifies this as outside the Weighing Room at Doncaster Racecourse.

Joe explains that the building now serves as apart-time bar and restaurant.

Following an enquiry and now suspended from racing for for life, Sam leaves the changing rooms. Joe Blackwell locates this as the Weighing Room at Doncaster Racecourse.
