We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Centuries ago, Sir Hugo Baskerville pursues an escaping Maid across Grimpen Moor. IMDB and Wikipedia advise that filming took place on Chobham Common and at Frensham Ponds in Surrey. Gordon Thomson advises that this is Stony Jump which is confirmed by William White who adds this is Churt Common, adjacent to Frensham Common, and the shot is taken from the summit of Stony Jump looking down and south.

A panoramic shot of Grimpen Moor brings the story into Victorian times. Gordon says that this is an actual view of Dartmoor in Devon. (RL)

The camera pans across Dartmoor. Location confirmed by Gordon. (RL)

Perkins (Sam Kydd) drives Dr. Richard Mortimer, Dr. Watson and Sir Henry Baskerville across the moor. Gordon Thomson places this as Vampire Flats, with Frensham Little Pond in the background. (RL)

William White provides this compariso, without the prop signpost, taken from The Kings Ridge over Vampire Flats.

Dr. Richard Mortimer (Francis de Wolff) listens as Perkins tells of an escaped convict on the moor. Frensham Ponds is where scenes from 'Carry on Columbus', 'The Ware Case', 'Carry on Jack', 'The Touchables' and 'The Night Caller' were filmed. Gordon confirms this also to be Vampire Flats, with Frensham Little Pond in the background. (RL)

Frensham Little Pond, taken from The Kings Ridge by William White.

Sir Henry visits the cottage where Stapleton and his daughter Cecille live. More moor. A problem no more, actually Dartmoor advises Gordon. (RL)

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson discuss the case as they are driven to the home of Dr. Mortimer. According to Gordon Thomson this is near to Frensham Little Pond and William White adds that the angle of this capture is slightly towards the north. The high point on the horizon is the pyramid shaped Crooksbury Hill and to the east is the western end of the long low ridge of the Hogs Back that runs from Aldershot in the west to Guildford in the east.

The view now from William.
