Anthony Batty advises that the Peter Tavey Inn gained a brief moment of fame in the 1960s when it was one of the locations used in the film Run Wild, Run Free starring Sir John Mills. Several villagers served as extras in scenes shot at the Inn … and Richard Dorrington adds, “The boggy scenes were filmed near Whitehouse south east of Princetown.   Also Fox Tor Mire nearby.” As info comes in, a reboot of this title is on the vast “to-do” list.

Leslie Retallick advises that this and the next image are of Newton Abbot, in South Devon. The large cooling tower in the background no longer exists as the power station was demolished many years ago. The market scene in the film was also shot at Newton Abbot market.

Steven Ravenscroft adds details that the camera position was on the hillside on Courtenay Road, and it zooms through the brick chimneys of a property on Bowden Hill. (Google shot is from the other way)... The demolished cooling tower was on what is now Templers Road, and the gasometers on the left hand side at the top of Marsh Road. Those with sharp eyes will see the small steeple on top of the Church House on Queen Street, and just to the right of it the four windows on the white façade of what is now Choice Words. (SJ)

A closer view.

Another Google shot from Steven who identifies the white bricked/dark roofed building at the top of the shot next to the gasometer when the camera has fully zoomed in as the, now, ATS Tyres outlet at the junction of Wharf Road and The Avenue: looks like the windows were bricked up and painted white some time ago. A rock on Dartmoor. A real challenge. But sums up the film nicely... Janis Lyon tells us that the bog the colt gets stuck in was man made by Jack Venner, her great uncle... Andrew Wilson names this as Great Mis Tor, discovered by him but, just in case, he wrote to John Mills who confirmed the location from Denham. He knows the letter survives in his house somewhere!
