Can you help:

If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

The film opens on a London building site. Dr. Roland-François Lack advises that "the building site is the development around Stag Place in London SW1". Confirming the location, Jonathan Lingham adds that in the background can be seen, from left to right, the Edwardian mansion block at 12-14 Stafford Place in the centre distance, the back of the Phoenix public house on Palace Street and a little to the right a late Victorian or Edwardian mansion block called Audley House which would place the camera in the middle of the construction site of Eland House on Stag Place. Jonathan recognised the view as he started his civil service career in what was then the Ministry of Overseas Development based in Eland House. "The building was already looking rather worn by then, and was pulled down in 1991."

The best angle one can obtain with current high rise buildings blocking the original view. This is closer and to the right, from Cathedral Walk, showing the back of the Phoenix and., over Palace Street, 3 Buckingham Mansions on the corner with Stafford Place. SJ

High on the site's scaffolding, Jack Barrett (Peter McEnery) checks detail with his foreman before spotting a police car below. The two would now be standing in an office inside Cardinal Place on Victoria Street SW1. Cardinal Place was built in the early 2000s and swallowed the footprint of both the building they are standing on the scaffolding of and Esso House behind them. Information from James Livingstone.

As Sergeant Bridie enters the site office, 'Boy' Barrett turns from the foreman and runs.

The young man runs through half build office blocks. The tower of Westminster Cathedral rises in the centre background and Michael Bradley explains that the construction site was occupied by Watney's Stag Brewery until it was demolished in 1959.

Westminster Cathedral from more or less the same spot in this contribution from James Livingstone.

Barratt leaves the construction site and flees along city streets. At one time, Peter McEnery used to buy war-game soldiers from John Tunstill in his Lambeth shop.

Looking along Palace Street towards Victoria Street. James Livingstone's sharp eye found this one.

A telephone box is spotted. Looking back along Palace Street from the junction of Wilfred Street.

The Stag Place development was built by McAlpine in the early sixties but only Portland House and the grey apartment block survive. The red building replaced the one being built in the screen capture. The completed development appears in the opening titles of 'The Prisoner'. Information and image from James Livingstone.

Barratt reaches the call box and phones Eddy Stone, telling him to retrieve a package from his wardrobe. James Livingstone tells us that "this is Buckingham Place facing Palace Street and the background building is the other side of the one surrounded by scaffolding seen earlier."

Roland-François Lack provided a streetview picture (16/11/14) noting that "the block to the left with its protruding door frame and rows of five windows is No 1 Buckingham Place, the London home of Patrick McGoohan's No 6". A more accurate angle now. SJ

A police car arrives outside Mrs Pascoe's lodging house where Barratt and Eddy live. Although John Tuthill was pretty sure that this was Walton Street in Chelsea, Ian McD found Waterford Road just over a mile and a half away in Fulham SW6.

Ian McD avoids the parked cars to confirm the location with this view looking towards New Kings Road.

Detective Sergeant Bridie (John Cairney) and his Detective Constable go inside to question the landlady as Eddy escapes carrying the package.

Looking over parked cars to a row of terraced houses.

Complimenting Ian McD's location find in the previous capture that Christopher Matheson had been wrestling with for for years he sends this Google Earth shot showing that the concrete post on the extreme right has survived. As a result of the police entering the house to the right of the post it means that Boy Barratt and Donald Churchill live at no. 48. (RL)

After drawing a blank at the lodging house, the Sergent returns to Fulham Police Station. This is King's Road at Milman's Street SW10 located by SJ.

Rather different now but the pedestrian crossing is still in the same place.

Bridie gets out of the car. Facing north-east on King's Road. The location also appears in 'An Alligator Named Daisy', 'Lost' and 'Sapphire'.

Peter provides this comparison.

The two officers enter to report to Detective Inspector Harris. John Gorton advises that this is outside the old Chelsea police station on King's Road which was in use up until about 1938 then left empty.

Much altered.

Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde) heads to his club. Cleveland Row in London SW1 identified by Peter, which also features in 'The Ballad of Tam Lin'.

And Peter also provides this 'now' shot.

The successful advocate goes inside where he meets Lord Charles Fullbrook. Cleveland Row located by Peter.

Captured by Peter, with new and refurbished buildings in the distance..

Having collected the package concealing a scrap book containing information about Farr, Barratt leaves a West End telephone box after trying to call the barrister at the club. Leicester Square WC2 with the Monseigneur News Theatre prominent to the right.

Peter took this shot with a work of art now replacing phone box.

Barratt makes his way to Harold Doe's bookshop. Running between Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane this is St Martin's Court in London WC2 advises Tonyk.

The same location now by Brian Frazer.

After seeking help but being sent away by the proprietor, 'Boy' Barratt leaves the shop and attempts to call Farr again. Facing east in St. Martin's Court.

Brian also captured the reverse point of view.

As evening draws in, Farr is given a lift home by Lord Fullbrook. The camera is positioned outside the Tate Gallery with the bus on the right an 88 exiting Atterbury Street. The route has since been diverted. The building behind the bus in the background was the 'Millbank Laundry' (I had an aunt who worked there) since long gone as has the tower block which replaced it. John Tuthill. (SJ)

This is taken outside the Tate with Atterbury Street to the right. SJ

Carrying his bag containing the scrap book, Barratt approaches a car showroom. Brompton Road in London SW3.

Peter found that the former showroom is currently home to shops.

The young man knocks on the showroom window to attract the attention of Phip. Looking out onto Brompton Road.

The same location, centered on the downpipe. Picture from Peter.

Barratt asks a nervous Phip if he can drive him out of London, but the car salesman can't oblige. Brompton Road SW3.

Peter observes that the lads would now be either side of the shop window at the redeveloped garage site.

Frank Jeffries (Alan Howard) and Sylvie (Dawn Beret) leave a cinema as Barratt arrives in town after getting a lift out of London. Outside the Regal Cinema on High Street, Uxbridge. The cinema closed in 1977 and has seen use as various night clubs since the mid 1980s.

And closed again on the 30th June 2018. (RL)

The couple stop as Barratt calls to his friend Frank. This is outside Randalls department store on Vine Street in Uxbridge which was also seen in 'Twisted Nerve'.

A three quarter photograph of a closed department store with pavement awnings.

Christopher Matheson has sent us a photograph of Randalls that he took in 2015 because he liked the building, not knowing that it would be such an excellent record of the Grade ll listed store and this screen capture. (RL)

After getting a lift towards the coast from a lorry driver, Barratt again tries to call Farr before a policeman sees him entering a transport cafe.

Whilst attempting to flush the scrap book away at the cafe, Barratt is arrested and brought back to the police station in Fulham.

The same location now from Peter.

Sergeant Bridie escorts Barratt into the building. King's Road at the junction with Milman's Street spotted by Stephen Richards.

Panning right, Peter takes another.

Having been called in by Detective Inspector Harris, Farr leaves the police station after examining the scrap book which contained information about him and learning that Barratt had hanged himself in his cell. Facing Milman's Street from King's Road.

Peter took this modern comparison of the location.

Melville Farr walks with colleagues. To the right stands Temple Church in Church Court between Inner and Middle Temples, London EC4 as identified by Harry Beamish.

And Harry took this shot to confirm.

Eddy Stone approaches Farr with a photograph of the barrister with Barratt. The passageway between Crown Office Row and Carpmael Building that leads to Elm Court, Middle Temple.

Location identification and proof by Harry again.

Mickey (David Evans) and P.H. (Hilton Edwards) walk towards a post box with mail to send. St Martin's Place to the east of Trafalgar Square.

The same spot captured by Peter.

Now working with Farr to seek out the people who were blackmailing 'Boy', Eddy Stone (Donald Churchill) visits Henry, a hairdresser. The corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Earlham Street in WC2.

George Marks provides this comparison shot.

When questioned, Mr. Henry (Charles Lloyd-Pack) tells Eddy that he's selling his shop and moving to Canada. Looking onto Shaftesbury Avenue from the corner of Earlham Street.

George pans around the same location now.

Eddy leaves just as a taxi brings 'Tiny' Calloway to the shop. Next door to the Marquis of Granby and facing Cambridge Circus from Earlham Street.

George takes another.

When his wife leaves him after asking questions about his relationship with Barratt, Farr visits the local church. St Nicholas and St Mary, Church Street in Chiswick.

The ivy's gone from the tombstone: otherwise unchanged. SJ

Believing that Barratt was attempting to blackmail him, the lawyer continues his stroll. The church was also the only location used in 'Quatermass and the Pit' and was also seen in 'Time Bomb' and 'The Mother'.

Now SJ

The camera follows Farr through the church yard.

As do I. SJ

Farr leave the church yard and heads towards home. Powells Walk in Chiswick W4.

Little change. SJ

Keys are taken from his pocket as Farr nears the front door to his house. Tony Reeves' book tells us that this is Strawberry House, with Moreton House next door, on Chiswick Mall W4.

The same location by Jason Robinson.

At Lord Fullbrook's request, Farr joins him at Paul Mandrake's home in Nightingale Mews. As seen in 'Fallen Idol', this is Barrack Yard in Belgravia SW1.

Barrack Yard now.

Farr climbs the stair to the studio flat. Barrack Yard in SW1.

The same flat that was used in 'Blind Date'.

After learning that Lord Fullbrook, Mandrake and Calloway are all being blackmailed because they are gay, Farr drives home.

Looking west into the afternoon sun. SJ

The Bristol 406 slows to a halt. Chiswick Mall in W4.

That sun glare. Morton House and next door was seen in 'Howards End', 'Circle of Danger' and the TV series 'The Golden Bowl', as London Movie Guide will tell you. SJ

Laura Farr (Sylvia Syms) stands across the road looking over the Thames. Hammersmith Bridge crosses the river in the background. Catherine Deneuve marched across it in 'Repulsion' and Richard Widmark came to a sticky end in 'Night and the City'.

From a similar angle now.

Farr crosses to join his wife. In the background stands Strawberry House.

Now, by Jason.

The two talk after Melville asks Laura to come home. Chiswick Mall alongside the Thames. Dirk Bogarde was also here with Julie Christie in 'Darling'.

The same location now.

Laura asks about her husbands true feelings. Chiswick Mall again.

Now.

Eddy approaches the bar that Phip, Mr. Henry, P.H. and Mickey all used along with Barratt. The theatre sign reads 'Talk of the Town' which was at the Hippodrome on Charing Cross Road and this is at the corner with Cecil Court says Adrian Grepnold.

The doorway has suffered some indignity and the Hippodrome is currently shrouded in tarpaulins but it's the same place confirms Adrian. J.T. adds "I think I bought a suit at the shop on the corner, a 'natty gents outfitters' some 30 years ago". It's still Lipman's who specialise in hiring dress suits but both shops seem to have messed up their shopfronts since then.

After Sandy the blackmailer makes contact with Phip, Farr arrives at the showroom and asks for a test drive in a Rolls Royce.

Brompton Road SW3. The garage has disappeared and the location redeveloped. Discovered by David Neicho.

Phip gets into the car.

Looking towards the Michelin Building and Fulham Road on Brompton Road in SW3. Located and captured by one of our regular contributors, David Neicho.

The engine is started and Phip drives his passenger away. Facing south on Brompton Road with the Michelin Building to the left of centre.

A great comparison shot by Peter.

On the journey, Farr questions Phip. Knightsbridge with the Harvey Nichols store on the corner of Sloane Street in the centre.

A little further to the left please. SJ

The car is watched by a youth on a scooter as Phip tells Farr about his next rendezvous with the blackmailer. Bowater House, Knightsbridge SW1, also seen in 'What Every Woman Wants' from 1962, 'For Members Only', 'Toomorrow', 'The Primitives', 'Sebastian' and 'Otley'.

Redeveloped into very expensive flats. SJ

That evening, Farr goes to the rendezvous point instead of Phip. Grosvenor Road near the King William IV public house in SW1 with Battersea Power Station across the Thames. The location was seen in 'Herostratus' and 'Underground'.

With thanks to Peter's shot of 23/2/15, here's a replacement with the same tree in the foreground. SJ

The former Caledonia Street running between the King William IV and Telford Terrace.

The lamp is a good pointer here as well as St Gabriel's Primary School sticking out on the right. SJ

Farr tells Sandy (Derren Nesbitt) that he wants to buy letters and film negatives as the blackmailer sits on his Lambretta. The roadway serving flats off Churchill Gardens Road in SW1.

And here's, err, a nice white van. However, seriously, this is the right place as I even checked that the drain relief, visible in 1961, is still there and it is ... behind the rear wheel! SJ

Scott Hankin brings his sister Laura home to find graffiti about her husband daubed on the garage door.

Chiswick Mall, London W4 (RL)

Farr receives a telegram in chambers and, after cancelling all his afternoon appointments, visits the school where Laura works. The building is now part of Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School on Ravenscourt Avenue in W6. The location was also seen in 'Secrets of a Windmill Girl', 'A Hitch in Time', 'Spare the Rod' and 'Supersonic Saucer'.

Now. SJ

The barrister sees his wife in the school yard. The background building still stands on Ravenscourt Avenue.

With an extension hiding the railway line. SJ

Laura tells her husband about the graffiti before the couple enter the school. Off Ravenscourt Avenue in Hammersmith.

Hard to make out the ornate window in the door. SJ

Farr explains that if he hands the blackmailer to the police it will be the end of his career. Looking out from the school building towards Ravenscourt Avenue and the railway viaduct carrying the Piccadilly and District Lines between Stamford Brook and Ravenscourt Park.

Even if I had been allowed into the playground the large school extension would have obstructed most of the view. (RL)

As Farr tells the police of the blackmailing, a Detective (Victor Brooks) and his colleague approach Mickey and P.H. to arrest them for writing begging letters.

Chiltern Street looking towards Blandford Street, London W1 (RL)

The time is checked as Farr carries out his mission. St Martin-in-the-Fields stands to the left whilst Nelson's Column towers on the right.

The same location by Peter.

The clock of St Martin-in-the-Fields confirms the time.

And Peter took time out to get this shot.

Farr heads to Doe's bookshop carrying a payment for the blackmailers.

George Marks captured the Salisbury public house on the corner of St Martin's Lane and St Martin's Court.

In a doorway of the New Theatre, Detective Inspector Harris (John Barrie) spots Farr as he heads towards Doe's bookshop. The theatre was renamed the Albery Theatre in the 1973.

George took this outside the building that was renamed again in 2006 to become the Noël Coward Theatre.

After exchanging money for incriminating letters and negatives concealed in a book, Farr leaves the shop. St Martin's Court again identified by Tonyk.

George Marks provides the proof.

Farr joins the Detectives and another officer reports that the money was taken from the bookshelf. Looking north on St. Martins Lane WC2.

Another by George.

Miss Benham (Margaret Diamond) makes her way from Doe's bookshop. St Martin's Court in WC2 with The Salisbury public house on the corner of St Martin's Lane identified by Tonyk.

The same location by George Marks.

A taxi carries Miss Benham and the money away. Facing south on St. Martins Lane.

Peter advises that the defunct pub on the corner used be nicknamed "The Corner Pin".

Harris, Bridie and Farr follow Miss Benham. St. Martin's Lane once again.

The same location captured by Peter.

Miss Benham arrives at the apartment block where Sandy is waiting.

Jules Ballantyne found the location....69 Earl's Court Square, London SW5 and this replaces her GEV shot from Nov. '16. SJ

The woman pays the cabbie before entering the building where Sandy is inspecting his latest incriminating photographs.
