Additional Information:

“Before he became an actor, a teenage Cary Elwes worked as a Production Assistant on the film. He was chauffeur to Roger Moore, and drove him to work numerous times. Being young and driving Moore, he goes on to say that he was “a nervous wreck” being constantly afraid of getting in a car accident and killing Moore, so he drove very slowly. On one occasion Moore calmly looked up from his newspaper he was reading while being driven to work by Elwes and stated politely, “You can speed up a little if you want to.” He later wrote about his experience working on the film in his book, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of Princess Bride (2014).” Some extra trivia from Michael Bradley.

If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

Wearing a clown's outfit, 009 takes a knife in the back and falls into the water. Depicting Germany, the action took place at Orton Mere in Nene Park near Peterborough. (IJ)

Ian took his shot in daylight.

Nick Knight provides this capture of 009, having escaped his captors [through Black Park] and arriving at the British Ambassador's residence in East Berlin. In fact the car park of Heatherden Hall, Pinewood with the entrance to the left. (RL)

Lake Palace/Jagmandir ... Seen in the distance is the island of Jagminder on Lake Pichola. This was used to depict the external views of Octopussy’s palace. (IJ) ... Michael Bradley adds that Ingrid Pitt has an uncredited voice cameo as Octopussy's galley mistress.

Arriving at Lake Palace ... Most of the filming of Octopussy’s palace was filmed on the island that is occupied by the luxury heritage Lake Palace hotel. Kamal arrives aboard Octopussy’s personal exclusive barge. (Cast and unit crew stayed at the hotel itself.) (IJ)

Lily pond, Lake Palace … Kamal is escorted to his meeting with Octopussy by her attendants.

Teddy confirms it

Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin. After his discussion with M, Bond is driven through the infamous border crossing from the American sector to the Russian sector. At the time of filming, all the security regulations and protocols existed between east and west. The Mercedes used in the film stopped in ‘no man's land’ and returned to the American sector. (IJ)

It all looks very different today and what'smore the original booth was removed in 1990. A smaller version now stands on the very site however. This photo was provided by Hans. (SJ)

Octopussy’s circus is being transported from Karl Marx Stadt in east Germany to USAF Feldstadt in west Germany. The Nene Valley preservation railway near Peterborough was used for the sequence. Wansford station depicts Karl Marx Stadt station. Here Bond is secretly about to hide underneath the freight wagon. (IJ)

Ian's photo on the station.

This is Wansford Level Crossing, Old Great North Road, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, a moment's drive east off the A1... Note that Wansford station is on the left of the level crossing. On the right is the railway bridge from which Bond’s car was blown into the river below (following cap)

And it is remarkably unchanged. SJ

Orton Mere station. The signal man diverts Bond’s car onto the adjacent track shortly before meeting a train coming from the opposite direction. (IJ)

Ian enjoys the railway.

Nene Valley ... Specifically this is the railway bridge with the Wansford level crossing on the right. A narrow escape for Bond and the man in the boat! (IJ)

The Nene River is rather more serene today. This is the north side of The Nene Valley Steam Railway, also seen in Top Secret! and GoldenEye. SJ

Overton (Ferry Meadows) station. The train is about to depart in order to cross the east/west border. (IJ) ... Manuel Gurtner adds some detail. "The Circus train consists of DSB S Class 2-6-4T No. 740 (Frichs, 1928), disguised as No. 62 015 of GDR Reichsbahn, two LMS freight carriages of type CCT (Metro-Cammell, 1938), CIWL dining car No. 2975 of type RF (Reggiane works, 1927), NSB teak coach No. 601 of type TO (built 1922), CIWL sleeping car No. 3916 of type YT (Nivelles works, 1949), which can be seen here in front of one of two further LMS freight carriages of type CCT (Metro-Cammell, 1938)."

German town, a set methinks. Ronald Westrenen suggests that this was modelled on Ritterplatz, Braunfels in Hessen. (RL) ... And Ian adds, "This was an existing set at Pinewood that had been constructed for the film ‘The Hunchback of Norte-Dame’. No doubt the production team were happy to make use of someone else’s work! It forms part of the sequence depicting Bond hastily driving to Octopussy’s circus to diffuse the bomb."

  • 'Now' required

Filmed at RAF Upper Heyford this depicts USAF Feldstadt in west Germany where Octopussy’s circus parade arrives ... This backs up Morris Leach's identification and he also mentions the base's appearance in The Fourth Protocol and World War Z.

Utah, probably Canyonlands: looks a like a second unit shot ... And the final word from IJ. The aerial landscape and stunt work footage was filmed above the landform of Hurricane Mesa, close to the small city of the same name in Utah. This capture would have been created at Pinewood including SFX and edited into the location footage.
