League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, The

Jeremy Dyson (the fourth writer of the League of Gentlemen, being played in this film by Michael Sheen) is running around trying to find his phone to pitch a bad idea. He is depicted as being inside the buildings near Baily Lighthouse on the headland at Baily, just south of Howth, Fingal in Ireland.

Pat Cleary serves up a great 'now' shot of the same Baily Lighthouse on the SE tip of Howth Head, Dublin. It's looking a little more welcoming in the daylight!

A familiar view over Royston Vasey...actually this seems to be a shot of the village of Marsden in West Yorkshire. This is a few miles north of Hadfield, where much of the LOG television series was shot.

Site visitor Aston Martin provided the new location photo and says that this is on top of Holme Moor, (which is part of Marsden Moor next to a public footpath). This short flat area looks down towards Marsden. Of course was also the location of the Local shop. Two good focal points are the long street which goes up over the valley on the left and the large white building halfway up the hillside on the right side of the road. He also mentions that the area is over accessible on foot, there is a track but it is very rocky and used to access the Moor by farmers only. Aston also included his own Royston Vasey sign that he got from D&D newsagents in Hadfield.

Local calamity vet Mr Chinnery (Mark Gatiss) is about to perform a proceedure on a giraffe at the zoo.... This location was helpfully confirmed to be Heythrop Zoo in Oxfordshire by Catherine Howes.

....and a small local gathering, still at Heythrop Zoo, have come to watch things unfold. But they are going to get more than they expected. Heythrop Zoological Gardens is a private animal training centre not open to the general public. The only times HZG’s premises are viewed by large groups of people are within the context of private educational visits by schools and colleges. However, in September, HZG makes an exception and opens its gates to the general public for only three days. These events allow visitors access to areas only usually available to HZG’s clients in the media industry.

Local ex-Job centre worker Pauline (Steve Pemberton) makes her way up Station Road, Hadfield in Derbyshire SK13. The shop standing in as H. Briss and Son is a real butcher shop in the town of Hadfield. For several years after the television series, the real butcher shop offered a hamper of 'special stuff' as a tie-in gag for fans of the TV series.

Site visitor and ‘now’ shot contributor Aston Martin adds not only this new location shot but also mentions that this butchers has now closed down. he was informed by a local that this was because the butcher was having trouble accessing the refrigeration area to the rear of the shop because of people blocking access by backing for the nearby supermarket chain.... Which has taken over the characters watering hole!

Pauline runs into Mickey (Mark Gatiss) on Station Road in Hadfield, who has a special type of kite.

Aston Martin mentions that this is outside the old Royal Oak pub on Station Road (which doubled as the Windermere Guest House in the show), looking down towards the Londis store, (which doubled as the Midland Bank, with the foodbank cash point being just behind Mickey).

Town cabbie Barbra Dixon drives down Royston Vasey main street (she actually turned from Railway Street onto Station Road in Hadfield, Derbyshire).

Shot taker Aston Martin mentions the original shot was taken on a platform camera (a shop local owner very kindly showed him pictures taken by himself during filming).

Meanwhile Pauline glares at the fallen statue's hand that has been struck by lightning on Hadfield's Station Road.

Shot taker Aston Martin mentions this is just to the left of the Palatine pub. The hand was a statue reproduction hand made for the scene.

Reverend Bernice (Reece Shearsmith) leads confession at Holy Trinity Church, Castlemacadam, Avoca in County Wicklow, Ireland. It seems that all of the headstones in the foreground were put there for the film.

Following an unexpected door transition, Herr Lipp (Steve Pemberton) and Hilary Briss (Mark Gatiss) are perplexed as they wander around an unfamiliar, yet familiar looking environment. This is of course Hadfield in Derbyshire. The pair are walking down Railway Street and Station Road is in the background.

Aston Martin provides this shot and notes that not much has changed since this picture was taken.

When ‘now’ shot taker Aston Martin visited Hadfield, he noticed that the bus shelter has since moved away from the road further towards the stone pillar of the town hall. In the film the bus stop hid the green bench. The picture was taken from the side of the relocated bus shelter. The red house on the left clearly provides a handy reference comparison between the ‘then’ and ‘now’ images.

Having given Herr and Hilary the slip, Geoff arrives back at his flat. Or so he thinks. Reece Shearsmith as Geoff is at Winster Mews, Glossop in Derbyshire.

Again site visitor Aston Martin provides the new location image and also adds that the flats basically remain the same except the slabbed entrance steps have all been tarmaced over and most porch entrance ways and doors look different. He tried to match the exact door as you can see a porch lamp behind Geff and spotted old drill holes on the wall where this possibly could have been.

Hilary Briss doesn't understand what has happened to his butcher shop on Station Road, Hadfield SK13.

Aston Martin provides this other shot of the butchers shop, further noting that you can clearly see the faded name still above the door.

Geoff catches up with the other two and joins the confusion on Station Road in Hadfield. The junction with Kiln Lane is the road coming from the left. Site visitor Aston Martin notes that the phone box was a fake, just put there for filming.

Aston Martin captured this view from outside the now closed butchers looking down towards the now closed pub which has since become a supermarket.

Now in the real world of London, Herr Lipp is bringing supplies as he walks up past 58 Oxford St, Fitzrovia, London W1D.

Neil Kenny took time out from a film convention to snap this updated location image. His patient waiting for the swarming pedestrians to clear was finally rewarded!

And then heads to the famous little hut in the middle of Soho Square Gardens, London W1. Also seen in 'Emil and the Detectives', 'Burning an Illusion', '84 Charing Cross Road', 'Last Night in Soho' and 'The Sexplorer'.

A cute nod to The Shining as 'The Overlooked Hotel' becomes the place where Hilary and Co. take their new prisoner, the actor Steve Pemberton. In real life, the hotel is currently (as of November 2017) the 'Lords Hotel' and is situated on the corner of Garway Road and Leinster Square in London W2.

And Tris provides the proof of the hotel's real name.

Despite cars, SUV’s and vans parked on both sides of the road, site visitor Pat Cleary had just about had an angle to squeeze in a decent ‘now’ shot.

Instead of deleting the script on the computer, Geoff starts to read . The scene fades into a funeral in 1690. This was filmed at the Powescourt Estate located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland. Originally the family seat of the Viscounts Powerscourt (a title that has been created three times in the Peerage of Ireland), the estate has been owned by the Slazenger family, founders and former owners of the Slazenger sporting goods business, since 1961.

Sir Nicholas Sheet-Lightning (Gatiss) leads his fellow conspirators to the home of Dr Erasmus Pea (David Warner) to seek help in killing the king. This is Drimnagh Castle, Dublin, the only remaining castle in Ireland with a flooded moat around it. (SR)

The plot to kill King William III (Bernard Hill) using a demon is put into action in the grounds of the Powerscourt Estate, located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland. The location also appears in 'The List of Adrian Messenger'.

Steve Pemberton telephones Reese Shearsmith from a phone box to inform him that the League of Gentlemen characters are alive.

Site visitor Alan Bourke finally solves this location for Reel Streets! This is Coastguard Terrace, Bray, Co. Wicklow in Ireland. Fans of the Pierce Brosnan film Taffin will know that this area is only 30mins or so along the coast from most of that films locations.

The eagle eyed location spotting talents of Alan Bourke solved this location partly because he noticed that the vertical warning stripes on the rail bridge meant it was likely in Ireland (in the UK those stripes would be slanted). Again this is Coastguard Terrace, Bray, Co Wicklow in Ireland. Obviously the lack of a phone box suggests it was a prop for the filming.

Thanks to Dr Erasmus Pea (David Warner) the characters are left to fight the homunculus in the Holy Trinity Churchyard in Castlemacadam, Avoca, County Wicklow in Ireland.

After an unfortunate firearm incident, Geoff has a realization of free will outside of the Holy Trinity Churchyard.

Site visitor Pat Cleary made a trip to Castlemacadam in County Wicklow, Ireland and made an interesting discovery. He noticed that the black door in the film must have been a set, as his shot shows no such entrance exists. And all the items on the ground must have been props provided by production. Fellow site visitor Alan Bourke found a clip on RTE News from 2004 which definitely suggests the scaffolding was also part of the filming set-up and not, as we had earlier pondered, just coincidentally there whilst they were filming.

Geoff seems the most content he's ever been outside the Holy Trinity Churchyard.

The fourth writer is still clinging on and continues his dream about having characters with tails... Site visitor Alan Bourke has solved this one by correctly identifying it as being the outside of Dublin City University (DCU), School of Nursing & Human Sciences building, Collins Avenue, Whitehall, Dublin 9, Ireland.
