After an unsuccessful attempt to get the edge on a story, reporter Mike Billings leaves the offices of Hartnell & Staples.

The offices are at Garden Court, Middle Temple, EC4. SJ

Mike makes his way from Mr Hartnell's solicitors practice.

Heading south from Garden Court. SJ

The camera follows the Sunday Star journalist who is on the trail of the murders of army officers.

Nice bin. SJ

Out of the shadows steps Inspector Corcoran (Liam Redmond).

Same structure but now enclosed. SJ

The Inspector, unimpressed with Mike's newspaper, exchanges words before leaving the journalist to continue his pursuit of unsolved murders.

And it became Blackstone House, 3 Garden Court and is home to Blackstone Chambers.

After a connection is found between the murders of the officers and Hartnell, Mike talks with the Inspector after a visit to the solicitor.

Middle Temple Hall. beyond the top of the stairs. SJ

Inspector Corcoran follows up the suspicions and pays a call to Australia House. Looking along London's Aldwych. The location is also seen in 'No Place for Jennifer', ' The Common Touch', 'The List of Adrian Messenger', 'The Trygon Factor', 'Nobody Runs Forever' and 'Touch and Go'.

Peter took this shot noting that "The phone box to the right of the entrance to Australia House has now gone".

Once inside, the Inspector learns information that leads him to focus on Tom Martin.

The same location now with a picture provided by Peter.

Inspector Corcoran heads for Tom Martin's tobacconists shop. The car has come from Sandy End Lane in London SW6 with a gas holder of the Imperial Gas Works in the background

The same location now. (PW)

Moving on from the above capture, this is the junction of Waterford Road and Harwood Terrace in SW6 with The Rose public house behind the car.

The Rose is still in business. (PW)

The Inspector goes inside to find Tom Martin.

Waterford Road now, with a row of bricks instead of a row of shops. (PW)

Once inside, Corcoran finds a seemingly helpful Martin who advises that his brother, George, is now dead before being lead to a man named Vickery.

A closer view of the wall! (PW)

In London's West End, Alfred Vickery passes the front door of the City of London public house. The pub was demolished in the 1960's and stood at the corner of Peter Street and Berwick Street in W1.

From ground level, this is what replaced the pub. Captured by Phil Wilkinson with help from Richard Lovejoy.

Vickery heads north along Berwick Street. The same street was used in 'The Small World of Sammy Lee', ‘The Playbirds’, ‘Turn the Key Softly’, ‘The Young Americans', 'The Look of Love' and 'Make Mine a Million'.

The ever changing face of Soho gets altered again. (PW)

Berwick Street, London W1 looking north from Peter Street identified with the invaluable help of Richard Lovejoy. The pub to the extreme left is the City of London and the shop on the far right is named 'Rachelle'. Virtually every building has been demolished.

Taking advantage of empty streets, this is the same location. (PW)

The sought man passes behind a market stall as he makes his way along the busy street. Maidenhead Passage is seen, once off Berwick Street, now replaced with modern buildings.

Somewhere around here. (PW)

Alfred Vickery (Sam Kydd) stops to talk with a trader. Berwick Street.

Renewal has continued since the previous comparisons of the street were taken. (PW)

The cocky Vickery chats to another stallholder. Berwick Street in London's Soho.

Friends chat over a drink these days. (RL)

The wide boy comes to a halt when he nears a policeman, then makes his way back along the street. Berwick Street W1. And the Super Fried Fish Bar on the right is still a 'chippy'!

In fact a "Dining Plaice". (RL)

Inspector Corcoran arrives in the street. The corner of Berwick Street and Broadwick Street in Soho.

No "coppers" there today. (RL)

Corcoran is made aware of Vickery's movements.

In front of The Blue Posts public house on Berwick Street, London W1. (PW)

Inspector Corcoran follows Vickery as he walks south along Berwick Street. The open space where the vehicles are parked appears to have been where St Luke's Church stood until the mid 1930s.

Roughly here. (PW)

Vickery disappears into an alleyway where the Inspector catches up and questions him. The passage seems to be roughly where the entrance to Kemp House now stands.

And this is exactly where the entrance to Kemp House remains. (PW)

After musing over his brother's death certificate the night before, Martin awakens and checks through the window above the shop. Looking along Michael Road from Waterford Street back in SW6. The Imperial pub to the right has long gone and can be seen on the left of Capture 9 to put some perspective on the road junction.

Yes, the same view now. The green building to the extreme left is also seen in 'Girl with a Pistol' (Image gwp038). (PW)

Mike waits outside Hartnell's practice whilst Corcoran and Vickery pay a visit and find that the partner Staples is unavailable.

Garden Court, EC4.

The journalist paces up and down while he waits to bump into Corcoran.

He's looking into Middle Temple Gardens. SJ

Mike hides as the Inspector and Vickery appear from the building.

Same corner seen in Capture 2. SJ

The Inspector learns that Vickery recognises Hartnell from the army.

Garden Court. SJ

After the contrived meeting, Mike and Corcoran head off for lunch together to exchange information.

The bin's still there. SJ

The journalist walks Hartnell's secretary, Laura Robens (Jean Lodge), back to the office. Inside they find the clerk, Barrett, who hits Mike over the head before making his escape.

Now.. SJ

A taxi drops Mike off at home where he finds Vickery waiting with information.

Jules Ballantyne has tracked this long outstanding one down to Chesil Court on the corner of Chelsea Manor St. and Cheyne Gardens, London SW3 and supports with this Google Earth shot. (RL)

Vickery breaks into the tobacconists where he finds and recognises George Martin. Another view of Waterford Road, this time a lightened night shot looking towards Harwood Terrace.

A similar shot now. The buildings nearest the camera are all that's left on this side of the road. (PW)

After murdering Vickery, Martin checks through a window above his shop and sees a policeman. This is Waterford Road as seen from the shop.

The boarding behind the policeman in the screen capture hid either an open space or what became this building. The low wall and the upright wall on the extreme left still stand.

  • 'Now' required

Whilst Martin poses as a policeman and calls Hartnell to arrange a meeting, Inspector Corcoran and Mike Billings head to Chelsea. Cremorne Road with what could be Seaton Street or Dartrey Road in the left background.

A body has been found in the river. The Thames off Cremorne Road in SW10 with Battersea Bridge in the background. The area was also used in 'The Naked Truth', 'The Deadly Affair' and 'Otley'.

The proof captured by Peter.

The victim is identified as Vickery. The Thames in London SW10.

The same location now from Peter.

  • 'Now' required

Mike and the Inspector head to Hartnell's office to see Staples.

As they drive, Mike realises that the man they want to question won't be in the office. Somerset House in WC2 seen from Waterloo Bridge spotted by John Tunstill.

More cars and changing fashion featuure in this now picture provided by Peter.

The car swings round as the two head for Staples' home in Golders Green. Dave W resolves another long standing mystery, Royal Hospital Road, London SW3 with Flood Street. (RL)

Currently prevented from actually walking 'Memory Lane' Dave provides this Google Earth View of the location with 'Cheyne Court' to the left kindling his memories. (RL)

The turn is completed as Martin makes his way to see Hartnell at the office. And this, Dave tells us, is Royal Hospital Road, London SW3 with Cheyne Walk. (RL)

Once again Dave supports his identificatrion with a Google Earth View. (RL)

Martin appears on the pathway outside the practice where Hartnell and his Secretary are still at work.

Middle Temple Garden, EC4. SJ

The camera follows Martin as he enters the office where he reveals himself to be George Henry Martin, the man that Hartnell court martialed.

Looking north. SJ

Corcoran and Mike finally arrive, after Martin's attempt on Hartnell's life was foiled.

Another bin: tidy, these legal eagles.

The two run inside where Mike gets his story and the Inspector arrests Martin.

2 Garden Court. SJ
