Naked as Nature Intended

After almost two minutes of looking at this scene, a naked young woman walks towards the camera to give a taste of what's, not exactly, to come.

Lionel and Cynthia took a trip down Memory Lane, more specifically Bedruthan Steps on the north coast of Cornwall just east of Mawgan Porth. Apparently the beach is submerged during some of each tide and the picture shows the east end of the beach which is only accessible at very low tide. Once again, totally selfless, Lionel put RS first and got his feet very wet to obtain this shot for us. We really appreciate the risks and discomfort that you sustain for us, thank you. (RL)

A Buick Invicta Sedan comes into view as a narration begins, explaining that secretary Petrina and her friend Jackie enjoy a holiday with a real change.

Pamela (Pamela Green), a dancer, comes out of rehearsals at the theatre to be picked up by Petrina. Robin Brigham identifies this as Golders Green Hippodrome on North End Road in London NW11.

The two girls make their way to collect Jackie, a shoe shop assistant. This is Varley Parade at the corner of The Hyde on Edgware Road and Woodfield Avenue in Colindale NW9 located by Robin Brigham.

At the Hillfield Garage, pump attendants Bridget (Bridget Leonard) and Angela (Angela Jones) attend to a customer as the Buick passes. The garage stood at the corner of The Hyde and Woodfield Road in Colindale.

Accompanied by nondescript background music, the narration continues to tell us that Bridget and Angela are nudists. The corner of The Hyde and Woodfield Avenue in NW9 with Varley Parade in the left background, discovered by Robin Brigham.

Jackie’s Mother waves as the rented car is brought to to a stand.

With Jackie on board, Petrina drives the girls away to their naturist holiday in exotic Cornwall.

The travelogue style music wells up as the Buick negotiates country roads.

The young women stop off at Stonehenge on the way. The ancient monument is near Amesbury in Wiltshire.

Rebecca Andrews recaptures the scene explaining that access is now different and the road in the screen capture no longer exists.

The music turns serious as Jackie (Jackie Salt), Petrina (Petrina Forsyth) and Pamela are 'deeply fascinated' whilst wandering between the stones. The prehistoric site also appears in ‘The Small Back Room’, ‘Night of the Demon’ and ‘The Tomb of Ligeia’.

After posing on the stones at Stonehenge, the girls continue on their way to the film's Trewyn sun club. Tapeley Park and Gardens at Instow in Devon identified by Keith Prested who adds that the archway marks the entrance to the Italian Garden Terraces.

Whilst on holiday in the area, Keith took the opportunity to visit the location where there was no Buick and definitely no nudity!

After the car is parked, the girls book into the hotel before changing into their bikinis.

Outside a pub, Bridget and Angela pause during their hike towards the West Country. This is the base of the since replaced sign at the Travellers Rest public house at Trevarrian Hill to the north of Newquay in Cornwall.

Back at the hotel, Petrina, Pamela and Jackie run towards the outdoor pool.

The narrator brings our attention to the famous Lorna Doone coach which once stood opposite The Hoops Inn, Horns Cross near Bideford, Devon.

Lionel and Cynthia provide this shot of where the 'Lorna Doone Coach' stood opposite the Hoops Inn across the A39 road. The coach still exists and can apparently be hired for corporate events whereby up to twelve people can enjoy trips down country lanes to local pubs. (RL)

The visit to this location seems gratuitous as the girls never appear here! As the sign states, this is The Hoops Inn at Horns Cross.

The music jollies up as Bridget and Angela reach the picturesque fishing village of Clovelly just before the Buick.

Having passed through the visitor centre Lionel and Cynthia Sear encounter this viewpoint before commencing their descent into the village. Just below the wall is Mount Pleasant which is a National Trust enclave in the Clovelly Estate. (RL)

The voice over advises that the steep main road was once a water course. The main street in Clovelly, Devon with the Bristol Channel in the distance.

This is near the top of the main street looking down. Lionel and Cynthia didn’t bother to blur the dog’s face and they couldn’t stand in the exact spot as there were donkeys in the way!

Part of the way down there is a viewpoint which gives a good view of the harbour below and Lionel and Cynthia took the advantage. (RL)

Lionel and Cynthia were drawn to the Red Lion Hotel down in the harbour and as Lionel takes the shot we understand that Cynthia had her back to him as she "patiently" awaited her lunch. (RL)

Moving south, we are treated to a serene panorama. Looking across from above Porth Curno to Logan Rock and Castle Peak with Pednvounder beach to the left. The area is seen in ‘Carnival’, ‘The Young Lovers’ and ‘Night of the Eagle’.

This shot from Lionel and Cynthia reveals that the old concrete block structure has gone and a new box office/cafe/visitor centre has been built. The Minack is clearly constantly evolving. (RL)

From ‘up in the gods’ Lionel and Cynthia look down on the stage that was set up for ‘The Railway Children’. Rehearsals were going on during their visit that meant that they could not get in the right position for Captures 34 and 35 as the stage was roped off. (RL)

Travelling on, the Buick carries Petrina, Pamela and Jackie onward into King Arthur country.

Bridget and Angela arrive in Tintagel. This is Atlantic Road in Tintagel, Cornwall.

Some years later Lionel and Cynthia arrive in Tintagel and find that it is now a pasty shop. (RL)

The pair decide to visit the famous castle. The start of Castle Road, Tintagel.

On the left of the pasty shop in Capture 38 is the road down to the castle. This is fairly steep so the Land Rover service offers an easy way for the less agile. I would imagine Lionel and Cynthia would see it as exercise. (RL)

The narrator tells us that Tintagel is connected with romance . . . . unlike this film.

Looking down on the cove Lionel and Cynthia advise that this acted as a harbour in the Dark Ages bringing in Mediterranean trade. (RL)

From Merlin's Cave, Bridget and Angel climb the stairs towards the castle entrance.

The castle remains are on an island reached by a bridge from which steep steps take you up to the entrance gate. Lionel and Cynthia found that a few battlements have been lost in the intervening period. (RL)

We learn as we watch . . . and are told that the castle is built on the site of an ancient monastery.

These days, Wikipedia tells us that the castle is a medieval fortification on the peninsula of Tintagel Island.

More history is taught as we see far more views of the castle than we ought to.

This is more like it . . . the girls are now driving towards the beach and the nudist camp. The B3276 towards Trenance from Newquay, Cornwall.

Where the B3276 bends sharply to the right into Mawgan Porth we see the Merrymoor Inn. Not quite the right spot but this is a very busy road and Lionel and Cynthia draw the line at risking both life and limb for us. (RL)

Lionel and Cynthia found that the ‘First and Last House’ has gained a room at the back but some of the rocks look the same. (RL)

A final glamour shot is taken before we head to the beach for volleyball, naked bathing and general prancing about. Outside The Land's End Hotel on Land’s End Road, St. Buryan in Cornwall.

After some titillating shots taken on the beach and at the studio the five girls all meet up before heading into Trewyn sun club. However, this is Spielplatz Naturist Resort on Lye Lane, Bricket Wood in Hertfordshire. Ashley Booth advises that the resort can also be seen in 1959's 'Nature's Paradise' which is played at the start of 'Carry On Camping'.

Ashley provides this view of the clubhouse showing that the building and decking have since been extended.

Petrina enjoys a shower by the pool. Spielplatz Naturist Resort in Hertfordshire is the longest-operating naturist resort in United Kingdom.
