Storyline:

Now close to death, Queen Mary I (Kathy Burke) steps up her policy of Protestant repression. Even Princess Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett), her younger sister and her heir apparent is in grave danger, but Mary’s last ditch to execute her for treason fails. Within days, Mary is dead and Elizabeth is crowned Queen of England, but with enemies and rebellion continuing in her own council she is advised to hit back. She retaliated in a counter-coup of immense ferocity, wiping out all opposition to her leadership. Her throne is finally secure.

Some say Elizabeth gets arrested at Alnwick Castle, but thanks go to Simon Richardson, who points out that the building is in fact Alnwick Abbey Gatehouse (which is all that remains of Alnwick Abbey) and is found just half a mile away from Alnwick Castle on the B6346.

Peter Giles provides a now show, amazing how the size perspective is altered without those riders close to camera. (RL)

According to the film they ride towards a castle in Scotland, but it is actually a digital composite with again using Alnwick Castle, Alnwick, Northumberland.

This ‘now’ shot showing the outside grounds of Alnwick Castle shows that the shot in the movie was a digital composite, as the real grounds are very different.
