Deadfall

As part of a plan to rob millionaire Salinas, cat burglar Henry Stuart Clarke checks into a rest home for alcoholics where he is approached by Fé Moreau. Castillo De Bendinat, Mallorca identified on www.silver-screen-spain.com

After researching Fé and her husband Richard in El Escorial, Henry Stuart Clarke (Michael Caine) makes his way back to his car. Calle Grimaldi, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, identified by Steve Randall

As Henry gets into his car, he notices a Girl watching him. Manuel Gurtner explains that this was filmed on the Plaza San Lorenzo, right above the Plaza Jacinto Benavente adding that Nanette Newman, playing the Girl, was then married to director Bryan Forbes.

The cat burglar drives away. Manuel Gurtner tells us that the 1962 Renault Floride S Cabriolet turns into Calle Reina Victoria, with the Casa de las Columnas on the left. By the end of the street, now a pedestrian zone, follows the Plaza de la Constitución, where the town hall can be seen partially behind the greenery.

Henry travels to Madrid where he agrees to join forces with the Moreaus to commit the burglary. But in fact, says Manuel Gurtner, he is driving in opposite direction towards the municipality of El Escorial. Inaugurated in 1595, the Iglesia de San Bernabé can be recognised behind the greenery, together with the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range in the distance.

Fé and Richard arrive outside the house of an unnamed wealthy couple. Here we are in Palma de Mallorca, standing in for Madrid.

Having researched the location back in 2015 Lionel and Cynthia Sear returned to take this shot. Carrer Lluis Vives, the buttresses are in fact supporting the wall to "Casa de Anchianos de las Hermanitas de los Pobres". Looking south along the Carrer de Jesus, they acknowledge it is not the perfect angle but had they not stepped onto the path there would have been nothing but tree growth. (RL)

The pair take photos of the property for Henry's trial job before attempting to rob Salinas' house. Lionel and Cynthia advise that this shot looks to be the Carrer de Jesus in Palma de Mallorca but looking west. (RL)

Lionel and Cynthia took this shot looking west across the Carrer de Jesus from roughly the same spot as used for the previous capture confirming their earlier thoughts. This is now a very busy road they say but clearly they managed to catch a convenient break in the traffic. (RL)

On another evening, Fé and Henry watch as a Security Guard posts a cheque for concert tickets. Palma de Mallorca again.

On the evening of the concert, the victim and his wife leave the house. Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca.

Fé waits to drive Henry and Richard to their target. The 1962 Citroën DS 19 stands in the doorway of the corner building which Manuel Gurtner identifies as Plaza de Oriente, 2, in Madrid and adds "Actually there is little chance to identify this location unless you live there, because the building has been renovated over the years and hosts now a restaurant."

The victims leave their estate. The entrance to the Marivent Palace on Avinguda Joan Miró in Palma, Mallorca.

Lionel and Cynthia Sear found that the Palace is some three miles along the coast from Palma and is now the summer residence of the Spanish Royal Family. No public access but even they were not allowed in. (RL)

After leaving the Moreau estate, the car turns onto Calle de Lepanto. Manuel Gurtner points out the statues of Ramiro I and Alonso II as they come into view at the edge of the Jardines de Lepanto.

Concert goers arrive for the performance. Manuel Gurtner advises that here we see the west entrance of the Teatro Real, located in the Plaza de Oriente in Madrid. Opened in 1850, the opera house was closed in 1925 due to dilapidation. After decades of slumber, the Teatro Real was reopened the year before filming took place, but initially as a pure concert hall without stage technology.

Henry scales the house as the robbery commences. Marivent Palace, Palma.

In the courtyard below, Richard Moreau (Eric Portman) waits for Henry to break in and open a side door.

When the safe can't be opened, Henry removes it from the wall and the pair take it with them.

With the concert and the heist both over, the victims make their way home. Again, located by Manuel Gurtner, this is the west entrance of the Teatro Real, as the now visible large balcony proves. The 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 drives across the Plaza de Oriente towards Calle de Lepanto.

The white German Limousine carries the now not so wealthy couple on the long journey home past the, then, Cine Avenida at Gran Vía, 37, where the war movie "Lost Command" is running. The landmark neon signs in the right background belong to the tower of the Art Deco style Hotel Capitol, built from 1931 to 1933.

Fé meets up with Richard who tells her that he's opened the safe. Casa de Campo, Paseo Puerta del Ángel, Madrid 28011.

The younger Wife kisses her Husband and goes to tell Henry the news that the robbery netted $500,000. Casa de Campo, Madrid.

Henry takes Fé for a drive out of the city in the present that she has bought for him. The Jardines de Alfabia, near Bunyola, Mallorca.

After spending time together, the pair drive to Richard's villa. As the 1966 Jaguar E-Type runs towards Bunyola, located in the Sierra de Tramontana region, the notable peak called Puig de Son Poc comes into view. Information from Manuel Gurtner.

Henry returns to Richard Moreau's villa. The villa stood next to the Passeig de Ses Àmfores, Capdepera, Mallorca, and is also seen in "Woman of Straw." (Steve Randall).

After looking for Fé, Henry finds Richard, and the truth is disclosed about the past and his relationship with his Wife.

At Salinas' mansion, Henry attempts the burglary on his own. Manuel Gurtner tells us that the long staircase leads up to Villa March, located on a hilltop east of Cala Ratjada, a hamlet of Capdepera in the Llevant region of Majorca in the Balearic Islands.

Henry falls after being shot by a guard whilst, back at the villa, Richard commits suicide. Manuel Gurtner explains that the well-known estate, also called Casa March, is originally based on the property around the 16th-century Sa Torre Cega (Blind Tower), which was purchased by controversial entrepreneur Juan March in 1911 and significantly expanded over the decades, most recently in the 1970s.

Lionel and Cynthia know how to enjoy their holidays, this time a visit to the Municipal Cemetery which fronts on to the Carrer de Jesus and with a little bit of luck found this,the side entrance. (RL)
