Asphyx, The

It's the present day, well 1973, and sirens are heard as a police car speeds into shot. Grant Road, London SW11.

The car is coming from Plough Road onto Grant Road. A ground view shot until one can access Sporle Court for the real match. SJ

As the car passes the Essex Arms public house on Grant Road, the camera pans right and zooms out bringing a railway line and sidings into view.

The Essex Arms was at 69 Plough Road before becoming the Pine Tavern and then being demolished for housing. SJ

The shot follows the police car that is responding a report of a road traffic accident. This is an aerial shot over the Winstanley Estate in Wandsworth including the railway and sidings just west of Clapham Junction station in SW11. The estate also appears in ‘Up the Junction’, ‘Sitting Target’, 'The Offence' and ‘Poor Cow’.

One of the Police Officers (Joe Wadham) walks around the vehicles and finds another person beneath the wreckage. Panning from the previous capture brings another background building into view. Winstanley Road again.

The Policeman is shocked to find that the person lying between two cars is still alive. Cue music and titles as, for the moment, we leave Winstanley Road in London SW11. SJ advises that this is Sporle Court and a lot more of this huge structure was seen in 'Sitting Target'.

Back at the turn of the 20th century, Sir Hugo Cunningham and his fiancé, Anna Wheatley, pass through the gates of the family mansion.

The carriage approaches the house. Foxhills on Stonehill Road, Ottershaw near Chertsey, Surrey, which also features in 'The Oblong Box'.

On a cold March day, Sir Hugo Cunningham photographs his adopted son Giles (Robert Powell) and his daughter Christina (Jane Lapotaire) as they punt across the river. This is the River Ash flowing to the south of Shepperton Studios in Littleton, Surrey.

Giles and Christina join Sir Hugo as he prepares to film his son Clive and fiancé, Anna. The since demolished balustrade and pavilion stood alongside the River Ash in Littleton Park, Surrey and also features in 'The Trygon Factor', 'Witchcraft', 'The Oblong Box' and 'A French Mistress' as well as 'Follow Me' and 'Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?'.

All that remains is the ruin of the balustrade, here captured by Andy Waller who found no sign of the folly.

Returning to 1973, before events leading up to the car crash, a greatly aged Sir Hugo wanders the streets. Camley Court, SW11 identified by SJ.

Long after he succeeds in making himself immortal, the tired old man decides to end his life by walking into the road in front of two cars heading for a collision. Winstanley Road in London SW11.
