Aah glorious rocks and things. Must be America. Arches National Park, Utah

A troop of boy scouts including the young Indiana, River Phoenix.

A partial match from Calvin Brady, taken back in '02. Different time of day but still the same perfect blue sky. (SJ)

The well-named Balancing Rock.

Taken on a USA trip back in the 90s. SJ

Still in Arches National Park as Phoenix makes a run for it.

Phoenix makes a beeline for the train. Suddenly in another state..."Indeed, because the train of the then Pueblo & Chama Railroad with the Dunn & Duffy Combined Circus crosses the sagebrush plains near Antonito, Colorado. But in fact, we see a masked freight train of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad with the Mikado type loco N° 484 of K-36 Class 2-8-2, filmed on the former San Juan Extension between Antonito and Chama, New Mexico." Manuel Gurtner's expertise with trains comes to the fore.

Phoenix runs home. Said to be filmed just outside Arches so perhaps Moab or Green River, Utah... "Neither, because he runs from the level crossing 5th Avenue East towards Front Street at Antonito, Conejos County, Colorado. Behind Phoenix in the background the 1890 built Palace Hotel on Main Street can be recognized." Manuel G discovery.

The comparison shot from the same angle towards the level crossing over the standard gauge tracks of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. MG/G (SJ)

Phoenix's home. Still standing? ... "Of course, because it’s still in Antonito, but the reverse shot from the same point of view on Front Street." Manuel again.

Nowadays, the former filming location at the corner of Front Street and 5th Avenue East houses a Bed & Breakfast. MG/G

Now we're up to adult Indiana time, and in England. Hertfordshire.

Ford makes an escape through a window of the Royal Masonic School, Rickmansworth.

Calvin's daughter helped him find Indy's window. SJ

Connery's house, possibly in the Mill Hill area of London... James Morgan has narrowed it down to Wills Grove in NW7 and H adds that it is called Park Lodge. (SJ)

With impressive diligence, James M. returned to the location to improve his own angle, posted in June '22, with this update. (SJ)

Ford and Elliott arrive in Venice... "Coming from the railway terminus Venezia Santa Lucia they disembark the vaporetto at the Fondamenta Salute along the northern facade of the Punta della Dogana by the end of the Canal Grande. On the opposite side, the well-known Hotel Bauer and the Ca' Giustinian can be seen, with the greenery of the Giardini Reali and the mighty Campanile di San Marco in the background." Proper details from Manuel.

From the same angle near the Campo della Salute. MG/G (SJ)

Elliott and Ford meet Doody at the Grand Canal..."They are by the corner of Campo della Salute, the square around the iconic church Santa Maria della Salute, one of the city's landmarks. At the opposite side of the Canal Grande, behind Elliott as the “multilingual” Marcus Brody, the Ca' Corner with the prefecture of Venice and to the left of a very pleased Indy the Palazzo Gritti Pisani can be recognized. Between Ford and Alison as the beautiful but fatal blonde Elsa the Palazzo Ferro Fini is glimpsed." MG

A Google comparison from the same point of view shows partly the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and in the background the Palazzo Genovese, now a luxury hotel. MG/G (SJ)

A Venetian canal ... Horribly vague but fortunately, Manuel offers, "Indeed, but more precisely we see the Rio San Barnaba, while the trio walk along the Fondamenta del Squero towards the Ponte dei Pugni. In the very background the bell towers of the Chiesa di San Raffaele Arcangelo can be recognized."

Replacing a Google shot, this original is from Calvin Brady, taken in October 2017. (SJ)

Closer shot of Doody and Ford ... and Elliott behind Alison, after crossing the Ponte dei Pugni and going along the Fondamenta Gherardini on the way to the “Biblioteca di San Barnaba”. MG

Nick Knight on the case, taken on 17/1/20. (SJ)

The trio arrive at the Chiesa di San Barnaba, Campo San Barnaba, Dorsoduro distict of Venice, standing in as a library.

Now. SJ

In the Campo San Barnaba, also seen in Summertime/Summer Madness where Kate Hepburn falls into the canal ... "with the Ponte San Barnaba in the background. At that time, the water was so dirty that Hepburn, despite or because of a used disinfectant, got an eye infection and suffered from it all her life." MG

This is a reverse pov from the then. Taken for a reason. I can't see the manhole cover. SJ

Leaving the church/library.

Running and building up to a speedboat chase, much of which was filmed at Tlibury, Essex but this still looks like Venice.

  • 'Now' required

Jumping on board... Manuel adds, "Obviously a set decoration with a sprinkle of Venetian features somewhere in the Tilbury Docks, which also feature in 'Grasshopper Island' and 'The Captain's Table'. By the way, there is no Calle di Santa Lucia in Venice as the street sign would have one believe."

On the water...Manuel writes, "And a huge challenge when it comes to Venice. Coming from open water the motoscafo of famous Riva type with Indy, Elsa and Kazim on board speeds through the Canale dei Lavraneri at Giudecca Island and heading to the Giudecca canal, after passing under the then Ponte dei Lavraneri. Indeed very interesting ..."

... because the Google comparison shot reveals that this take was obviously mounted in reverse by editor Michael Kahn, unnoticed by George Lucas. The newly built Ponte dei Lavraneri was inaugurated in 2004. However, in reality the building by the pedestrian bridge and the block of flats behind it are located to starboard, not to port (larboard) as suggested in the movie. MG/G (SJ)

Definitely Venice... "More specifically the motoscafo moors at the private jetty of the Palazzo Barbaro, located by the corner with the Rio de l’Orso." Manuel.

Schloss Burresheim, in the Nette Vally near Mayen, Germany, plays the Brunwald Castle.

The Castel Brunwald dock escape scene, which James Morgan explains was filmed at the old Tank 2 at Elstree Studios.

And James M. also provides the comparison, pointing out the similar treeline, taken at the Tesco's Supermarket which replaced the studios. This is a shot, later in a changed season, to replace his own (as in cap10) in March '25 which didn't show enough foliage. (SJ)

Elliott and Rhys-Davies at Avenue Estación, Guadix, Spain: the mosque in the background is not there, and Manuel adds, "and, like the palm tree, belongs to a backdrop construction, which was also set up on the grounds of the freight yard behind the wall, to cover up the goods sheds. Far left the "fake" facade partly can be recognised, which is placed by the Germans to catch Marcus Brody."

Henning Lübbe provides this to replace Manuel's GEV from 2019. Far on the left side the buildings located alongside the Avenida de la Estación. (SJ)

Guadix is standing in for Iskenderun ... "The railway station also appears in “A Bullet for the General”, while many other spaghetti westerns were shot on the broad gauged Linares-Almeria main line in the 1960s and 1970s." Manuel

Facing towards the characteristic station building, located far out of the town centre of Guadix known for its cave dwellings and as a location for "A Fistful of Dynamite"... Henning admits a slight off-angle but this, again, replaces and improves a GEV shot. (SJ)

Off the truck goes with Elliott kidnapped heading north from Guadix station alongside the railway line... "The former locomotive depot housed for a long time the RENFE engine N° 140-2054 of Consolidation type 2-8-0, which briefly appears later by the arrival of Indy and his father in Iskenderun." Manuel

I first thought (for some misguided reason) Mt. Tamalpais State Park, west of Mill Valley, north of San Francisco, Marin County, California, USA, but Miguel González has found Sierra de Huétor Natural Park, Granada, Andalusia, Spain, which would appear more logical given other Spanish scenes... But an update in 2023: Jeffrey Root has come to my rescue, specifically the location being on the Concrete Pipe Road and Taylor Trail Loop. (SJ)

Now in southern Spain, east of Almeria: looking down on the Playa de Mónsul.

Henning Lübbe found the beach open but deserted on his visit, to replace my 2013 shot which was the wrong angle due to the approach (ALP-822) to the beach being closed. (SJ)

This beach with a wonderfully distinctive rock is Mónsul in the Cabo de Gata Park east of Almeria, Spain.

Al Khazneh "The Treasury" in the ancient city of Petra.

Brother Robin was working from memory here so not an exact match. RJ (SJ)

Al Khazneh is also seen in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger but here is representing the entrance to the Holy Grail's location.

Chris Lee visited in March for this angle which improved the angle of RJ's 2013 shot. (SJ)
