Lots of info on line for this film of course, but http://www.strijdbewijs.nl/market-garden/movie.htm presents a detailed comparison between the film and the actual events in Market Garden. An episode of the Dutch TV program ‘Andere Tijden’ describes the impact that the making of the film had on the town of Deventer: http://www.geschiedenis24.nl/andere-tijden/afleveringen/2004-2005/Een-Brug-te-Ver.html

Arjan Doolaar also has further information about Nijmegen locations at http://shotonlocation-eng.blogspot.com/2015/07/nijmegen-netherlands.html

Can you help:

If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

Feldmarschall Von Runstedt (Wolfgang Preiss) arrives at German Western Front Army HQ. Oude Gemeentehuis, Zutphen.

Manuel Gabler provides this comparison of the old town hall at Zuphen.

This looks to be inside the entrance of the Oude Gemeentehuis, with St Walburgiskerk visible opposite.

Retreating German troops stream past the house where the (unnamed) underground leader's son (Eric Van't Wout) is observing from his window. Junction of Bergschild and Rijkmanstraat, Deventer.

Vying for position with parked cars, Paul Alterskye provides this view of the building.

The camera zooms to the window from which the boy is watching. 48 Rijkmanstraat, Deventer.

Paul Alterskye provides this shot taken from ground level.

At Lt-Gen Browning's HQ in England, Browning (Dirk Bogarde) and Major Fuller (Frank Grimes) discuss the possibility of German tanks in the drop zone. Anthony Spencer remarks that "The single storey building to the left has a distinctive dormer window which is unusual for an English mansion or stately home. Properties of that type do not, as a rule, have mature trees and extensive woodland in such close proximity to the house. However, this is often a feature with Dutch Buitenplaats and taking these points together could suggest that this location is not in England, but somewhere in the Netherlands." . . . and Arjan Doolaar found it at Landgoed De Voorst, Binnenweg 10 in Eefde.

Major General Urquhart (Sean Connery) discusses the location of the drop zone with the RAF briefing officer (Jeremy Kemp). The maps show Arnhem, but this reconnaissance photo is of Deventer. By the bridge approach, the houses constructed for filming are visible, so I like to think that the entire cast and crew are in this shot.

The same view in 2005, copyright Google Earth. Visible under the bridge approach, where the fake houses stood, is a large enclosed car park.

Troops await the arrival of Lt-General Horrocks (Edward Fox). De Brink, Deventer, substituting for Leopoldsburg.

David Jenkinson returned to Deventer.

Planes carrying the first wave of paratroopers fly over a church.

St Michael's, Bray -- also used in Siege of the Saxons and several episodes of Morse.

Inside the church, the noise of the massed planes has the congregation leaving to see what's happening.

Today, with the new organ, completed in 2013, visible on the left.

The locals watch the planes fly over . . . . Hill Street, Reading says Pete Downs and a Google scan looking south-east at the corner of Francis Street would agree. (SJ)

Andrew Price provides this comparison view.

Horrocks and others at the departure point, supposedly outside Leopoldsburg. The building behind has broken windows and a generally run-down appearance . . . does it still exist? No it doesn't . . . Harold Broedelet tells us that this was the old bicycle factory 'Burgers ENR,' located at the Rozengaarderweg in Deventer. In the 1970s the abandoned factory was set on fire several times before being demolished. A new neighbourhood was built on the site in the 80s. More information about the factory can be found by following the link in the header.

General Bittrich (Maximilian Schell) looks on as the planes pass over his headquarters. Huis Rhederoord, De Steeg, Rheden

Although many decades has passed since the original shot, it looked for Frank like time stood still at this beautiful location. The angle of the now shot is different because he still does not the ability to fly. The customary additional interesting information "Rhederoord is originated in the 17th century because Willem Everwijn made a series of purchases from 1657 onwards, between Rheden en De Steeg. The Current house and park were originally laid out in 1745 in the French Baroque style." (RL)

Feldmarschall Model's headquarters. Landgoed Het Schol, Voorst, Gelderland, impersonating the Hartenstein Hotel at Oosterbeek.

Captured by E. Schreur this is 'Huis 't Schol' as it appears today

Dutch civilians welcome Frost's troops. This is Bronkhorst, standing in for Oosterbeek. Jan ter Horst's house and the church, right of shot, were constructed for the film.

Frank took this shot at the intersection of Bakerwaardeweg and Bovenstraat, just outside the beautiful small village Bronkhorst he says. (RL)

Men of the 101st Airborne division dive for cover as the Son bridge is blown up just as they reach it. A commenter on http://www.geschiedenis24.nl/andere-tijden/afleveringen/2004-2005/Een-Brug-te-Ver.html remembers being part of a Dutch army unit that built a fake bridge at Bussloo -- is this it?

Welsum, Overijssel, with the hotel De Droomengel behind. Circa 1976

Lt-Colonel Vandeleur (Michael Caine) advances towards Eindhoven. Welsum, Overijssel, with the hotel De Droomengel behind.

Frank was honoured to stand on the same place where one his favourite movie stars, Michael Caine was once driving a tank. (RL)

Lt-Colonel Frost's troops arrive in Arnhem. Junction of Well and Duimpoort, Deventer.

the junction of Well and Duimpoort, Deventer,

Frank van de Berg found himself in Deventer and kindly found time for some outstanding shots for us, here, at the junction of Well and Duimpoort, Deventer, situated right next to the river Ijssel. (RL)

Same place, just to the left of the previous shot. Was this building derelict then, or has it been dressed up? The junction of Duimpoort and Achter de Muren Duimpoort, Deventer

the junction of Duimpoort and Achter de Muren Duimpoort, Deventer

Frank took this shot from the exact same position as of Capture 17 but a little more to the left. This one’s on the junction of Duimpoort and Achter de Muren Duimpoort, Deventer and yeah… he believes the house on the corner was dressed up. (RL)

They move cautiously through the town. Polstraat, Deventer.

The same view along the same street captured by Paul Alterskye.

Close to the bridge now. The houses opposite have been constructed in a car park by the film company.

Frank doesn't think that the houses were made for the movie over the car park, that is the street behind this one and the angle of the bridge in the other street doesn’t match with this one. This photo has been taken from the junction of Melksterstraat and Polstraat. All houses you see are new and not on the original photo. (RL)

Under the bridge approach. The houses here are all constructed for the film.

This photo is almost, but not exactly, taken from the original position in a very ugly parking garage as mentioned in capture 20. Behind Frank is a solid metal wall…. (RL)

Lt-Colonel Frost (Antony Hopkins) surveys the bridge. Wilhelminabrug, Deventer, looking southwest across the river IJssel, with the Bolwerksmolen in the background.

Frank wasn't able to take the photo on the exact same position as the cameraman did because the place where he stood "ain’t there no more". Indeed this is the Wilhelminabrug (a former Dutch queen). (RL)

View in the opposite direction; Frost is joined by Major Carlyle (Christopher Good). The Bergkerk in the background.

Almost on the same position as Capture 22 but then at the other side of the road. The Bergkerk on the left is still there. With thanks to Frank once more. (RL)

Meanwhile Urquhart and a few of his men have been cut off from the main force and are trying to reach the bridge. Captain Cleminson (Michael Graham Cox) runs for cover. The archway over the road is at J.F. Gronoviusstraat, Deventer as identified by Anthony Spencer.

The archway over the road is at J.F. Gronoviusstraat, Deventer

Ok, much got destroyed in WWII but did it take decades to renovate the whole neighbourhood? Frank asks. It looked better when the soldiers were there. (RL)

Zandweerdsweg, which runs parallel to J.F. Gronoviusstraat in Deventer. Circa 1976

Another view of the same street, as German troops search the area where Urquhart is hiding. Anthony Spencer locates this as Zandweerdsweg, which runs parallel to J.F. Gronoviusstraat in Deventer.

Frank van den Berg is really appreciative of Anthony Spencer for identifying the location as he couldn’t find this one. Thanks! (RL)

Lt-Colonel Vandeleur receives an ecstatic welcome in Eindhoven. (De Brink, Deventer again).

Captain Bestebreurtje (Peter Faber) arrives at Brigadier General Gavin's HQ, south of Nijmegen. Arjan Doolaar advises that this is Havezate Schoonheten, Schoonhetenseweg 56 in Heeten.

Staff Sergeant Dolan (James Caan) rescues Captain Glass (Nicholas Campbell), with the Palthetoren (De Sprengenberg), near Haarle, Overijssel, in the background.

Luckily for Frank there were no wounded American soldiers but only beautiful purple heather. De Sprengenberg is a house on the hill Sprengenberg near Haarle, municipality of Hellendoorn, built in the years 1898-1910 by order of A.A.W. van Wulfften Palthe (1851-1929). The house is often referred to as the Palthetower in Salland. (RL)

30 Corps reach the bridge at Grave -- and this really is the Grave bridge.

  • 'Now' required

Lt-Colonel Frost and Major Carlyle watch as German armour crosses the Arnhem bridge. Wilhelminabrug, Deventer, with the fake houses to the right of shot and the real ones in Emmastraat to the left.

The opposite direction, with a view of houses in Bokkingshang.

During his last visit to Deventer Frank van den Berg forgot to take this photo, so he was a little better organised this time. Luckily for him it was quiet.. No tanks, no bombs exploding..........nothing! (RL)

The Waalbrug, Nijmegen, still in German hands at this stage.

The Waal bridge, seen from Nijmegen taken by Arjan Doolaar.

As the German grip on Arnhem tightens, Dutch civilians, including the underground leader (Siem Vroom), build barricades. Kerksteeg, Deventer.

Now this is in one of the most beautiful parts of Deventer and is located on a small hill and Frank was happy to see that the wounded got replaced by ladders. (RL)

Allied HQ somewhere south of Nijmegen. Huis Rhederoord, De Steeg, Rheden, seen from another angle as Bittrich's HQ in abtf012.

Frank found that the military vehicles have been replaced by less offensive cars. A beautiful location where it seems like time has stood still. (RL)

A truck carrying boats for the Waal crossing is destroyed by an explosion. Kanaaldijk, Heerde. A photo on www.strijdbewijs.nl/market-garden/nijmegen.htm shows this moment from behind the truck, revealing how the shot was made and showing the glasshouses beside the road.

German troops defending the bridge at Nijmegen. Arian Doolaar tells us that this is the Waal bridge seen from the other side of the river.

Arjan adds that the bridge is currently being renovated.

Troops under Major Cook (Robert Redford) attack at Nijmegen bridge. Sargeant Robinson Viaduct over Bemmelsedijk, Nijmegen.

Arjan advises that Sergeant Robinsonviaduct is one of the few places that was filmed at the actual location from WW2.

30 Corps tanks roll through Nijmegen . . . Oude Haven identified by Arjan Doolaar.

Arjan points out that the building on the left is called De Zeemeermin (The Mermaid), because of the decoration surrounding the window above the entrance

. . . . and on towards the bridge.

Paul Alterskye provides this matching view of the bridge at Nijmegen.

  • 'Now' required

30 Corps halt north of Nijmegen, with the bridge visible in the background. Arjan explains that although the scene is set at Prins Mauritssingel, it was filmed 90 kilometres away at Elburgerweg near Dronten with the distant image of the Waal bridge in Nijmegen added in post-production.

Landgoed het Schol, after bombardment. 't Schol suffered a serious fire in 1974 and was available in the state seen here for filming.

An unspecified location, a few miles from Arnhem. At the top of the tower of this church, the generals are discussing the withdrawal of the remaining forces from Oosterbeek. Lebuinuskerk, Deventer in the Salland region of the province of Overijssel. And Paul Murphy agrees having found an almost identical view of the church at https://structurae.net/photos/173370-lebuinuskerk

Frank found that so little has changed here but who did bring out the ugly green plastic chairs??? (RL)

After the withdrawal, Major General Urquhart arrives at General Browning's HQ, somewhere south of Arnhem. This is Matanze in Terwolde, Netherlands identified by Robert Jan Leerink.
