  • 'Now' required

Keith Lawson (Peter Newby) keeps low as he makes his escape from the Approved School where he was a resident.

  • 'Now' required

The young lad makes his way past the locked gates to scale the wall.

  • 'Now' required

Once outside, Keith thumbs a lift as a van approaches. The film's end titles advise that it was "Made entirely on location in Deptford, London, England".

  • 'Now' required

Once Keith is aboard, the Bedford delivery van is driven away, towards London. The van is also seen in 'Ooh, You Are Awful'.

The escapee arrives in London to look for his father. Tower Bridge in London SE1 with The Tower Hotel on St Katharine's Way in the background.

The same location now by Peter.

The van turns a corner in an inner city suburb. The Prince Albert public house on Edward Street at the junction with Amersham Vale and Kerry Road in New Cross SE14. The corner is still there, but nothing else is!

Mark Craig provides this Google view to support the fact that only the corner remains. (RL)

  • 'Now' required

Now alone in the big city, Keith waves and watches as the van drives away. The streets in this area were revisited eight years later for 'Babylon'.

The camera pans, showing the railway line from Deptford to London Bridge and Edward Street passing beneath the bridge to the bottom left. Napier Street heads southward left of centre and the Old Police Station stands on Amersham Vale right of centre.

Mark Craig believes the camera to have been set up on top of the tower block at Staunton Street by Kingfisher Square Medical Centre. Until access to the top floor can be gained to verify Mark sends this Google view. (RL)

A Milkman (Graham Stark) chases after Keith as he steals a pint of milk. Flamingo Court on Hamilton Street in Deptford SE8.

Mark Craig says that Flamingo Court is "much alive and kicking" and received a facelift in the summer of 2014 when this Google View was taken. The gardens have been enlarged and progress has, of course, provided car parking spaces. (RL)

A hungry Keith takes bread as the Baker (David Lodge) returns to his van after making a delivery. The corner of Hamilton Street and Deptford High Street.

Yes, 181 is still there. (JT).

  • 'Now' required

Fruit is also stolen as the Stall-Holder's (Bernard Spear) back is turned.

The White Swan public house stands on the corner of Deptford High Street and Edward Street.

....and there it is.

As the traders take chase, Keith makes his escape. The corner of Napier Street and Douglas Way with Addey House in the background.

Mark provides this Google View of the same spot and wonders whether the trees are the same as in the film. (RL)

The thief continues to run from his pursuers. This is Amersham Vale and in the centre background stands the South East London Secondary School on Stanley Street, since re-branded as the Hatcham Temple Grove Free School.

Mark send this Google View of more or less the same spot showing the re-devlopment. (RL)

Keith comes across a row of houses and takes refuge in an empty basement flat. Amersham Vale, almost opposite the Police Station. The buildings have been demolished.

Mark provides this Google Earth extract admitting that it is only the approximate position of where the house stood. (RL)

When a loaf is taken from his bike's saddle-bag, Chris Barker (Gary Kemp) chases after Keith. Facing south on Amersham Way with the corner of Amersham Grove visible on the extreme left.

I agree with the sadness of Mark Craig that all that lovely housing has gone but this is the value of RS if only we can catch these things in time. The site to the right of Chris Barker was subsequently redeveloped as Deptford Green School, but that closed in 2012 and demolished when it was relocated to a new school nearby. It would seem that the site is now destined to be redeveloped again, back to housing and a park. http://www.deptfordsouthernsites.co.uk/pdf/Amersham_boards_x4.pdf (RL)

An establishing shot of the local Police Station.

Mark Craig with the aid of two contributors to Andrew White's website www.olddeptfordhistory.com who identified this as Burney Street, Greenwich, London SE10 has sent this Google Earth view to confirm. (RL)

Chris arrives outside the Police Station but has second thoughts about entering.

Mark's further Google shot just to prove the point and fill the "Now". (RL)

The youngster continues home, where his mother runs a corner shop. Facing the corner of Edward Street and Kerry Road.

With the aid of Google, Mark shows the new houses and apartments that have been built as part of the re-development, Kerry Road now blocked off. (RL)

Chris goes inside to find Constable Dickie asking his Mum about the "Deptford Dodger". Edward Street in SE14.

Mark says that the modern flats front Kerry Road, leaving the Edward Street frontage, where the house stood in 1972 as a group of bushes. (RL)

Police Constable Dickie (Godfrey James) radios the Police Station before setting off to search the local building sites. Looking towards the railway viaduct and Walnut House on Edward Street.

At least we have the railway viaduct as a reference point in this Google shot from Mark. (RL)

  • 'Now' required

Two Workmen (Unidentified and Roger Avon) are questioned by the Officer. This appears to be land between Stanley Street and Mornington Road with Addey House in the distance.

Beverley Dickie (Eileen Fletcher) catches up with Chris outside Mr. Grimes' house. Amersham Vale with the Police Station prominent in the background.

This Google Streetview from Mark clearly shows the profile of the old police station that is now "The Old Police Station Do-It-Yourself Art Centre" which has its own website. (RL)

Chris darts back into a shop when he sees Beverley approach with Mr. Grimes' laundry. The north end of Tanner's Hill in SE8.

Mark sends this Google Streetview which is as close as he could get to the (former?) newsagents/sweet shop. This part of the street is now pedestrianised. (RL)

After Beverley passes, Chris cycles away. Tanner's Hill with what was once named Clarence Road running to the right.

Mark confirms Tanner's Hill and says that it is where it splits into two before "hitting" New Cross Road. (RL)

Beverley tells her Dad that Chris has 'ducked out' of helping. Tanner's Hill, Deptford.

Indeed, confirmed by Mark and Google. The family butcher W.H.Wellbeloved is still there, they must be good! (RL)

Chris sets out to find Keith's Dad. Scawen Road SE8.

Still there, Kezia Street on the right.

  • 'Now' required

When he finds the address on the film's Petit Cochon Street, Chris dismounts. Scawen Road with Deptford Park on the left.

Chris approaches to knock at the front door. Scawen Road, but there isn't a fully coloured house in the street now. Was it painted for the film? No says Kay Edwards adding that "The house next door wasn't painted, it was covered in a pinky-grey pebbledash a few years before the film was made. I lived in the house for 25 years before moving out in 1987."

Nina Patinas, with a long family in the area, sends this picture of Nos 17 and 18 but regrettably cannot answer the question regarding the colour pink. (RL)

  • 'Now' required

Audrey Lawson (Liz Fraser) tells Chris that she and her husband want nothing to do with Keith. The colours of the house have changed, but perhaps it was the film stock or the processing. hidse529n from Nina Patinas covers this shot as well.

Chris makes out that he's riding away whilst Audrey peers through the window. Scawen Road with Crooke Road to the right.

Yep. (JT).

When Mrs. Lawson leaves the house, Chris starts to follow. The junction of Scawen Road with Crooke Road.

Maybe the dark patch that I had thought was damp, could perhaps have been the original brickwork which remained after local bomb damage. (JT).

Heading to where her husband is working, Audrey walks through town. Comet Street as seen from Deptford High Street.

Another success. (JT).

Chris keeps tabs on Mrs. Lawson as she turns a corner. The Midland Bank at the corner of Deptford High Street and Giffin Street with Douglas Way to the right.

Now a branch of HSBC, and they are lucky it's not a wine bar. (JT).

The youngster watches as Audrey enters the building site where Ted Lawson is working. The fence may have been a prop but there was waste ground on the opposite corner of Deptford High Street and Giffin Street at the time of filming.

No fence, but similar facia, but HSBC instead of Midland.(JT).

Audrey leaves the site after telling Ted that his son is in the area. The corner of Giffin Street with Deptford High Street heading south on the right.

Still the same, even the lamp post. (JT).

Sid (Ben Howard), one of Ted's workmen, follows Chris as he leaves the demolition site after looking for Keith's father.

Mark Craig advises that the former "building site" was in Giffin Street, opposite the HSBC Bank, now it is an open space! (RL)

As Beverley leaves the laundrette, Keith sets off to find his Dad.

Mark provides this Google shot of as it is now. That blue hoarding again! (RL)

Beverley makes her way to Mr. Grimes' house. The Edward Street end of Kerry Road, which has since been realigned.

"Realigned" indeed as confirmed by Mark Craig and Google. (RL)

Keith reads a map as he approaches a corner. The corner of Edward Street and Kerry Road.

Mark and Google confirming that it has rather lost its charm. (RL)

The two bump into each other. The corner of Edward Street and Kerry Road in SE14.

Mark Craig, with the help of Google shows just how much the location has changed. Edwards Street splitting into two with one leg heading off towards Payne Street. (RL)

Beverley recognises the "Deptford Dodger" from his description. Tanner's Hill at the junction with Vanguard Street.

With the help of Google View Mark finds that this is one part that has not been totally re-developed. (RL)

Keith makes his escape as Beverley attempts to call the police. Edward Street with flats on Grinling Place in the background.

Mark Craig found with the aid of Google that the former garage site is now occupied by flats. (RL)

  • 'Now' required

After leaving the broken telephone box, the young girl spots a Policeman. The garage on the corner of Edward Street and Grinling Place has been demolished and replaced.

Chris nears Keith's hiding place. The merest triangle on the top lefthand edge of the screen shot was St Marks church, seen complete in earlier frames. (RL)

Mark provides this Google Earth shot with a similar portion of what is now St Marks Centre on Edward Streets. The site behind the blue hoarding, as reported elsewhere, is to be developed once again for housing and a park. (RL)

As Chris continues cycling, Sid follows. Amersham Grove in SE14.

Mark provides the Google shot of the same stretch ready for the next re-development phase. (RL)

Sid sees Chris enter Keith's hideout in the basement of Mr. Grimes' house and alerts Ted. Amersham Vale with the corner of Amersham Grove on the extreme left.

As Mark reveals whilst the houses have not survived the tree appears to have. Courtesy Google(RL)

Two Fake Policeman leave their hideout. The former garage at the corner of Edward Street and Grinling Place.

Mark finds the spot and with the help of Google Earth advises that it is now a small back-street also named Grinling Place right where the lock-up stood. The tower block is Langford House on Evelyn Street. (RL)

  • 'Now' required

Keith finds his Dad's address. Scawen Road with Evelyn Street in the distance and the junction with Hicks Street left of centre.

Police Officers search the area after the Fake Policemen capture Chris. Deptford Park at the northern entrance from Scawen Road in SE8.

Don't know where all these gates came from, but the background is, more or less, the same. (JT).

The Officer spots the "Deptford Dodger". Scawen Road with buildings on Evelyn Street visible in the left distance.

Yes, there they are. (JT).

Keith starts to run as the Policeman approaches. Facing south-west on Scawen Road.

......with Deptford Park on the left resplendent with new railings. (JT)

Mrs. Lawson is bumped into by Keith and then the pursuing Policeman. Crooke Road looking towards Scawen Road and Deptford Park beyond.

Seems they've got rid of the damp and done a bit of rendering. (JT)

Keith escapes and heads back to his hideout. Crooke Road in SE8.

The tree has grown, and, honest, there are outlines where the two right hand windows were. (JT).

Beverley finds Keith as she leaves Mr. Grimes and they go in search of Chris. Facing the junction of Edward Street and Grinling Place with Mandarin Court to the left.

As close as Mark can get on Google Streetview. (RL)

The pair see Chris's signal for help. The frames either side of this capture suggest that the background building is the now demolished Willow House on Grinling Place.

Mark Craig with the aid of Google and a 1972 OS Map confirms that it is indeed the former site of Willow House, now smart townhouses. Willow House had a row of garages at the front of it, the first of which can be seen in the screen grab. (RL)

After Chris is rescued, the three flee from the Fake Policemen. This appears to be Douglas Way facing Amersham Vale with the remnant of Warwickshire Street to the right.

Yes indeed it is says Mark Craig and supports with this Google view. (RL)

The children sneak into the demolition site as Sid unloads boxes from a dumper. The hole in the fence leads to Douglas Way.

Once again as close as Mark could get with the aid of Google. (RL)

Police Constable Dickie is alerted an arrives at the site. Again, this appears to be a building site between Stanley Street and Mornington Road with Addey House in the distance.

As close as Mark could get to thebasl of Addey House. Courtesy Google. (RL)

Beverley's father calls for back-up after arresting Wykes (Johnny Shannon) when the boxes containing money are found. In the background stands Addey House, Deptford SE8.

Mark Craig provides this Google view of much the same spot using Addey House as a reference. The site is now Margaret McMillan Park.(RL)

Reinforcements leave the Police Station. The back of the Police Station on Napier Street, now renamed Napier Court.

Mark send this Google shot of the back of the Old Police Station in what is now Napier Court with the old gate entrance having been bricked up. (RL)

The Fake Policeman drive to the construction site as part of the plan to move the money.

Amersham Vale once again says Mark Craig but looking south. To the left is the Old Police Station meaning that Gary hid inside one of the houses on the right. The small trees remain and have naturally grown. (RL)

The police cars speed through the streets. Deptford High Street, London SE8.

This Google street view from Mark shows that the globe finials are now painted gold and sit above what is a Pound Shop. The pawnbroker is still there!

Just as the Fake Policemen and the rest of the gang attempt to escape, the police arrive at the site. The corner of Deptford High Street and Giffin Street.

Mark provides this Google shot of the same corner and if the press are to be believed it may not be too long before it is the Midland Bank once again. (RL)
