On a winter morning in Turin at the end of the 19th Century, Omero (Franco Ciolli) leaves his freezing, damp home as Pautasso Domenico (Folco Lulli) descends from his upstairs flat with daughter Adele (Gabriella Giorgelli).

Employees join one another on the road as they shuffle their way to work a fourteen hour day in the Buratti Pavesio factory.

After a brief lunch break, the downhearted workers return to the textile mill. Although the external factory scenes were shot in Fossano, interior filming was carried out in Zagreb, Croatia.

Having formed a committee to complain about their working conditions, Pautasso, Cesarina (Elvira Tonelli) and Martinetti (Bernard Blier) head to speak with the factory bosses.

Following the workers' failed attempt to stop work in protest at their conditions, Pautasso leaves the factory offices after receiving a fine and two weeks suspension for sounding the whistle an hour early. Steve Randall identifies this as the gates of Franck, a coffee, tea and snacks company located at Vodovodna Ulica 20 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
