Walking Stick, The

Finishing work late as usual, Deborah Dainton (Samantha Eggar) makes her way along a crowded platform at Bond Street station. IMDB suggests that this is Aldwych.

An already packed westbound Central Line train glides into the station.

Travelling just one stop, Deborah leaves Oxford Circus station and makes her way to a nearby bus stop. The exit from Oxford Circus station at the north east corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street in W1.

As the shot zooms out, a wider view of the busy junction is seen. Oxford Circus with Oxford Street to the top and Regent Street to the bottom.

A bus towards home pulls up at the stop. This is Oxford Street W1 with the corner of Holles Street in the centre distance. The 137 bus no longer calls at this stop but the post box visible to the right is still in situ.

The reclusive young woman passes Hampstead Parish Church’s Additional Burial Ground on Holly Walk in NW3.

Deborah reaches the house where she lives with her Parents and sisters Arabella and Sarah. Approaching Holly Place after passing Benham’s Place on Holly Walk in Hampstead.

They seem to be keeping the road surface just below that air brick. (RL)

The morning after meeting Leigh Hartley at a party thrown by her sisters, Deborah arrives for work at Whittington’s Fine Art Auctioneers. The frontage of Distillers' House on St. James’s Square SW1.

Deborah succumbs to Leigh’s advances and a date is arranged on a Sunday evening. The entrance to the National Film Theatre, part of the South Bank Centre off Belvedere Road SE1.

The two discuss the film they have just seen as they leave the National Film Theatre. Outside the National Film Theatre beneath Waterloo Bridge. The location appears in 'Joanna'.

The struggling artist escorts Deborah to his beaten old car. Beneath Waterloo Bridge in SE1 with the Savoy Hotel’s clock tower silhouetted in the right distance.

I can only think that the bridge line could have been achieved before the BFI frontage was changed. (RL)

Agreeing to go for a drink, Leigh drives Deborah back to his studio. Old Bailey EC4 with The George public house on the corner of Fleet Lane to the left, the Church of St. Sepulchre without Newgate visible in the centre distance and the Central Criminal Court to the right. The location is seen in many other productions including ‘The Naked Edge’, ‘The Long Dark Hall’, ‘Black Orchid’, ‘Pressure’, 'The Pot Carriers', 'Links of Justice' and ‘Gideon’s Day’.

Fleet Lane with Limeburner Lane to the immediate left and the railway viaduct carrying the line into Holborn Viaduct station crossing the left background in front of the Congregational Memorial Hall & Library. Limeburner Lane was constructed in the 1960s and was originally named as Seacoal Lane, the same as the lane that it was to take the course of and later largely replace. ‘Rude Boy’ features a scene shot on Limeburner Lane.

The railway was removed in the early 1990s and the area redeveloped with the road renamed as St. George’s Court. (PW)

Turning off the main road in the London docklands, Leigh steers his Ford Consul though a gateway. This is facing north on Preston’s Road in E14 where a swing bridge carries the road over Blackwall Entrance Lock.

Inside the gates, Leigh steers to park outside his home on the edge of West India Dock. Across Blackwall Entrance Lock stand properties on Crossharbour.

After showing off some of his work, Leigh drives Deborah home. Holly Place on Holly Walk in NW3 with St. Mary’s church to the right.

On another day, Leigh takes Deborah to a house auction where she is introduced to Jack Foil as a fellow antique dealer. Hall Barn, Windsor End to the south of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.

With the auction seemingly comprised mostly of junk, Leigh and Deborah get to know each other better as they walk through the grounds of the house. Hall Barn House and the surrounding estate is also seen in ‘Take a Girl Like You’, 'Bedazzled', 'A Yank in Ermine', 'Anoop and the Elephant', 'Gosford Park', ‘Chariots of Fire’ and ‘Nobody Runs Forever’.

When she discovers that Leigh is married, her cold remarks over the phone bring him to her. Looking towards Mount Vernon on Holly Walk in Hampstead. Footage for ‘The Killing of Sister George’ was shot in the distance and this section of road also appears in 'Diamonds for Breakfast'.

At Deborah’s suggestion, the two take one of Leigh’s paintings to an Art Dealer. The north-east side of Berkeley Square in W1 with Berkeley Square House to the left of centre. Now settling down together, the couple decide to go into the antique business.

Leigh takes Deborah to Beaconsfield where they view suitable premises. The frontages stand on London End in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.

Deborah points out that they can't afford the shop. London End with buildings on Wycombe End in the distance.

Leigh reveals that someone he knows will pay £500 for information about Whittington’s security arrangements. Leigh explains that the Woman called to advise that his father was ill. Alongside the lock at the New Blackwall entrance to Blackwall Basin of the West India and Millwall Docks.

Following a row about Leigh’s participation in the job, Deborah begins to reveal information about the guards and alarms at Whittington's. Hampstead High Street NW3 with the corner of Oriel Place to the left.

Details about the basement strongroom are divulged. Facing south-eastward on Hampstead High Street with the King William IV public house on the corner of Perrin’s Lane to the extreme right. Gordon Hawtin draws our attention to the white buildings which were the car showrooms of Rowland Smith with stood at 77 to 81.

I am very surprised that 'Hampstead' allowed that development change. (RL)

Eventually persuaded to take part in the theft of £200,000 from her employer, Deborah hides in a cupboard inside the building. Outside Distillers' House on St. James’s Square in SW1.

Police are alerted when two alarms are accidentally tripped by gang members Ted and Bertie.

The S-Type Jaguar corners to continue on its way to the scene of the robbery.

A Policeman rushes to the back doors of Whittington’s but arrives too late to prevent the robbers from escaping. A studio set included for completeness.

Disturbed by what she has discovered about Leigh, Deborah asks her sister Sarah Dainton (Bridget Turner) whether she or Arabella knew the painter before the party.

Surrounded by traffic, Deborah sits along with her thoughts. Park Lane, opposite Grosvenor House in London W1.

Reaching a decision, Deborah posts a letter to Inspector Malcolm who is investigating the robbery at Whittington’s.
