King of Thieves

Over archive footage, a Narrator explains that, to foil thieves, the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company has opened with its own giant strongroom. Looking north along Hatton Garden EC1 with number 22 on the right.

Following dinner on the evening before her hospital appointment, Lynne Reader (Francesca Annis) tells her husband Brian (Michael Caine) to keep out of mischief as the two head for drinks at The Crazy Coqs Jazz Club.

Terry Perkins (Jim Broadbent) watches as John Kenny Collins (Tom Courtenay) sets of powerful home made fireworks, explaining that "Believe it or not, that was a Roman candle."

Leaving the pyrotechnic excitement behind, Terry returns to work at his mundane job in a fast food kitchen.

Basil divulges that he has obtained a key to the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company's vault. PW found that this is looking west along Hop Gardens which runs between St. Martin's Lane and Bedfordbury.

With nothing in the fridge and unopened mail in the hallway, Brian leaves the house and catches the bus towards London for a meeting with Basil.

Changing buses, Brian gets closer to Hatton Garden. Looking through Tower Bridge from Butler’s Wharf in SE1 with More London on Riverside in the left distance.

Given that the screen capture was taken from a crane and viewing over the gangway this was the best I could achieve from terra firma. (RL)

That night, the pair let themselves into the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company's premises. Outside 88-90 Hatton Garden at the corner with Greville Street.

Recruited into the gang, Danny Jones (Ray Winstone) and Carl Wood (Paul Whitehouse) drive to meet with Brian. Looking south on the A1011 Silvertown Way with traffic signals at the junction of Tidal Basin Way in the left background.

Travelling with John, Terry calls Danny to check the route they're taking. Facing east on the A40 Westway near the W2 / W9 border in Westbourne Park and yes, the road sign in the left background is showing destinations for the opposite direction.

Footage from earlier robbery films helps the journey to pass and the gang soon converge on a remote shed.

With the job explained to everyone, preparations are made for the heist. Looking towards the west side of Hatton Garden from outside number 24.

At the start of the Easter weekend, Basil makes his way to the vault as the others arrive in their van. The junction of Hatton Garden and Greville Street.

Told that it's a disguise when Danny asks about his hair, Basil opens the door to the Safe Deposit in view of one of the many cameras. Outside the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit building on Hatton Garden.

The van is moved to a side entrance of the building. Facing the corner of Greville Street and Hatton Garden. After their second-hand hydraulic ram fails on them, the gang leave Hatton Garden. Facing the Bank of England at the corner of Princes Street and Threadneedle Street in EC2.

While Brian takes a shower and the others relax inside, Billy ‘The Fish’ Lincoln (Michael Gambon) arrives outside Kenny's house.

Meeting in a café, Basil tells Brian that everyone thinks he's lost his nerve. Station Approach in Fulham SW6, opposite Putney Bridge station.

During the day, the area in front of the café is used as a bus stand, which can't be ideal for the outside customers wishing to sun themselves as it faces south. I managed to grab this just as the bus on the right was moving into the space vacated by its previous occupant. A close thing though. SJ

With the robbery discovered after the Easter Weekend, Detective Inspector Johnson (Matt Bardock) and Detective Sergeant Day (Claire Lichie) arrive outside the Safe Deposit. The junction formed by Hatton Garden and Greville Street.

Brian catches a train to Margate. This is on the south Kent coast below Aycliff and the train is approaching Dover. In the background is Shakespeare Tunnel with Shakespeare Cliff to the left.

As the Detective Inspector reports that the robbery was carried out by a highly intelligent, organised gang with both strength and stamina, the train from London arrives at the seaside town. Margate railway station on Station Approach off Canterbury Road in Margate, Kent.

While Basil travels to Margate after a less than amicable share out of the haul, Danny and Terry walk away from the scrapyard where the Transit is about to be crushed. Identified by Antony Blair as London Auto Parts on Alperton Lane in Perivale. Taken at the bottom of the yard with the railway bridge to the right.

At his allotment, Danny and Terry cover Carl in petrol before explaining to him that he knows nothing about the heist.

Danny suggests that Terry doesn't trust him as the two walk away from a fuel soaked Carl.

On the pier at Margate, Brian learns that Basil came away with just eighty grand. Beneath the light at the end of the pier arm at Margate Harbour in Thanet, Kent.

Basil tells Brian that his friends won. Alongside the Turner Contemporary art gallery on The Rendezvous, Margate.

Although only opened in April 2011, the Turner Contemporary was closed "capital works" when I arrived. (PW)

After lunch with Basil in Margate, Brian returns to the capital. Neil Bays contacted Jonathan Horswell of the Railway Movie Database and identified this view as leaving the Essex portal of the Thames Tunnel with the Queen Elizabeth II bridge carrying the A282 over the river in the background.

The police begin surveillance of suspects after CCTV footage is examined. The Porchester Centre stands on Queensway in W2 and is also seen in 'Radio Cab Murder'.

After the meeting, Terry gets into his car as he parts company with Danny and Kenny. Looking south-eastward on Milson Road in W14.

Brian phones Basil, telling him that he's just been told that a fair share of the haul was handed over to him. This is Fishmonger's Hall Wharf on the Thames Path in EC4, looking south with London Bridge to the left and the tower of Southwark Cathedral just visible in the centre distance. The wharf also appears in 'The Millionairess' and 'Escape Route'.

Just to the right is hoarding blocking off any further aligning the lamppost, which has not moved, with London Bridge. SJ

Tailed by Detectives, Brian catches the night bus to Soho and The Crazy Coqs Jazz Club.

On a rainy day in London, police listen in on Terry's conversation with his Granddaughter. The River Thames with London Bridge and the towers of Cannon Street station to the left and Old Billingsgate in EC3 on the right.

Terry bends down to allow his Granddaughter to put a hat on his head whist her mother Terri Robinson (Kellie Shirley) locks up the house. Antony Blair identifies this as number 4 Oakdene in Ealing W13.

Antony found that the porch entrance has been altered in the intervening months.

As his daughter gets into the car, Terry asks if he can borrow her house while she is away. Looking out of Oakdene onto The Dene in Ealing as located by Antony Blair.

Frankie (Adam Leese) hands over a smelter to Terry and Danny. In the background, the Central Line passes over the route of the water main from Kempton Park in Surrey to Cricklewood and the Lea Valley which passes beneath May Gardens in Perivale behind the camera.

Cash is handed over as Danny carries the smelter to the car. Beyond the embankment carrying the Central Line can be seen the roofs of businesses on Alperton Lane.
