Bespoke Overcoat, The

The film opens with Morrie (David Kossoff) returning to his basement flat where the day and the events leading up to it are told. 63 Old Montague Street, London E1 as established by Dave W.

Dave provides us with the scene of the long lost basement.

Morrie walks behind the coffin of his friend Fender (Alfie Bass) on a handcart being pushed by the Gravedigger (Alf Dean). Ray Glenister found Old Montague Street, London E1. The café/restaurant on the right of the screen capture was No.43 on the corner with Monthope Street. Both have now long gone.

Upon reaching the Cemetery they move slowly to the burial location. With thanks to Ray for locating Capture 2, Dave W established the cemetery as Brady Street Cemetery, London E1. The white, central background, pointed "headstone" is the northern most end wall of the Brady Street Mansions, now demolished. In addition, to the right, can be seen the roof line of the Brady Street Dwellings, also long gone.

Morrie watches as the coffin containing his friend Fender is unloaded from a handcart by the Gravedigger. The background wall seen here and in Capture 6 is not evident now or in any available photographs of the location at that time. Coupled with the fact that it is unlikely that permission would have been sought or granted to dig a grave it is considered unlikely that this was filmed in the Cemetery.

A Rabbi presides over the short ceremony. Dave W continues to ponder on whether that lattice superstructure and its paraphernalia could be a match to the Spitalfields Coal Depot sidings.

At the graveside Morrie holds onto the overcoat that he has made for Fender before throwing it down, onto the coffin. See Capture 4.

Morrie makes his way home through the headstones. Brady Street Cemetery, London E1 Dave says that from this capture the angle lets us see the railway viaduct and arches of Spitalfields Coal Depot -- long gone though a stub of the viaduct can still be found branching off the main line at Hemming Street.

Fender persuades Morrie to help him steal a coat from the employer who fired him after years of service. Outside Ranting & Co's warehouse, Morrie asks the ghost of Fender (Alfie Bass) if he can walk through walls.

Fender wanders off into the Aether with his new sheepskin coat and Morrie commences praying while the world outside his flat continues as always. Old Montague Street, London E1 looking eastward. Casson Street off to the left and Greatorex Street off to the right in the distance

As if from the basement, Dave took this shot of the Street revealing that bollards remain a feature.
