The film opens with a short pan showing a panorama of Venice, capital of Veneto on the Adriatic coast of Italy.

Making the most of their outing in Venice, the film crew shoot footage for what initially appears more like a travelogue than a feature film. The Lion of St. Mark on the Torre dell'Orologio in Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square).

Tilting down the Clock Tower on the north side of Piazza San Marco brings the clock face into frame.

It's moved but I still can't work out what time it says! (PW)

Joseph Schmidt's voice rises as he sings what would now be known as the title track and the view moves on to St. Mark’s Campanile, which stands in the eastern corner of Piazza San Marco.

With refurbishment work continuing behind me, this is the best comparison possible. (PW)

To the left stands the west facade of St. Mark's basilica with the Bacino di San Marco (San Marco Basin) visible in the right background beyond the eastern column on Riva degli Schiavoni.

The western column, carrying St. Theodore, on Riva degli Schiavoni with the Campanile in the centre background.

Looking towards the west in Piazza San Marco shows that Venice has always been a popular tourist destination.
