During the First World War Lieutenant Richard Saville jumps onto a train as it leaves Portsmouth station. A reversed shot of former Royal Train locomotive 30119, a LSWR T9 class engine built in 1899 and withdrawn in 1953, departs with the service. Peter Brown, who is usually well informed with railway locations, considers this to be Waterloo Station, the platforms that served Windsor as they had a different, lower roof and have now been replaced by the erstwhile Eurostar platforms.

Getting to know Miss Lucinda Bentley on the journey, the Lieutenant embarks on a short romantic holiday with the young woman. The Dorking direction platform at Shalford station off Horsham Road in Shalford, Surrey located by Jonathan Horswell.

The two fall in love and Lucinda accepts Saville’s proposal. RP identifies this as bridge number 167 crossing the Grand Union Canal as it cuts through Cassiobury Park in Watford, Hertfordshire adding that the location features in 'Hand in Hand'.

Following their tryst, Lucinda catches a train alone after changing her mind about marriage. Identified by Jonathan Horswell, this is the Guildford direction platform at Shalford station with the background bridge carrying The Street over the railway to meet Horsham Road.
John Harwood found that Shalford station now a soulless place.
