If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.

We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

  • 'Now' required

The first episode "Adelina" opens with a shot of the Salita Cinesi, north of the centre of Naples, previously seen in "The Gold of Naples". SJ

  • 'Now' required

Bailiffs arrive at Loren and Mastroianni's house known as 7 Vico Carbone in the film, actually Via Luca Samuele Cagnazzi, which runs north off Salita Cinesi.

A visit to a lawyer becomes necessary.

This turns out to be in Ercolano. Looking up Rampa Bosco from Corso Resina, to the north-west of Ercolano Scavi. SJ

The courtyard of the lawyer's establishment.

The Villa Signorini on the corner of Corso Resina and Tirrena Inferiore opposite Rampa Bosco.

Loren sells black market cigarettes to scrape her living. These are the steps leading from the northern end of Via Guiseppe Piazzi up to the Via dei Miracoli, east of captures 1 & 2.

  • 'Now' required

Loren finds out that she can't be jailed if she's pregnant. And word gets around quickly thanks to the local lads chanting the same.

  • 'Now' required

They take their chant to the bay of Naples, more precisely the Via Francesco Caracciolo.

  • 'Now' required

Loren shows off the proof of being "incinta". Salita Cinesi again.

  • 'Now' required

Another view as above.

  • 'Now' required

Loren is finally imprisoned. This is the rear of the carcere Poggioreale, which can be seen from the corner of Piazza Giovanni Falcone and Via Francesca Lauria.

  • 'Now' required

Mastroianni serenades Loren from the same corner.

  • 'Now' required

Awaiting Loren's release.

  • 'Now' required

The family cross the Via Nuova Poggioreale. The grey block behind has been redeveloped.

  • 'Now' required

The queue at the prison's maing gate. The tram lines have moved to the centre of the Via Nuova Poggioreale.

The second instalment: "Anna" starts in Milan. Looking north-west at the Teatro alla Scala from the Piazza della Scala... Straight ahead, en route to Erba and Como, the road is Via Giuseppe Verdi. Turning right for Lecco and Brescia, the road becomes Via Alessandro Manzoni.

The entrance to the Gallerie d'Italia museum is visible on the right. The Milano 1928 type streetcar in the background belongs to Line 1 of the now Azienda Trasporti Milanesi. Taken by Manuel Gurtner who braved the Italian traffic and was not diverted from his task too much by the model behind him changing into a wedding dress for promotional work in nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade. (SJ)

Loren's Rolls stops to pick up Mastroianni at one of the Navigli in Milan ... More precisely, Via Lodovico il Moro along the Naviglio Grande canal looking westwards. The Peter Witt type streetcar in the background belongs to Line 2 of the then Azienda Traviaria Municipali Milano. The apartment building visible behind Marcello is located at Strada Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 156. Manuel G (SJ)

Manuel replaced his own Jan 2020 Google shot with this dazzler and he adds, "The point for the comparison shot is pretty much in the exact same spot where the Silver Cloud Convertible stopped back then. To get there almost 60 years later, I also used the streetcar for Piazzale Negrelli to reach the medieval canal, with somewhat modern articulated motorcars from 1955 now running on the line 2." (SJ)

Driving out of the city towards Varese ... ah not quite so: see Manuel's detective work in the now.

"We are in the south-eastern outskirts of Milano in the vicinity of Linate airport. In the comune San Donato Milanese the ever beautiful Sophia, dressed by Dior, drives away from the intersection of Via Rogoredo with Via Bonarelli towards the motorway, while the ENI headquarters is visible in the background." Manuel/Google (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

The couple passes the Autogrill Villoresi Ovest on the Autostrada dei Laghi.

  • 'Now' required

They take a break from the drive ... Sophia and Marcello on the banks of the Ticino river, possibly in the vicinity of the Malpensa airport, adds Manuel G. (SJ)

Mastroianni swerves to avoid the boy and hits a tractor. Loren is not best pleased. The since-widened Viale Aeronautica, Busto Arsizio, Varese ... See Manuel's now for the pylon!

More accurately near where the then, now expanded, feeder road towards the Malpensa airport crosses the Milano - Domodossola railway, as the power line pylon in the background proves. Manuel/Google (SJ)

  • 'Now' required

Episode 3 "Mara" opens with a shot from Loren's apartment on the Piazza Navona, Rome. The location features in several other productions including 'Locker Sixty Nine', 'Blue Murder at St. Trinian's', 'The Seven Hills of Rome', 'The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone', 'The Adventurers' and 'Rome Adventure'.

Mastroianni sits on a bench disconsolately.

A similar disconsolate scene on a rainy night on the east side of the Piazza Navona. SJ

He gazes up at the light on in Loren's flat.

The lights are still on. SJ

  • 'Now' required

Loren's next door neighbour (Giovanni Ridolfi) spots her in a shop on the Piazza della Minerva, just south-east of the Pantheon: note the obelisk and elephant behind him.

  • 'Now' required

The next door neighbours escort Ridolfi on a coach to his religious seminar.

  • 'Now' required

And the coach leaves the now-pedestrianised Piazza Navona.
