Love Ban, The

Mick Goonahan (Hywel Bennett) appears at the front door of his suburban home as his wife Kate reverses off the driveway to start the journey to school.

On his way to the office, Mick begins to imagine scantily clad women on the road ahead when he stops at a zebra crossing. High Street in Feltham, Greater London with The Centre on the left and the since demolished Prince of Wales public house at the corner of Bedfont Lane to the top right.

Coming out of the building, a Nun (Parnell McGarry) greets Kate as she approaches with two of her children.

Mick arrives at the lingerie factory where he works in the marketing department. Dating from 1937, this is the Berlei factory on Bath Road, opposite Leigh Road, in Slough, Berkshire which was demolished in 1984. The building also features in 'The Bliss of Mrs Blossom'.

Arranging to meet Kate, Joyce (Georgina Hale) parks outside the Municipal Offices where a family planning lecture is being given. This is Walton Court on Station Avenue in Walton on Thames, Surrey.

On a break from work, Mick takes a walk along the river. Upper Mall alongside the Thames in London W6 with Hammersmith Bridge and the then new Charing Cross Hospital in the distance.

After leaving the lecture, Joyce reverses her car into Kate’s Volvo 240 Estate. The early 60s Walton Court in Walton on Thames was formerly the headquarters of the Birds Eye food processing company.

In an attempt to get an accurate shot, Paul Enticknap took several pictures but this one shows that, yes, there are buildings beyond the wall and trees.

On the pretense of making a delivery, Albert drives towards the Goonahan's house.

Parking outside, Albert is led into the building by Jackie, the Goonahan's au pair.

At the vehicle pound, Kate watches in the rear view mirror as Joyce gets into her retrieved car.

Joyce gets out of her Toyota Celica after running into the back of Kate’s car.

Kate arrives home as Albert gets into his van after making his way from the back of the house.

Crashing into the rear of Kate's car after swerving to miss Albert's van, Mick gets out of his Volvo 144 as his wife runs to see if he is alright.

Leaving a barber shop where he finds Father Andrew having a hair cut, Mick walks through town on a mission to buy contraceptives. The wall to the right separates a branch of J. Sainsbury from Barclay's Bank on High Street in Feltham which is confirmed by Jim Langridge who adds that the store has been demolished but the bank survives.

Kate enters a chemist to fill a prescription for contraceptives.

Having entered the same shop, Mick backs towards the door as the Chemist (Ellis Dale) tries to help.

A despondent Mick leaves the chemist. This is Staines, since 2012 with added “upon-Thames”, and this is Church Street with Staines Town Hall on Market Square in the left background. The Town Hall stands in for a French bank in ‘The File of the Golden Goose’ and also appears in 'Side by Side' and 'Birth of the Beatles' as well as 'Ali G Indahouse'.

Almost hidden by scaffolding, the Town Hall stands in the centre background of Nick Boorman's comparison showing that the use of a telescopic lens for filming foreshortened the distance making the building appear closer than it actually is.

Mick walks past a billboard advertising birth control before seeing himself in one of the posters. Staines in Surrey with now demolished buildings on High Street in the background. The hoarding that carries the 1970 ‘Pregnant Man’ advertising appears to be a prop.

Nick provides this wider view through scaffolding taken at the corner of Church Street and Clarence Street and confirms that the Johnson and Clarke building was knocked down in the 80s.

Looking across the road, Mick sees another barber shop. The shot pans past Debenham’s and Tesco to find number 3 Church Street in Staines, Surrey.

As Christmas approaches, Jackie (Angharad Rees) pushes her baby son's pram through the town's shopping precinct. From a distinctive piece of sculpture seen within this sequence Sean McArdle identifies this as The Centre in Feltham, Greater London, since re-vitalised! (RL)
