Innocent Bystanders

To the sound of guard dogs barking, the film opens with a line of Prisoners shuffling into Volochanka prison camp in Siberia.

When ten of the internees carry out a daring escape, one of their number is shot dead.

After lunching together, Blake (Dana Andrews) and Loomis (Donald Pleasence) leave the bowler hatted Englishman's club.

The American tells Loomis that Group 3 are supposed to be the best intelligence unit in the States but there is a leak in the Middle East. Seen from The Mall in SW1, this is facing the Duke of York Monument on Carlton House Terrace. The area around the column appears in several other productions including ‘Brannigan’, ‘Man on the Run’, ’28 Days Later’ and ‘That Riviera Touch’ while the steps can be seen in ‘A Window in London’.

Coming to Loomis for help, Blake explains that he needs Department K for a job. The Queen Victoria Memorial at the western end of The Mall in SW1 with the gates of Buckingham Palace forming the background.

Very tricky to match the depth here, so I plumped for the foreground. SJ

Blake continues that they are looking for a Russian named Aaron Jacob Kaplan who broke out of Volochanka last year. From The Mall, facing the Queen Victoria Memorial with Buckingham Palace beyond.

Given where the sun is, the original must have been shot very early in the morning. SJ

Loomis is told that Kaplan is a water engineer who was on the verge of revolutionising countries where fresh water is scarce. Looking down onto Trafalgar Square in WC2.

Blake tells Loomis that Kaplan is in Turkey and has a brother Marcus who lives in New York.

I'm quite pleased with the matching row of trees on the right. SJ

Loomis correctly guesses that the KGB will kill Kaplan now they've discovered that the American's are seeking him out. Blake's tough assignment is for Department K to find Kaplan. The Wellington Arch on Apsley Way at Hyde Park Corner W1. The location also appears in ‘I Don't Want to Be Born’, ‘The Sandwich Man’, ‘And Now for Something Completely Different’, ’84 Charing Cross Road’, ‘Indiscreet’, ‘Columbo: Dagger of the Mind’, ‘Strange Bedfellows’, ‘The Hostage’, ‘The Hypnotist’ and ‘Three Hats for Lisa’.

When his offer of half a million dollars is turned down, Blake tells Loomis that his price for the job is too high. The top of the steps leading from Bridge Street down towards Westminster Pier below Victoria Embankment in SW1 with the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament in the background.

Following a meeting with Loomis, ageing agent John Craig is sent to New York to meet with Aaron Kaplan's brother. Looking up at Millbank Tower on Millbank SW1.

As two other agents, Joanna Benson and Andrew Royce, are sent to Turkey, Craig waits in the Manhattan Plaza Complex. The base of the Grade II listed Millbank Tower dating from 1963.

Getting out of his Chauffeur driven car, Marcus Kaplan (Ferdy Mayne) walks towards John Craig (Stanley Baker). Seen in the background during a number of productions, closer views of the building can be seen in ‘Alfie Darling’ and ‘The Liquidator’.

Craig speaks with Marcus, telling him that he has a message from Aaron. Millbank Tower, now styled as part of the Millbank Centre, on Millbank in SW1.

Finding Miriam Loman (Geraldine Chaplin), Craig takes her in search of her guardian Kaplan. Heatherden Hall at Pinewood Studions in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. The studio location also features in 'White Cargo', 'The Plague of the Zombies', ‘The Early Bird’, ‘Twice Around the Daffodils’, ‘From Russia With Love’, ‘Penny Gold’, ‘The Vulture’, ‘Some Girls Do’, ‘Go For a Take’ and ‘Bugsy Malone’.

Driving to the airport after finding Kaplan, Craig and Miriam are followed by American agent Harry Bigelow. The Andalusian countryside stands in for the USA as well as Cyprus and Turkey.

With Bigelow dealt with, the two continue to a petrol station on their way to the airport.

Intending to take her with him to Turkey, Craig allows Miriam out of the car to go to the bathroom.

Arriving in Turkey, the pair leave Ankara International Airport. This is Málaga Airport with the Control Tower on the left which was replaced in 2002. Other views of the airport are seen in 'A Touch of Class' and 'The Running Man'.

In a hired car, Craig and Miriam make their way across country.

The light is fading by the time the pair reach the El Ibrice hotel.

Locking Miriam in their room, Craig leaves the hotel to buy new clothes for her.

The next morning, Craig spots a suspicious car on the road as the two pause during the onward drive.

The Chrysler New Yorker enters a village.

A Mechanic works under a car as Craig parks the sedan.

Taking his suitcase from the car, Craig surveys their next accommodation.

After Royce and Benson are led to Craig and Miriam's room by Omar the hotel proprietor, the two younger agents interrogate their captives at a remote farm.

Leaving Craig and Miriam tied up inside the stables, Royce drives away from the farm.

Escaping from their bonds, Craig and Miriam break out of their prison.

Taking an old Ebro truck from the farm, Craig and Miriam arrive near Aaron Kaplan's hideout.

Craig approaches the entrance of the building.

Taking Aaron Kaplan along, Craig persuades Omar to take the three of them to Cyprus.

Leaving his passengers on the moored boat, Omar returns to the harbour with a car.

Driving away from the port, the four make their way towards the house that Omar has rented for $50 a day.

Immediately after arriving at the remote house, Craig begins to question Aaron Kaplan about his escape from Volochanka.

As Craig finds Loomis sitting with Royce and Benson in a the bar at the Phanos Hotel, two Foreign Agents watch from across the road.

The Agents run for their car when the Britons appear from the building and drive away.
