Reaching his home port, he explains to the police that he landed the people they are looking for in a small cove from which they will not be able to climb out.
Additional Information:
With thanks to Andrew Punter for introducing us to this film and providing all the uncredited “now” shots together with supporting screen captures and text. Uploaded together with additional screen captures by Richard Lovejoy.
Whilst thanks is given to Marcus Lewis of the Fowey Harbour Heritage Society along the way I have to give this specific acknowledgement and many thanks to him for his tireless assistance in establishing the location of some of the much changed river frontages. I also spent much time enjoying the Society’s excellent virtual tour of the harbour https://foweyharbour.co.uk/360/# But I still needed to ask him questions!
Can you help:
If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Images submitted must be in Landscape orientation, as would be seen on the cinema screen, not Portrait.
We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

A car approaches a small Cornish coastal town. Identified by Marcus as the A390 looking NNE, the car is travelling towards Gunnislake over the only bridge over the Tamar before the Tamar bridge at Saltash, this was once the main road into Cornwall.
- Capture 2
- 'Now' required

The cars stops and the three occupants get out of the car top view the port. See Capture 5, the appearance suggests that this could well be the road between the Bodinnick ferry slipway and Mixtow as Marcus advises.

The three occupants to show the characters. Anna Krassin (Delphi Lawrence), Clifford (Allan Cuthbertson) and Dimitri Krassin (Anton Diffring). See Capture 2.

They look out to the town and harbour. Fowey, Cornwall.

This establishing shot of Fowey harbour is taken from above Boddinick on the opposite side of the river. The fishing port of Fowey, around which all the land side action takes place, can be seen on the right hand side of the picture.

Anna thinks that she spots the ship that they will be travelling on. No, that is Dutch, they will be travelling on a French one. Marcus Lewis of the Fowey Harbour Heritage Society advises that the ship is moored at No 4 loading jetty, up the river from the town. No 4 he says is still there and the sheds to the right have been redeveloped into a large quay, adding that this shot would have been taken from the road between the Bodinnick ferry slipway and Mixtow. Greenery growth might prevent a "now" shot being taken.....but who knows?

The three visit the “Old Ferry Inn” where they are noticed by leave before the locals at closing time. Hall Terrace, Bodinnick, Fowey.
- Capture 7

Albert Pascoe (Donald Houston) asks his mother Alice (Fay Compton) whether the “girls are asleep mother?” and they leave home. 12 Hall Terrace, Bodinnick, Fowey.
- Capture 8
- 'Now' required

Meanwhile Clifford and Dimitri, standing on the quayside select the moored boat as their transport to France. If Capture 11 shows the boat leaving Mixtow Creek this could well be the quayside there.
- Capture 9
- 'Now' required

On returning to their car they see Albert and his mother bringing in their nets. Marcus places this as the beach opposite Golant, South of Penpol Creek with the railway line to Fowey docks on the opposite bank. This scene would normally have been netting sandeels not salmon!
- Capture 10
- 'Now' required

Clifford approaches Albert to find out about the ownership of the boat. The “Lioness” is owned by a Mr Langford. The beach opposite Golant, South of Penpol Creek once more.
- Capture 11
- 'Now' required

Albert agrees to take them for £100. Dimitri casts off and mother Alice says “Goodbye and take care” from the row boat, but the net is caught up with the boat and she falls in the water. Marcus confirms that No 4 loading jetty can be seen towards the top left and in consequence this sequence would have been taken from the middle of Mixtow Creek.
- Capture 12
- 'Now' required

Alice manages to swim to shore and return home to bed. The following morning all is calm… Looking out from what is now 'The Old Quay House Hotel'. So this is in fact, the old quay house before it was turned into boutique luxury hotel.
- Capture 13
- 'Now' required

…..and local lads see her boat drift by and on boarding find four salmon. Hard to believe, but Marcus confirms that this is indeed the river side of 'The Old Quay House Hotel' 28 Fore Street. The pattern of the stonework confirms beyond doubt.

They race to tell Dad.......
- Capture 15

- Capture 16

By the time Dad gets to the water the boat has drifted off and he is concerned that Whiteway (William Hartnell), the water bailiff “do see it”. To the left out of sight is the Fowey Gallants Sailing Club, Amity Court, and the houses here on North Street visible.

Harry leaves his children at his cottage gate before he joins the chase for the salmon. Exiting Albert Place into Fore Street, Fowey.

The gate dwarf walls would appear to have been rebuilt in the recent past, replacing the original rendered ones shown in the film.
- Capture 18
- 28 Jun 2020

Harry runs up the street past Fred Trewin (John Blythe) the Fishmonger towards the old Post Office that is the large white building in the background on his way to his boat. Fred then joins the chase, Fore Street.

Fred Trewin’s Fishmongers is now the Quay Bakery. The original protruding brickwork can still be seen and the window also appears exactly as original.
- Capture 19
- 28 Jun 2020

Whiteway’s wife (Doris Yorke) runs up the same street to the Custom House to tell her husband about the salmon in Albert’s boat. Fore Street, Fowey.

Whiteway’s wife was passing what is now The Fowey River Gallery.
- Capture 20
- 28 Jun 2020

At Custom House Mrs Whiteway gives her husband the news about the salmon in the harbour

The Custom House was on a quay, now named Custom House Hill, off Fore Street between the Fowey River Gallery and the old Post Office. It is now converted into living accommodation, as has the old Post Office.
- Capture 21
- 'Now' required

Meanwhile Harry jumps into his boat. These are the steps to the left of what is now 'The Old Quay House Hotel' as viewed from the river.
- Capture 22
- 28 Jun 2020

Mrs Whiteway shows her husband Albert’s boat. Here looking towards the Fowey Town Quay. However, there would have been a continuity problem here as Whiteway would have had to have been on the opposite side of the estuary to where the Custom House was to have this view.

A somewhat busier scene now.
- Capture 23
- 'Now' required

Mr Whiteway gets his boat out. This is motor boat 'Molly' owned at the time by the Tomlin family who had been boatmen on the river for several generations, the boat was sold to Falmouth about 25 years ago, maybe longer. With thanks once again to Marcus who also confirms that the house and mooring here is that of 'Stepaside', North Street, Fowey.
- Capture 24
- 'Now' required

Harry gets there first but they both find that the salmon has already disappeared.
- Capture 25
- 28 Jun 2020

It would seem that Fred Trewin won the race to claim the salmon and lands at the quay with the salmon already in a box labeled Canadian Salmon. Albert Quay

Fowey Harbour Offices on Albert Quay, still in use. Little has changed since the original filming.
- Capture 26
- 28 Jun 2020

Fred runs up the quayside to the main street on his way to his fishmongers shop to hide the salmon in plain sight. Fred is running up Albert Quay towards Fore Street.

The same buildings remain.
- Capture 27
- 'Now' required

With Alice being unwilling to tell anyone where Albert has gone, an empty boat with no oars, she is happy to let the town’s folk think that he has drowned.
- Capture 28
- 28 Jun 2020

The Chief Constable (Frank Lawton) arrives at the Police Station to investigate the missing salmon and the whereabouts of Albert. Fowey Town Quay.

The building that was used as the Police Station was originally a Working Men’s Institute and is now a branch of the Royal British Legion.
- Capture 29
- 'Now' required

Alice leaves the Police Station with her daughter Rose (Ann Stephens) having told the police nothing.
- Capture 30
- 28 Jun 2020

As they walk towards the harbour wall they see Mrs Whiteway walking towards them with her dog. Town Quay, Fowey.

The building that Mrs Whiteway walked round from is now a Haverner's restaurant. The trusty white van's that so often manage to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- Capture 31
- 'Now' required

They give her a wide berth and discuss Albert’s whereabouts at the harbour wall.
- Capture 32
- 'Now' required

Having heard that Dimitri is a killer Albert rigs the ships compass and returns to the English coast, weighs anchor and rows Clifford and Dimitri ashore.
- Capture 33
- 'Now' required

Rose and Alice bed down for the night as the town bell ringers are no good without Albert. With thanks to Sally Erskine who identifies this as Hall Terrace, Bodinnick, Fowey.
- Capture 34
- 'Now' required

Rose and Alice go to visit the Coastguard (Kenneth Cope). They are about to approach and enter St Catherine's Point Light.
- Capture 35
- 'Now' required

- Capture 36
- 'Now' required

Mr Whiteway comes to “arrest” them first.
- Capture 37
- 28 Jun 2020

As Albert leaves the Police Station, Alice rushes to see him. Albert’s mother emerged from under the 'King of Prussia' public house.

The pub appears unchanged from the original filming. The area under the pub was once a butter market in the distant past but is now used as an additional seating area by the pub.
- Capture 38
- 28 Jun 2020

Reunited with his mother he wants to take her into the Police Station “to meet someone”. A branch of the Midland Bank in the background. This converted to HSBC but closed in 2011.

This building, which is on the corner of Webb Street and Fore Street is at present a Fitzroy fish restaurant/bar.
- Capture 39
- 'Now' required

Meanwhile Whiteway continues to argue with the Police over a salmon that they identify as a big bass! Fowey Town Quay.
