Vickers Factory Memories – John P Scott

Having identified the factory in Capture 2 John provided this additional knowledge and background for us.

The old main entrance was in Brooklands Road Weybridge. There was and still is an entrance in the New Haw side. There was an entrance cut through to the old Brooklands race track. I used to be taken there as a boy and went through the entrance many times.

This was filmed during the war and the entrance was also used later for several other films which seems rather odd when the Government was trying to keep the place secret. My mother was told not to run to the shelters which are still there and are used as a wine store among other things. When the terrible raid on the factory took place on September 4th 1940 my father was away in the RAF and told her to hide under the metal stairs near her. She did, but many had hidden under work benches, which were made of wood, 83 people died.  She took me to see the metal stairs which still had holes in them from the dropping glass. She could not wear tights as the glass that went into her legs, which were sticking out kept coming out all her life.
