Appointment, The (1981)

"Extract from police report number 727A. Strictly confidential, unpublished and unavailable. Subject Sandy Fremont (Auriol Goldingham). The last positive sighting of the child was on her way home from a school orchestra rehearsal." Michael B identifies this as Maidenhead Thicket at Pinkneys Green in Maidenhead, Berkshire adding that the buildings in the right background stand on Bakers Lane.

Michael provides this comparison of the location.

"This was on Tuesday 14th May at approximately 6.30 in the evening. At about this time her friend Janey Carr places her positively as entering the footpath through the area known as Crombie Woods. A then popular shortcut for several of the students living in Millard Heights." Michael B advises that this is the trail leading from Maidenhead Thicket.

Three years later, the titles roll over a view of the school where speculation about Sandy's disappearance has been endless and the truth as elusive as ever. Steve Randall advises that this is Haileybury Junior School, Clewer Manor on Imperial Road in Windsor, Berkshire which closed in 1997. The premises also appear in 'A Ghost of a Chance'.

Steve provides this comparison as evidence adding that the building has been converted into apartments and is now known as Meryton House.

Ian Fowler (Edward Woodward) signs the paperwork for a courtesy car whilst his Granada is having a service whilst telling mechanic Mark (John Judd) that he has been called away on the day of his daughter Joanne's concert. Neil Webster found evidence that the the Ford dealership in this scene was opposite 35 to 39 Horton Road in Datchet, Berkshire.

Mark suggests that his wife Clair prepares supper for Ian's wife Dianna and daughter Joanne after the recital. Neil Webster discovered that this is looking onto Horton Road in Datchet.

Appreciating the kind offer and advice from the father of three girls, the company director drives away to the film's Flint Hill Crescent in Thame. Facing numbers 35 and 37 Horton Road, Datchet identified by Neil Webster.

On her way home from school, Joanne Fowler (Samantha Weysom) approaches the metal railing erected to prevent pupils from using the footpath through Crombie Woods. Maidenhead Thicket at Pinkneys Green, Maidenhead located by Michael B.

Dianna Fowler (Jane Merrow) tells her husband that he shouldn't worry about being called to an enquiry on the day of their daughter's concert. IMDb suggests that the house is located in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire and Michael B confirms that it was number 14 South Park Crescent.

Ian watches as Dianna returns to the house. Michael B identifies the house at 14 South Park Crescent, Gerrards Cross, which was demolished in 2015.

After breaking the bad news to Joanne, Ian has a fitful night's sleep. Number 14 South Park Crescent in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire discovered by Michael B.

Ian's nightmare sees him driving through mountainous roads until a pack of dogs jump onto the car causing him to crash. Neil Rigby places this as taken from the A4086, looking towards the Pen Y Gwryd hotel in Gwynedd. (RL)

Three large dogs sniff around the house as Ian stirs inside. Michael B found the house on South Park Crescent in Gerrards Cross.

Morning brightens and Ian wakes with the prospect of a long drive. Number 14 South Park Crescent in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire identified by Michael B.

Taking care to stay inside the speed limit, Ian sets off to the enquiry.

Whilst travelling along a motorway, the sign for a service station indicates breakfast in 20 miles. Michael B explains that the motorway is the M3 is between junctions 1 and 2 near Shepperton in Surrey.

Making good time, Ian pulls off the motorway. The slip road of Fleet Services on the M3 between Junctions 4A and 5 in Hampshire identified by Michael B.

Sitting in his car, Ian looks at a row of telephone boxes outside the cafeteria and decides to call home. This is not Leigh Delamere service station as the building's footprint is wrong for the era and Neil Rigby provides evidence to strongly suggest that this could well be Heston services on the M4 which is confirmed by Ron Vale in his identification of a later capture.

After failing to connect the call, Ian's mind drifts back to his nightmare as he eats breakfast.

Glad I wasn't dreaming whilst driving. NW

Through the cafeteria window, Ian scans parked vehicles as the noise of workmen digging and drilling permeates the glass. Despite the earlier identification of the slip road, that gasometer in the right background would not be visible from Leigh Delamere services. Ron Vale provides the solution and tells us that this is Heston Services in Greater London, possibly the eastbound car park. The giveaway being the the gasometer at Southall gas works. in the right distance.

In the garage, Mark starts work on Ian's car as the journey to the enquiry continues. Stephen Clapp identifies this as the roundabout at the junction of the A41 and A4251 London Road to the south-east of Tring in Hertfordshire.

Taking time to stretch his legs, Ian pulls over into a lay-by gets and out out of the car. The slip-road for Cow Lane on the A4251 London Road around 250m east of the roundabout at the A41 junction, located by Stephen Clapp.

Mark makes his way back to his friend's white Granada and is killed when Ian's attempts to start the loaned Granada somehow translated to his own car.

The Postman walks back from the Fowler's front door. Michael B locates the property as number 14 South Park Crescent, Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire.

Ian successfully calls Dianna as an articulated lorry appears to head straight for the telephone box. Neil Webster identifies Pinkneys Drive in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

Indicating to turn, the lorry pulls into a petrol station. Malcolm Tinnelly locates this as on the A413 between Great Missenden and Little Missenden in Buckinghamshire where the background garage has since been replaced by a van sales and car wash business while the neighbouring Royal Oak public house became the Deep Mill Diner before closing in 2019.

Antony Blair revisited the location.

A few moments later, Ian passes the petrol station. Found by Malcolm Tinnelly, this is looking in the opposite direction from the previous capture on the A413 towards Great Missenden. Malcolm adds that, just out of view in the left distance is Deep Mill Lane where about 100 yards along the lane stands Grange Farm which appears as the home of Barnes Wallis in 'The Dam Busters'.

Having checked his suit hanging in the back of the car and his briefcase on the rear seat, Ian realises that he has lost his wristwatch. Neil Webster found the A4086, heading north-east towards Capel Curig.

On a Sunday morning, it was mainly walkers I was passing, no businessmen. NW

Realisation hits . . . the watch was taken off in the phone box. In the vicinity of number 44 Pinkneys Drive, Maidenhead located by Neil Webster who adds that the director's commentary explains that the K8 telephone box was a prop.

Ian turns the car around and heads back to recover the present from his daughter. This is the Pen Y Gwryd hotel, Nant Gwynant Neil says. (RL)

When the brakes of the Granada fail, Ian struggles to steer the speeding car before almost colliding with the articulated lorry as it climbs the mountain. Again the A4086, as seen earlier, at Pen-y-Pas, but in the opposite direction says Neil. (RL)

At least it wasn't a sinister lorry. NW

As he fights to keep control, Ian's car hits the crash barrier on the opposite side of the road. Once again says Neil, the same A4086 at Pen-y-Pas in Snowdonia, Gwynedd. (RL)
