Moord in Extase

As the credits start to roll we see detective Juriaan De Cock (Joop Doderer) arriving close to the ferry in Amsterdam North. In the background can be seen the Havengebouw that also appears in 'Modesty Blaise'.

Nowadays this location in Amsterdam North is called Ijplein and it’s very close to the ferry. It seems that the original building, that was under construction is still under construction!!!!!

As De Cock raises his head, looks over the River Ij he sees the Central Train Station and on the left the Basilica of the Holy Nicolaas Church.

As the years pass there has recently been an extra bus terminal constructed at the back side of the Central Station. It can be seen on the right of the photo.

The money transport van is driving from Central Station over Damrak into the inner center.

A photo of one the most crowded streets of Amsterdam; Damrak and there is nobody to be seen on this photo. An eerie side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The van makes a left turn and drives through the Papenbrugsteeg into the the Warmoestraat. On the right the warehouse Bijenkorf also seen in 'Puppet On A Chain'.

Another eerie photo in a totally deserted city. This photo was taken at the peak of the Corona outbreak. Great to make these exact photos but I hope it will never be like this again….

Meanwhile we see policemen leaving the most notorious police station of The Netherlands, Bureau Warmoestraat (Warmoestraat 44,46,48,50). This police station is also the police station where the author of the book, Appie Baantjer, used to work as a policeman. The station closed in 2000.

Try to park your motorcycle in front of the station when it was still a police station. Either the thieves or the police would have taken it.

The first team of the robbers in their vehicle comes from Minervalaan and enters the Gerrit van der Veenstraat in Amsterdam South. Gerrit van der Veen was a resistance fighter who did set fire to the city registration in WWII.

Not much changed over the years. Except the increase of bikes in this area.

The second team of robbers drive through the Gerrit van der Veenstraat and heading to the intersection with the Beethovenstraat to meet with the others.

Not much changed the last 35 years. The trees didn’t even grow.

The thieves are meeting each other at the intersection of the Gerrit van der Veenstraat en Beethovenstraat.

The French wines have been changed into American donuts by the years.

The pursuit of the money transport starts at the canals of Amsterdam. Looking at the Reguliersgracht from the intersection Reguliersgracht/Prinsengracht.

Beautiful location in the center of Amsterdam. Hardly changed over the years.

Not aware they are been followed by the robbers. Almost the same location as Capture 10, again, looking at the Prinsengracht from the intersection Reguliersgracht/Prinsengracht.

Following the money van the robbers enter the Weesperstraat and this shot is taken at the intersection with the Nieuwe Prinsengracht. The buildings on the left have been demolished or reconstructed.

As can be seen the building has been completely renovated. The original buildings were demolished in the mid 70’s because of the subway system of Amsterdam. The Wibautstraat, from where this photo has been taken is known as the highway of Amsterdam.

At the last moment the driver of the van and his companion are ordered to take the tunnel route. That route does not exist now but did used to go under the Mr. Visserplein. This capture shows the north side into the Weesperstraat.

Again empty streets because of Covid-19. When the film was shot the building on the left was used as a student house for the University of Amsterdam. Looking straight into the Wibautstraat and no approaching 'money wagon'.

The robbers follow close behind. This is on the Jonas Daniel Meijerplein and the underground passage route that is now closed. An absolute failure project of the late 70’s.

As can be seen in this 'nowadays' photo, the underground passage is no longer there but a small part has been retained as a playground for children. On the left of this photo can be seen the Hortus Botanicus, the botanic gardens of Amsterdam.

The robbery takes place as planned.

With the robbery completed and one of the van drivers dead the robbers exit Mr. Visserplein at the Valkenburgstraat. In front of us we see police station Ijtunnel that is still a police station and on the right the temporary flea market Waterlooplein. Nowadays a building complex.

An unrecognizable changed. On the right where the temporary flea market Waterlooplein used to be, is now completely full of apartments. One can't even see the police station, bureau Ijtunnel, at the end no more!

Vledder and De Cock are on Amstel to do their detective work and find those responsible. On the right you can see the entrance of the skinny bridge. In 'Puppet On A Chain' and 'Diamonds Are Forever' this bridge is also in the movie.

The good thing, is that the vehicles aren’t there any more, the bad thing, is that these horrible grey garbage deposit units are.

Vledder (Ron Brandsteder) and De Cock arrive at Amstel 71 to start their investigation.

Vledder starts to chase a possible suspect from Amstel 71.

Not much changed on this spot. Still looks like how it was in 1984. Maybe Vledder could have 'borrowed' these days.

De Cock talks to the mailman in his investigation to find the robbers of the stolen money. 10 and 8 Hoogte Kadijk looking towards Schippersgracht.

Much more green and the postman has a completely different look nowadays.

During the night Vledder and De Cock chase the suspect Peter Shot, an American gangster. Unknown location.

Vledder and De Cock visit another possible suspect, Walter van Duin (Toon Agterberg) at the Entrepotdok, Amsterdam. The Entrepotdok can also be seen in 'Puppet on A Chain'.

Here we see the Entrepotdoks as also seen in the movie 'Puppet on a Chain' but this part of the doks is completely the other side as in 'Puppet on a Chain'. Two houses have been torn down to make a passage for pedestrians and cars.

They return to the headquarters of the Amsterdam police at the Elandsgracht 117.

The headquarter of the Amsterdam police is much more protected these days.

Kees Bleeker (Hero Muller), one of the money transport car drivers, is brought to a Wilhelmina Gasthuis hospital, located at the Eerste Helmerstraat, Amsterdam West .

Vleddder takes over the patient

The murderer waits in front of the hospital with the intention to shoot the driver who can identify him.

The entrance of the old hospital looks in 2020 much nicer and the hospital is no longer an hospital. Now, converted into apartments. The photo (and camera) were in a street called: Helmersplantsoen in Amsterdam Old West.

Walter van Duin lives in a Dutch windmill. From all the windmills in the Netherlands Steve Randall has managed to establish 'van Duin's' home, it turns out to be 'De Onrust', 1399 Muiderberg. A prostitute in the red light district goes to the same pub where De Cock can be found on a daily basis. Unknown location.

Vledder and De Cock are rushing to a possible murders location. Same location as Capture 20

Great thing is that after more than 35 years Koffiehuis ‘t Keldertje (Coffeeshop The Basement) is still there!!! Notice this is NOT the type of coffeeshop where Amsterdam is famous for with their hallucinating plants and so on, but this is an old coffee house that was there for the poor people where they could meet each other and drink a cup of coffee. The Spanish restaurant didn’t make it and became one of the couple of hundred hipster bagel shops.

Leaving Bureau Warmoestraat they head off to their final suspect murderer, Walter van Duin. Shot has been taken from a still existing location of the police at the Oudebrugsteeg. In the background we see Damrak.

It was, it is, and it will be a docking place of the canal boats of Amsterdam. We see the Damrak as we see from a different angle earlier.

The camera pans as they drive off. In the background there is the Central Train Station. A similar view appears in 'The Inspector'.

I thought this place where the camera stood was still a parking spot for the local police but it turns out it is now in the hands of a coffeeshop and it is a terrace next to the water.

De Cock is now certain that Walter can Duin is their man, so with Vledder they leave bureau Warmoestraat to make the arrest. Same location as Capture 6.

We are at the location of Walter van Duin again and this is on the country side. Found by Steve to be near the 'De Onrust' windmill at 1399 Muiderberg, Netherlands.

A Google Earth view reveals that the buildings have been replaced.
