Emergency Call (aka The Hundred Hour Hunt)

Through the start and credits the urgency is set by an ambulance travelling along the Strand, London with its bell ringing. Outside circa No 442.

The ambulance pulls into the grounds of an 'hospital' where we learn that a little girl has only hours to live without three pints of a very rare blood group. The background is not Charing Cross Hospital and, whilst there are similarities to Hammersmith Hospital, with ashlar quoins, the size and approach does not appear to be this either. Neither an ambulance bell nor a telephone bell that rang for Dave W, but the distinctive windows and quoins of the Carphone Warehouse, Kensington High Street and the entrance to Kensington Church Court.

Dave provides this Google Earth View to support his find of the ambulance well off route.

The police in Liverpool, call on the first potential donor, George Robinson (Earl Cameron), a seaman who is about to sail but is nevertheless totally opposed to helping. The street name is no help.

The involvement of Scotland Yard naturally requires the customary shot prior to cutting to the offices where Dr Carter (Anthony Steel) is explaining to Inspector Lane (Jack Warner) about his previous experience related to this rare blood group. Scotland Yard from the Embankment, London SW1

Having relayed the story they drive to the ‘lodgings’ where the events occurred….only to find it was bombed. Dave W pounded the streets of East London and found Hoxton Street, London N1 at the junction with Homefield Street, facing south, with the car, in consequence, travelling north.

Another potential donor is boxer Tim Mahoney (Freddie Mills former L. Heavyweight Champion of the World) who has just failed to throw his fight. The police arrive to take Mahoney to the hospital just in time before he ‘pays the price’. Empress Hall, Lillie Road, London SW6. Now re-developed.

Dr Carter and Insp. Lane travel to visit Dr Carter’s ‘old’ landlady Mrs Cornelius (Thora Hird) who now runs a fish and chip shop. Christopher Matheson in a Britmovie Forum identified this as Old Street facing east, with the trolleybus approaching the junction at City Road. Left is the old bank note printing plant while the two men at right are approaching the corner of Mallow Street.

Paul Lincoln found a significantly changed location, but at least Mallow Street provided a focal point. (RL)

They arrive at the 'chippy' to see Mrs Cornelius. Hedley England identified this as No 35 Bridge Street, Walton on Thames, opposite 'The Bear' pub.

Hedley England sent this in, the shops have recently been rebuilt, to original design, and No 35 was shut, so I could not get a shot through the window.

They leave having learned little, but at least something. Anne advises that being so near the studio's the "stars" used to frequent the "chippy" and the kids took their autograph books there when they went.

George’s boat is about to call into London. Somewhere along the working Thames, lacking features to identify where.

Dr Carter and Inspector Lane call on George to plead with him. The ship is North Star and Anthony Spencer discovered that it was built in 1948 by A/B Götaverken at Gothenburg, Sweden. The ship was withdrawn after a fire in 1970 and broken up at Santander, Spain the following year.

The third potential donor is Jackson (Geoffrey Hibbert) now known as Freeman running a shop on the South Coast. But he was involved in Dr Carter’s ‘previous experience’, a murder. Hedley England says; Shepperton. This shop is at the entrance to Church Square, off Chertsey Road in Shepperton. The location is also seen in 'The Navy Lark', 'The Set Up', 'The 3 Worlds of Gulliver', 'Trent's Last Case', 'Mysterious Island', 'Glad Tidings' and 'Bond Of Fear'.

..and Hedley England took the picture. This shop is still unchanged.

Having ‘made a run for it’ Jackson makes his way to see Brett Martin (Sydney Tafler) who he ‘did the job with’ to ask him to get him out of the country.

Carter and Lane call on Brett but he has gone to the wharf and Jackson makes a run for it once again. Another piece of sterling work from Ray Glenister, placing this as Lower Mall, London W6 looking west from the boat house on the corner with Mall Road along to number 20. The boat house, Nos: 16 and 17 was the home of the 'West End Amateur Rowing Association'. Boarded up in this capture, this corner plot was re-developed into flats that now stand.

Now looking east along Lower Mall with the boarded up Westcott Cottage left, Ray finds Jackson by the yard gate entrance of number 21.

And into a yard running towards the river side. Dave W specifically identifies this as Chancellors Wharf, Chancellors Road and goes the extra mile, identifying both the Harrods Depository building and the roof line of Castleton Mansions in the background on the opposite side of the River.

Soon to be followed by Carter and Lucas. The tank in the background, also seen in ‘Tiger By The Tail’, was part of the Hammersmith Distillery on Chancellors Road, London W6.

Jackson is shot by Brett but he gives his blood to save the little girls life. It depends on the outcome of Capture 3 but it may be part of the studio complex.
