Kate Brady narrates "I love the city. I feel inside the life of it because there is always some face, some noise to interest me. It must be because I grew up in the country. A farm we had. And the house was in the middle of a field." Pat Cleary found the building which is located at Ballinastoe Crossroads between the Great Sugar Loaf Mountain and Roundwood in County Wicklow adding that in the latter half of the 19th century it was a hotel of repute.

Still standing, Pat advises that the building is now the road frontage of the Clubhouse at Djouce Golf Club.

"Trees and wind and dogs barking was the noises I heard most . . . except for Baba laughing. She's my friend. We went to a convent school together . . . " This is Tinakilly House to the east of Rathnew in County Wicklow.

". . . and now we're here in Dublin lodging with Joanna. Our lives vary. Some nights we just lie in our beds and think because we're having a drink that we're getting fast. We go out of course, too. That's what Baba calls real living." Returning from work, Kate Brady (Rita Tushingham) crosses the road outside the house where she shares a room with her friend. Inside the house, Kate and Baba begin to get ready for an evening at the cinema. The steps to numbers 49 and 51 Percy Place. This terrace also appears in 'Murder in Eden'.

Dressed up for their night out, Baba Brennan (Lynn Redgrave) and Kate meet Bertie Counihan (Patrick Laffan) and his Mate (Mike Murphy) outside the house. The background houses stand on Percy Place, just to the south of Huband Bridge, and can also be seen in 'Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx'.

John Larkin took a similar view of the properties.

With Baba sitting next to him along with Kate and his Mate in the back of the Fordson van, Bertie drives away. On Sunday evening, a number 15 bus brings Baba and Kate into the city. Harcourt Street, Dublin 2 with Harcourt Street station on the east side of the road to the left. The terminus closed in 1958.

Alighting from the bus, Baba warns her friend about accepting cigarettes off strangers as she relates a story of two girls being dragged off to Phoenix Park. Harcourt Street with buildings on Harcourt Road in the right distance.

Baba joins Kate after confession telling her that she'd rather risk Hell than the penance just given by the Priest. This is inside the Church of Notre Dame de France on Leicester Place in London WC2 identified by Paul Joslin.

Walking across O'Connell Bridge, the two friends turn when called to by Bertie. Located by John Larkin, this is O'Connell Bridge crossing the River Liffey with O'Mara's bar at the corner of Bachelor's Walk and Bachelor's Way in the background.

Bertie tells the pair to get into the van before he's arrested while looking back at the growing queue of traffic. Looking north along O'Connell Street in Dublin 1 from O'Connell Bridge. The Fordson passes through an archway to enter the yard at a remote country house. Tinakilly Upper, adjacent to Tinakilly House near Rathnew in County Wicklow.

While Bertie takes the dog into the house, Baba runs towards a secluded corner of the yard to "water the grass". The yard of the since demolished Tinakelly Upper.

Having bumped into Eugene at Green's bookshop, the two girls suggest that he joins them for tea. The corner of Clare Street and Merrion Square West, looking in a south-easterly direction, located John Larkin.

After asking the well travelled author to meet her for tea again, Kate and Eugene talk about their lives as they walk along the Liffey. Usher's Island with St. Paul's church and the Four Courts beyond Queen's Bridge across the Liffey to the top right.

Following a drink in Nearys bar, the two make their way onto the Great South Wall "A girl stood before him in midstream . . . alone and still, gazing out to sea." With the look of a pick up back projection, this is the Great South Wall of Dublin Harbour with the chimneys of Pigeon House generating station in the centre distance.

Sunday morning bells call the faithful to church as Kate leaves home after Eugene arranges to collect her. Facing Huband Bridge over the Grand Canal and the Pepper Canister Church from the steps numbers 49 and 51 Percy Place. The area has has appeared in many films and television series' over all the years and Pat Cleary adds that the final twelve years of his working life were spent in a new office block on Haddington Road just around the corner from Percy Place where it was not unusual to see location service vehicles parked.

The sun wasn't being kind to Pat as he took this comparison.

Recalling shooting scenes for one of his own amateur films in 1989, Pat captured the location while reminiscing that he had only one medium size van that carried cast, crew, equipment, props as well as tea and sandwiches . . . them were the days.

During another of the regular weekend visits to Eugene's house, Kate looks out of her bedroom window to see housekeeper Josie Hannigan (Marie Kean) entering the yard. Looking out onto the entrance of the yard at Tinakelly Upper, County Wicklow.

Kate;s uncle Andy Devlin (Joe Lynch) and her father James Brady (Arthur O'Sullivan) burst into the grocery shop after learning about her affair. Through the doorway stands the Obelisk Fountain on James Street.

Travelling by train, Mr. Brady takes his daughter back home.

At the family farm, Kate is lectured by her Aunt.

Kate sits on a swing near the house before a Priest summoned by her father arrives to speak with her about sin.

Escaping from the dreary farm, Kate arrives at the station and asks the Ticket Collector (David Kelly) for a ticket to Dublin. The script suggests that the station is somewhere between Limerick Colbert and either Limerick Junction or Ballybrophy stations.

On the platform, Kate waits two hours in the rain for the train to the junction.

Arriving off the midnight train from Cork, Kate walks home early next morning. Looking across Huband Bridge onto Percy Place in Dublin 4.

Kate returns to Eugene's house after Baba tells him that he's returned from London.

Taking her belongings from the boot of the car, Kate continues running towards her lodgings. Located by John Larkin, this is looking eastwards along Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 from a position near the junction with Dawson Street with the classically styled Masonic Hall in the centre distance and Leinster House at the far end of the road.

On Custom House Quay, a moored ferry waits as passengers embark for Liverpool.

Kate and Baba arrive to catch the ferry accompanied by Bertie and Joanna (Lislott Goettinger). Alan Bourke confirms that the dome is that of the Customs House on Customs House Quay which can also be spotted in 'The Big Gamble', 'Tim Driscoll's Donkey', 'Taffin', ‘The Quare Fellow’, ‘Flight of the Doves’ and ‘Shake Hands with the Devil’.

The ferry sets sail for England.

"He wrote to me in London saying what a nice girl I was and what a pity that he hadn't been younger or I hadn't been more mature. I haven't heard now for months, so I expect he's gone back to his wife. Once or twice, I've seen someone who looks like him and I run to them the way I'd run to kiss him if he appeared now."
