Ringer, The

"It was in Cairo that I first met Arthur Milton. Only knew him a couple of days and we got married." The Mosque of Muhammad Ali, El-Khalifa in the Al Abageyah district of Cairo.

Cora Ann Milton continues her narration . . . "It was all a bit of a rush. You see the police were after us so we spent our honeymoon on the run." Dave W fancied a bit of warmth, so went to Egypt, and found himself looking north east across Talaat Harb Square in 'downtown' Cairo. The statue in the middle of the capture is that of the Egyptian economist Talaat Harb who founded the Bank of Egypt. (RL) The square also appears in 2006's 'The Yacoubian Building'.

This comparison really doesn't give any indication as to how dangerous it is to stand in the middle of an Egyptian road with your back to the traffic. (PW)

"Paris, Cape Town, Singapore . . . " Looking over the River Seine in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the 7th arrondissement beyond Pont d'Iéna.

"Hong Kong. It really wasn't much fun. It seems the police wanted Arthur everywhere." Just saying "Hong Kong" doesn't make it Hong Kong, Dave W tells us that this is in fact Singapore, in fact Tan Quee Lan Street off North Bridge Road. Still standing. He provides a 'now' to support, unfortunately the 'now' is from 1907. (RL)

Not being able to wander his local streets on New Years Eve Dave decided to visit those of Singapore courtesy of Google Earth to provide us with a much more current comparative shot of the location that has fortunately stood the test of time, particularly so in Singapore. (RL)

"We hid quite successfully in Australia for a while. Almost got to know the neighbours." Sydney Harbour Bridge in Sydney, New South Wales with Olympic Drive in the foreground.

GWWD captured the scene now.

"Until one night, Arthur committed suicide. At least that's what the police thought." Queen Street in Brisbane, Queensland.

"'Til they found out he was in London. My dear husband had quite calmly walked out on me." Looking past the Tower of London towards Tower Bridge from a rooftop at the corner of Trinity Square and Byward Street in EC3.

"He thought he could do a certain job in London better on his own. Of all the stupid things to do! In London, Arthur was wanted more than anywhere." The Royal Courts of Justice on Strand WC2.

"The police picked up any crooks turning out of prison who might be able to help them find The Ringer, that's what they called Arthur." An unmarked police car approaches the prison where Sam Hackett is about to be released. Looking along Heathfield Avenue towards the entrance of Wandsworth Prison in SW18. The popular location features in many films including 'The Birthday Present', ‘Dead Man's Chest’, ‘Saloon Bar’, ‘Calculated Risk’, ‘The Spaniard's Curse’, 'The Stable Door', 'The Price of Silence', ‘Out of the Fog’, ‘Information Received’, ‘The Verdict’ and ‘Poor Cow’.

Two Detectives (Peter Burton and Russell Waters) approach Sam Hackett (William Hartnell) as he steps through a door in the prison gates. The main gate to Wandsworth Prison on Heathfield Road in Wandsworth.

The door has been replaced but the moulding is intact. SJ

Hoping to tip off solicitor Maurice Meister about The Ringer being in London, Sam arrives at his house to be confronted by the Gardener (John Stuart).

Working his way into Meister’s employment, Sam tells the Gardener to get bars for the windows.

Outside the gates to Meister’s mansion, Cora Ann Milton (Greta Gynt) watches from her car. Ray and Ron Glenister have ascertained that this is Christ Church Gate, Jamaica Road, Southwark, London SE16 looking across to Cathay Street. (RL)

Seeing all she needs to, the Ringer’s wife drives away. Following on from the above capture Ron and Ray this as Jamaica Road, Southwark, looking west with the corner of Prospect Street in the foreground. (RL)

The Mercedes-Benz Roadster negotiates back streets. This is the same street that will be seen in a moment depicting the opposite side of the road to the police station. Persistence and detail provided Dave W with Dragoon Road looking over to Grove Street, London SE8. (RL)

The junction remains, although Dragoon Road has shifted slightly, and all the original buildings are gone. (SR)

Another corner is taken. The corner in particular Ray and Ron tell us is into St. Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, London SE16 looking at No 12a to the left of the background terrace. All now absorbed into the Brunel Road/Rotherhithe Tunnel roundabout. (RL)

Outside a police station, Cora Ann brings the car to a stand. Rotherhithe Police Station at the corner of Paradise Street and Cathay Street in SE16. The building also features in 'Behemoth the Sea Monster' and 'The Boy and the Bridge'.

The American citizen looks over at the building before going inside to advise the Desk Sergeant that she needs to register a change of address. As found by Dave W, helped by the reflection of the large gate posts reflected in the shop window. Dragoon Road at the junction with Grove Street, London SE 8 and the reflected entrance to the Cattle Market. (RL)

To get rid of his secretary Lisa’s fiancé John Lemley, Meister sends him on an errand to collect papers from his central London office. Piccadilly Circus in W1.

John Lemley (Denholm Elliot) is cornered by Inspector Peters (Robert Raglan) and his Men on the roof of the solicitor’s office. A studio set depicting a rooftop above Piccadilly Circus.

Also in the studio, as he makes of with the silver that he sold to Meister some years before, Sam Hackett plays innocent when a Constable calls to him in the street.

Escaping with his wife after being unmasked, The Ringer drives away in a stolen Wolseley police car. Dave also provides us with this location, Redriff Road, London SE16 facing north-east near what is now Tawny Way with a ship unloading in both this capture and 'Britain from Above' image EAW029490.
