Another Shore

With the credits over, a darkened view of the River Liffey appears as dawn breaks. This appears to be Essex Quay in Dublin 2 with Grattan Bridge crossing the Liffey in the background.

As the light grows, the camera finds a clearer view of Dublin's river. Looking east along the Liffey with the gasometer that appears in many other productions on the southern bank. This section of the river also appears in 'Ulysses', ‘Rooney’, 'Tim Driscoll's Donkey', ‘The Big Gamble’, 'The Quare Fellow' and 'Meet Simon Cherry'.

Taking this comparison, Pat Cleary explains that the foreground Talbot Memorial Bridge was opened in 1978 while, in the distance, the Tall Ship is a replica of the Jeanie Johnston that carried thousands of Irish emigrants to North America during the Great Famine in the 19th century. A very popular tourist attraction.

Tony Hanna returned to the location a little later in the day.

Leaving their lodgings as the Milkman calls, Clerks make their way to their offices. The corner of Merchant’s Quay and O'Donovan Rossa Bridge with the Four Courts across the Liffey. Other views of the iconic building can be seen in many other films including ‘The Quare Fellow’, 'Shake Hands With the Devil', ‘Rooney’, ‘Tim Driscoll's Donkey’, 'The General', ‘Girl with Green Eyes’ and ‘Johnny Nobody’.

Tony Hanna found a light distraction at the same corner.

Eighteen months after he left work, Gulliver Sheils (Robert Beatty) leaves the house. Arran Quay in Dublin 7. The background property has since been demolished and Ocean House now stands on the site.

Sitting down with a small bottle of whiskey at his side, Gulliver writes in his diary that this is the 459th day that he has sat hoping for a good Samaritan to happen by and provide the 200 guineas he needs to move to the South Pacific island of Rarotonga. St. Stephen’s Green Park with the statue of Earl Eglinton to the top left, which stood until 1958.

Falling asleep on the bench, Gulliver recalls a Sunday at the beach where he dreams that he's in the South Seas. The north beach at Greystones in County Wicklow with Bray Head in the distance.

Pat Cleary took this view looking north showing that "There has been massive development of the Greystones Harbour and North Beach area. This is the new marina contained within the much larger new harbour. In the background is Bray Head but Howth, seen in the far right background of the capture, is obscured."

Jennifer Stockley brings him to his senses after he wanders into the sea with an imaginary spear in his hand. With land reclaimed and demolition of older buildings, the north beach at Greystones has changed a great deal and a new marina along with residential development now occupies what was once sand and shingle.

In the background, Pat tells us, is the Small Sugar Loaf Mountain while the foreground shows further evidence of the development with more to come!

Turning from Jennifer, Gulliver runs to the station when he hears his train approaching. The train in the background is heading south towards Greystones station.

Due to land reclamation over the years and the recent developments Pat expected a hard time finding a matching view but the light blue house to the left was the clue. The screen capture was taken on the old beach from a lower angle with the Small Sugar Loaf Mountain mostly hidden by the steam locomotive's smoke. The railway line still runs behind the house.

The wealthy Alastair McNeil (Stanley Holloway) heads for the park where he settles down beside Gulliver. To the left stands the north-eastern gate to St. Stephen’s Green Park with the Shelbourne Hotel filling the background. Pat Cleary returned to the location where the pillars and gates at this entrance to St. Stephen's Green have been long since been removed.

Gulliver follows McNeil to a bar where the gent has paid for whiskey with the coin. The Irish House at the corner of Winetavern Street and Wood Quay in Dublin 8. The long demolished bar was also seen in ‘The Big Gamble’ and 'Ulysses'.

Reading in the newspapers that the corner of Grafton Street and College Green is a common place for vehicles to crash, Gulliver makes his way to the busy junction where a Garda is on duty. College Green, Dublin 2 with the Bank of Ireland in the right background.

In the hope of gaining payment as a accident witness, Gulliver doesn't have to wait long to see a collision. College Green also features in ‘Hidden Agenda’ and 'Rooney'.

Having recognised Jennifer from the beach as one of the motorists, Gulliver turns away to continue waiting until evening begins to draw in when more scenes of the city are seen. With the junction quiet and rain beginning to fall, Gulliver makes his way home after an unsuccessful day.

Ever hopeful, Gulliver returns to College Green the next day as Jennifer appears in the District Court. This is Green Street Courthouse on Green Street, Dublin 7.

To the annoyance of Traders, Gulliver takes up his position on the steps of the bank for several weeks. College Green with the Bank of Ireland to the left, College Street to the centre and Parliament House on the right.

Clocking up an enormous fare, the cab takes Gulliver to Jennifer's house after she asks him to see her home.

Running from Jennifer's house after dinner, Gulliver returns to College Green the next morning. Outside Parliament House at the northern end of Grafton Street with the Provost’s House to the top right.

Pat Cleary explains that private car traffic has finally been excluded from this overly congested junction. The now tree-encircled Henry Grattan Monument was erected in 1876.

Following several drinks with McNeil, Gulliver heads home after the two agree to travel to Tahiti together. Looking along Dame Street and a since replaced building at the corner of Foster Place.

Fighting for an angle, and with the sun, Tony captures the tower of St. Audoen's which, he adds, most Dubliners mispronounce.

After obtaining their passports and gathering the required paraphernalia for the trip, Gulliver and McNeil make their way to the port. Inns Quay, outside the Four Courts.

Despite apparently hiding in the bushes, Tony Hanna matches the view.
