Inspector, The (aka Lisa)

In 1946 Holland, Lisa Held (Dolores Hart), a survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, has fallen prey to ex-Nazi Thorens (Marius Goring), who has promised to smuggle her into Palestine. In reality, Thorens plans to send her to South America for sex work. Unknown to them both, they are being trailed by Dutch Police Inspectors Peter Jongman (Stephen Boyd) and Sergeant Wolters (Donald Pleasence). Jongman carries the guilt of not having saved his Jewish fiancée, Rachel, from death at the hands of the Nazis. Jongman follows them to London, Here Lisa arrives by train at the Dutch railway station. Hoek van Holland station in Rotterdam, South Holland.

Inspector Jongman follows the couple to England on a boat. They cannot arrest Thorens because Lisa is over 21 years of age. Train station Hoek van Holland.

The next day they arrive in London. Westminster as seen from the Lambeth Palace Road, London.

Jongmans goes to Scotland Yard and informs them that he and Wolters believe that Thorens is an ex Nazi who exploits former concentration camp women. Scotland Yard can’t do a thing. Jongmans decides to pay Thorens a little visit. Southwark Bridge and Cannon Street Station as seen from Bankside, London SE1. The buildings immediately behind the taxi are 51 and 52 Bankside, known as 'Provost's Lodging', dating back to at least 1712. Needless to say, Grade ll listed. To their right is number 49 that was the Cardinal Cap public house alluded to in Shakespeare's play Henry Vl part ll.

During their encounter, Jongman strikes Thorens, who accidentally falls on to one of the imitation SS daggers he sells, and dies. Jongman thinks Thorens, who was moving when he left, had only been knocked down and leaves. Jongman meets Lisa outside and invites her to come with him to Holland so he can help her to get to Palestine. St. Paul's Cathedral as seen from Bankside.

The next day they are back in Amsterdam and, of course, a barrel organ can be heard while walking the streets. Intersection Keizersgracht and Brouwersgracht in Amsterdam.

Frank just loves the quiet Sunday mornings walking in Amsterdam. The pedestrian bridge on the left that can be seen in the screen capture has been replaced by a bridge that is suitable for cars.

Peter Jongman brings Lisa to the house where he, his mother (Jean Anderson) and his sister (Jane Jordan) live. Keizersgracht 1,3 and 5, Amsterdam.

Keizersgracht 1 (on the corner) is not that old as expected. Built in 1898 and the architect was J. Bakker.

After an argument with Peter’s mother Lisa takes off and leaves the house. Keizersgracht 5, Amsterdam.

Keizersgracht 5 is much older. Built in 1720 and the architect is unknown. Little has changed here since decades.

Peter Jongman’s mother apologises herself to her son and asks Peter to bring Lisa back. Peter Jongman runs outside after Lisa. Pastoorsbrug and Keizersgracht as shot from the opposite side of the Keizersgracht, Amsterdam.

The new bridge is suitable for heavy traffic. Frank wishes that the barrel organ could be seen and heard more often in the city. The same bridge can be seen in 'Modesty Blaise'.

Boats, boats and more boats . . .

Lisa and Peter go to the location where Peter works; The police station. Amstel 7 looking in the direction of the Munttoren at the Rokin, Amsterdam. Almost the same shot, but a little closer, can be seen in the movie 'Operation Amsterdam'.

Peter entering the police station. Lisa is a little nervous with all these uniforms around her and she stays outside. Peter is confronted by his superior about Thorens’ death. Jongman says he struck Thorens but did not kill him; he secretly suspects Lisa killed Thorens. Peter already suspects that he will get followed and he whispers to Lisa, once outside, to meet him at the barge exchange of the Damrak in half an hour. Sergeant Wolters is ordered to follow him. Amstel 7, Amsterdam. The building has now gone but a glimpse of how this location looked before it was demolished can be seen in 'Modesty Blaise' Capture 22 that was at the rear.

Unfortunately all the buildings in this block of houses were demolished in the late 70s and early 80s and now on that same place you can find one of the ugliest buildings of Amsterdam: The town hall called De Stopera. Such a shame.

Peter Jongman enters the barge exchange. He tells the chief there that he has to bring a girl over the border, unofficially. Jongman finds work for them on a barge owned by Captain Brandt (Leo McKern) going to Paris. They will leave in one hour close to the ferry. Oudebrugsteeg in the direction of Central Station. Almost the same shot seen in the movie 'Moord in Extrase'.

Unfortunately not the exact same angle as the original shot but Frank found the doors closed. In the background, the Central Station of Amsterdam can be seen.

Lisa was waiting outside and once Peter walks outside he whispers to her to meet at the flower store across the street. Here he tells her to meet at the barge ‘Hendrika’ in one hour. Oudebrugsteeg 9, Amsterdam

Can somebody explain to Frank who’s brilliant idea it was to paint all the door fittings in this fluorescent blue colour????

New ferries but smaller. No cars allowed on the new ones. The three factory pipes in the middle of the screen capture were demolished in 2020. Another landmark gone.

Did all the boats go to the inner city of Amsterdam?

Peter arrives at the location where the barge is. He and Lisa rush to the right boat and they leave in a hurry. Pontsteiger looking at the Graansilo Korthals Altes, Silodam 100, Amsterdam

Much has changed here in the last 60 years. The only recognisable building is the Graansilo Korthals Altes (silo). That was a storage site for grain and provided space for 17,000 tons of grain. If the city were to be besieged in times of war, then the people of Amsterdam would at any rate be assured of having nine months worth of bread. The Stenen Silo stands on a dam in the River IJ, enabling easy unloading of grain from ships. The silo has since been converted into private apartments.

They pass a bridge while leaving Amsterdam. Walter Suskindbrug at the intersection Amstel and Nieuwe Herengracht, Amsterdam

Now don’t get fooled. This bridge is built between 1969 and 1972 in the old style. The first bridge was built in 1662 on this location. In 1922 a metal bridge was built here (see screen capture) but the foundations were rotten so they made this one in the late 60 early 70s.

Frank thinks that the ‘new’ bridge doesn’t look that bad after all….

On their way to Paris they pass some typical Dutch locations. Location unknown.

When the evening falls it is time to moor the boat and to go ashore. Hoge brug at the Veermanskade, Hoorn

Now this was easy to identify for Frank. This is only ten kilometres from his house and while watching the film he recognised it instantly.

In the film they call this town Molendorp (Windmill Town). In reality it is filmed in Hoorn, Noord Holland. They moor the boat and jump on the dock. Oude Doelenkade, Hoorn

Back then warehouses, now restaurants and bars.

They find out that Sergeant Wolters has been following them couple and that he is also in town. After some shopping they return to the barge. Hoge brug at the Veermanskade, Hoorn

Frank wanted to jump on one of the boats to make the perfect shot and asked the owner if he could do so. He couldn’t . . . No problem captain . . .

Another picturesque view. Captain Brandt suggest to Jongman to fly from Brussels to Tangier instead of going to Paris. Brandt knows someone in Tangier who might help them to get into Palestine; Klaas van der Pink (Hugh Griffith). Location unknown.

They arrive at Roosendaal near the Belgium border and in the film they say that they are in Roosendaal but Frank has his doubts about that. The name of the border post is Meerveen. No information of Meerveen has been found by Frank. Location unknown.

And here, Sergeant Wolters also shows up. Wolters knows they are on board but he pretends he doesn’t know. Location unknown.

They pass the border safely and enter Belgium. Location unknown.

Peter Jongman goes to the address he was given by Brandt to meet Klaas van der Pink and they discuss how to smuggle Lisa to Palestine. For 5.000 dollars, or if Peter works on one of his boats for a year for free, he will smuggle her into the Holy Land. Peter leaves the place to think it over. Van der Pink advises Peter to go see Mr. Browne (Neil McCallum) tomorrow. A Studio set, Elstree Studios included for completeness.

Outside a stranger speaks to him and takes a photo of him. Peter goes back to the hotel where he and Lisa stay and strangely he meets the mysterious man again. He introduces himself as Mister Dickens (Robert Stephens). It turns out that he is some kind of English police officer and he tells them that Peter is no longer a fugitive wanted murderer but he is on suspicion of manslaughter. Again, a Studio set for completeness, at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire.

It is later found that England wants to get rid of Peter in order to avoid trial in London and notwithstanding events concerning Lisa it was arranged that they would both be smuggled into Palestine. As a result, Peter and Lisa leave Tangier by boat. After an encounter with some pirates Lisa is hurt by a bullet and needs medical attention, fast. Tangier, Morocco, seen from the Strait of Gibraltar. Frank and I have differing views as to whether or not this is a model, we both remain open to opinion.

Close to the shore the Jewish people welcome them. Unknown location, but could this be looking back at the 'Three Cliffs Bay' coastline?

Wounded Lisa and Peter set foot on the Holy Land. Tired and hurt but they made it! Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula in Glamorgan, Wales.

Barely awake and full of pain Lisa sees an tank, with the star of David on it and she realises she is safe now. Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula.

Peter and the captain of the ship see how Lisa is taken to the hospital in the tank. A sad, sad goodbye between the two. Whilst Peter was to return with three unknown persons as a favour to Dickens It turns out that the only person who is now going to be brought out of Palestine is Peter himself. The end, but is it a happy end? Lisa and Peter are not together but at least Lisa is save and well in Palestine.
