Shake Hands with the Devil

Eamon Andrews narrates "Dublin, 1921. A city at war. Often in its turbulent history, the men of Ireland had risen to fight for their freedom, only to be crushed. This was the year of total war. It was also the year of the Black & Tans, the army assembled to replace the English regulars who had lost their taste for the suppression of men in search of freedom." Looking down on Glasnevin Cemetery on Finglas Road, Glasnevin in Dublin.

Holding flowers, Kerry O'Shea (Don Murray) approaches the grave of his parents. James Keenan identifies the graveyard as Deansgrange Cemetery on Grange Terrace in Deansgrange, County Dublin.

Pat Cleary adds that this is the spot where the North Section meets the West Section where the film's grave seems to have been a prop. 65 years on, the weather has taken its toll on the memorials in view.

Although part of the same scene as the previous capture, Pat Cleary explains that this is the St. Patrick's Section in a different part of the cemetery. The now wider and taller bushes almost entirely block the view of the chapel in the background.

When a platoon of Black & Tans appear, the Mourners scatter and the coffin is dropped to reveal arms inside. Deansgrange Cemetery in Deansgrange, County Dublin where James Keenan discovered that, although obscured for filming, the names of several people who passed away the 1950s can be seen on the gravestones in the background, over 30 years after the story is set.

Pat Cleary found that the tall white memorial to the left is now hidden behind a bush.

Returning to the College of Surgeons where he is studying, Kerry glances over to a wanted poster offering a £1000 reward for Michael O'Leary. Looking from Front Square at Trinity College on College Green, Dublin 2 with the the Campanile in the background.

After enjoying a drink with Kerry, Paddy brings up his father Terrance O'Shea who took a bullet in 1898. St. Michael's Lane at the corner of Cross Lane in Dublin 8 identified by Tony Hanna.

Paddy is shot whilst pulling Kerry into an alley.

Knocking out one of the surviving Black & Tans, Kerry puts his arm around his friend's shoulders and helps him to the address that he muttered. After Paddy dies following an operation by Sean Lenihan, the surgeon takes Kerry to the underground headquarters of the IRA.

Given a choice to leave Ireland or join the organisation, Kerry is driven from Dublin to board a boat.

The day after Liam O'Sullivan is wounded whilst escaping from gaol, Terence O'Brien and Kerry are served pints of stout by Kitty Brady at Donovan's pub in Ardfalla. Seen from the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Chapel Street, this is Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare recognised by Gordon MacLeod (Mac). The bell-tower also makes an appearance in 'The Playboys' from 1992.

Pat Cleary had no camera crane to include the church bell in shot, but not a lot has changed here other than cars everywhere.

As the village bell strikes noon. Lady Fitzhugh (Sybil Thorndike) drives her Rolls Royce into the village. Facing south on Church Road towards the River Liffey in Ballymore Eustace.

A rather dull early Sunday morning but at least Pat had an opportunity to stand on the centre line.

Ahead, an armoured car and a truck carrying Black & Tans bar Lady Fitzhugh's way. Looking toward Chapel Street in Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare located by Mac.

Thankfully no blockade when Pat Cleary visited.

Telling the Captain that she will advise General French about the imposition, Lady Fitzhugh asks if he would like to look in the glove compartment for concealed weapons. Ballymore Eustace in County Kildare.

Pat Cleary found a wooden pole is still in situ. Shame about the missing thatch, though.

A Sergeant (Ronnie Walsh) calls that the trunk is locked and the Captain asks Lady Fitzhugh for the key. Chapel Street, although several names are used of various websites, in Ballymore Eustace.

It's good news Pat heard from a local that all of these little cottages are preserved buildings and some roofs are being replaced.

Explaining that she doesn't have the key, the Captain is happy to let her proceed until a dog begins to sniff and howl at the trunk. Facing the the Church of the Immaculate Conception and its gateway.

Not quite the correct angle but rain began to fall. Pat Cleary explains that the replacement statue is smaller and protected by either a perspex or glass cover.

After Kerry is taken to the barracks for questioning by the Black & Tans', Tommy Connor (Wilfred Downing) runs into the building where Lenihan, Noonan and Willie Lafferty are putting on British uniforms.

In an old army truck, the disguised men approach the gates of the barracks where Kerry is being interrogated by Colonel Smithson. Cathal Reilly advises that this is the headquarters of An Garda Siochana on North Road, Phoenix Park in Dublin 8.

Successfully being allowed through the gates, the truck is reversed up to the main building before Lenihan leads his Men inside to rescue the prisoner. Cathal Reilly continues to explain that building was originally intended to serve as a cavalry barracks, but became headquarters of the Royal Irish Constabulary before being taken over by An Garda in 1923, after Independence.

A small boat approaches the shore and a signal is sent to the lighthouse. Wicklow Head in County Wicklow with the Front Lighthouse to the left and the octagonal stone Old Lighthouse to the centre.

Receiving the message, Tom Cassidy (Harry Brogan) runs from the lighthouse to the truck that has arrived from the barracks. Alan Bourke identifies this as the Front Lighthouse at Wicklow Head to the south-east of Wicklow town advising that the lantern room has since been removed.

Lenihan walks in front of Noonan and Willie Lafferty (Donal Donnelly) who take the injured Kerry into the lighthouse. The gateway of the Front Lighthouse.

After Kerry decides to take the oath, he and Noonan walk on the hills beside the sea near the lighthouse.

Kerry asks when he will be needed before Kitty arrives to tell the pair that the Black & Tans are searching for the man that Lady Fitzhugh was to meet. In the right distance stands the Old Lighthouse on Dunbur Head at Wicklow Head which dates from around 1780.

Newspapers carry headlines about Lady Fitzhugh's trial before the peer is sentenced to serve two years in Mountjoy Prison. Looking across Whitworth Bridge from the junction of Usher’s Quay and Merchant's Quay.

Sir Arnold Fielding (Clive Morton) and his daughter Jennifer (Jennifer Curtis) appear at the door of their mansion as she prepares to go to the races accompanied by Captain Fleming (Alan White). Marlay House, Marlay Park in Rathfarnham, Dublin 14 recognised by Pat Cleary who adds that the the eastern slopes of Three Rock Mountain can be seen in the background. Among the films shot here are 'Johnny Nobody' and 'The Next Man'.

Pat mentions that the house was privately owned at the time of filming but is now an extremely well-kept and popular public park and gardens. The Annual Summer Longitude Concerts featuring world class bands takes place here.

Jennifer's car is brought to a halt at roadworks by a red flag held by out Michael O'Leary (Niall MacGinnis). Pat Cleary identifies this as Phoenix Park, Dublin, along the Military Road at the southern perimeter. Scenes from the 'Eternity Ring' episode of the 'Foyle's War' television Series were shot nearby.

Pat provides this comparison of the the location which is currently much overgrown with the spectacular long stretch of bush in the background now mostly replaced by fencing.

Following the ambush, the Armstrong Siddeley passes through a roadblock after Lenihan explains to Captain Fleming that it's Mrs. Curtis that they want. This is Killakee, Dublin 16, just above the ruin of the notorious Hellfire Club on Montpelier Hill located by Pat Cleary.

Roadworks are currently in progress in Pat's comparison and the road here occupied by the yellow van is closed. There are spectacular views from here of Dublin City both day and night when the weather is fine!

Kerry visits to check the health of Jennifer Curtis in her prison at the lighthouse. The Front Lighthouse at Wicklow Head was built around 1825.

After speaking with Mrs. Curtis, Kitty returns to Donovan's pub while Lenihan and the others sleep before travelling into Dublin to assassinate Colonel Smithson. Ballymore Eustace in County Kildare.

At Ashtown Dock on the River Liffey, a crane lifts a crate from the hold of a ship.

After buying a 10/- steerage ticket to Liverpool, Kitty Brady (Glynis Johns) is stopped by a Black & Tan patrol.

When Kerry arrives from Dublin, Lafferty tells him that Lenihan is intending to execute Mrs, Curtis. Located by Alan Bourke this is the gate to the Front Lighthouse at Wicklow Head with the earlier Old Lighthouse in the distance.
