Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo

The opening scene of this movie is a shot of castle de Haar. Kasteellaan 1, Utrecht

The oldest historical record of a building at the location of the current castle dates to 1391. In that year, the De Haar family received the castle and the surrounding lands as a fiefdom from Hendrik van Woerden. The castle remained in the ownership of the De Haar family until 1440, when the last male heir died childless. The castle then passed to the Van Zuylen family. In 2000, the family Van Zuylen van Nyevelt passed ownership of the castle and the gardens (45 ha) to the foundation Kasteel de Haar.

Manuel Gurtner provides this additional capture that includes the Ferrari 360 Modena, having established the location of the mill. It is being driven northwards on the Kalverringdijk road along Zaan river, passing by the De Zoeker oil mill, located in the Zaanse Schans, Zaanstad, North Holland. Frank does not believe that this adds anything to establishing the location of Capture 3 nor are there railway lines, as seen in Captures 4 and 5 in the Zaanstreek.

Manuel provides this Google aerial view that shows, interestingly, that the filming sequence was reversed.

Gigolo Diego Verga (Hilton Myburgh) leaves in a hurry this beautiful castle in his red Ferrari. See Captures 4 and 5.

He has to stop for a railroad crossing. We have been advised by Dolf Dijkstra, the driver of the train, that the location is Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij, a Dutch heritage railway between Apeldoorn and Dieren. Working with Dolf on these captures, Manuel Gurtner advises that the actual location is the unguarded Het Haselt level crossing on the outskirts of Lieren village and nearby the former Beekbergen station, where the VSM main facilities are located. The bell tower of the Lieren Protestant Church can be recognised in the background on the left.

After the tips from Dolf Dijkstra and Manuel Gurtner, Frank couldn’t wait to take the now shots of this location. Same weather, same location but the barrier is missing…

Almost out of nowhere a huge truck appears and pushes the Ferrari forward to the tracks and a train comes by and slams into the Ferrari. Needless to say that Diego didn’t survive. As per Capture 4 Dolf Dijkstra, the driver of the train, advises that the location is Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij, a Dutch heritage railway between Apeldoorn and Dieren. See also Capture 4.

As said: The barrier is missing. Watch out for trains that pass by!!!

Meanwhile in Malibu, California Deuce Bigalow (Rob Schneider) is working with his device that must save the whales but some kids steal it and switch the button and it drives the nearby dolphins, who are swimming with some elderly people, crazy. The result is a catastrophe, several old people are seriously injured. Unknown location.

The only wise thing Deuce can do is to get away as soon as possible. Unknown location.

Once home it becomes clear that his wife had passed away a while ago. She was attacked by sharks and the only thing of her remaining is her artificial leg. While he is watching the news he gets a phone call from his friend T.J. Hicks (Eddie Griffin) asking Deuce to come over. Damsquare, Amsterdam.

This is how the center of Amsterdam looks like on a sunny Sunday morning during the Covid-19 lockdown.

At first he says no, but when he sees a composition drawing of him he quickly agrees to come to Amsterdam. Damsquare, Amsterdam.

Here we see Dam 4 on the Damsquare in the center of Amsterdam. Build in 1886 and the architect was W. Langhout and the original function was a storage place for the company Van Gend & Loos.

Deuce takes the next plane to the Netherlands. LAX Airport, Los Angeles, USA

Can anybody explain to Frank why some people have ugly huge blue pool covers in front of their house?

Deuce spots a beautiful girl cleaning the windows. Herengracht 194, Amsterdam

Because of the reflection in the window it was quite easy to identify this location.

Finally he arrives at T.J.’s house boat called ‘Pimp of da Sea’. Brouwersgracht as seen from the Oranjebrug (Orange bridge).

This is how this location normally looks like. For the movie they transformed this decent and nice neighbourhood into the red light district. Probably because it creates too many privacy problems when they would have filmed in the real red light district.

Just like with cars T.J. is ready to bounce this boat and he does. T.J. discusses the problem of the killing of male prostitutes in recent times. They go out to a coffee shop and Deuce eats to much spacecake that he is spacing out completely. Brouwersgracht

As we can see clearly here, Amsterdam boats do NOT bounce in the canals!

They leave the coffee shop and Deuce will go back to the boat. Kadijksplein 11, Amsterdam

When Frank took this photo an angry woman came out of the restaurant and shouted that I had to stop making photos. Normally Frank has no problems doing that but because of the hostility he decided to take the photo anyway. Being kind to another isn’t that difficult.

Meanwhile another gigolo Heinz Hummer (Til Schweiger) seems to be lost in Amsterdam. In a dark alley he meets a strange person and before he can blink, he is killed. Unknown location.

Deuce tries to orientate himself and has difficulties to read Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. While he stands there reading he hears a whistle. Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal

While he follows the sound of the whistle he sees Heinz and he thinks he is drunk. Unknown location.

The killer walks away. Unknown location.

Deuce is so kind, that he drags Heinz to T.J.’s boat, not knowing that he is dead. Oranjebrug, Brouwersgracht, Amsterdam

Luckily for Frank there were no dead bodies when he was there to take the photo.

T.J. comes home and he sees that Heinz is dead. He drags his body to the canal to throw him in the canal. Intersection Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht at the Lekkeresluis

One of the few places in Amsterdam where you can walk down and get very close to the canal. This location can also be seen in 'Puppet on a Chain' Capture 39.

While T.J. Wants to throw the corps in the water a tourist boat comes by and numerous tourist film and take photos of T.J. next to a dead man. Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht at the Lekkeresluis.

It is impossible to take this photo at the exact same angle without swimming. Frank will do a lot to get ‘the perfect’ photo but not in the middle of the winter. Maybe in the summertime, Who knows…

In the evening news it is covered by all stations and because of that the police raid T.J.’s boat. Deuce is the only person on that boat so he is arrested. Inspector Casper Voorsboch (Jeroen Krabbe) is doing the interrogation of Deuce and asks him where T.J. is. Herengracht 179, Amsterdam

This isn’t a police station at all. It used to be a bank (Associatie Cassa), the building itself was designed by Christiaan Bernard Posthumus and it is relatively new (early 20th century). In the mid 90’s it became a luxury apartment complex.

After Deuce gets released he meets T.J. again and tells him that he is wanted by the authorities. Intersection Herengracht and Oude Leliestraat, Amsterdam

Just an average corner in the center of Amsterdam but always beautiful.

Deuce tells T.J. that he saw the killer and he thinks the killer is a woman. T.J. asks Deuce if he wants to infiltrate during the annual 'Man Whore Union' both disguised as a waiter. Oude Leliestraat

A Sunday morning in Amsterdam and everything is quiet and calm.

Deuce at one point, steals a blazer so he looks as though he belongs to the union as well. After a short and not so brilliant speech Deuce gets thrown out of the window. Pieter Jacobszstraat, Amsterdam

If you look closely at the pictures you can see that the place where Deuce gets thrown out of the window is in fact the entrance of the Pieter Jacobz Dwarsstraat. Done very clever this way.

T.J. has an old friend who might help him out of trouble. They go visit him. Deuce meets Antoine (Oded Fehr) who hands over a small book including a list of all the clients the dead gigolos had had recently. Hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam, Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197, Amsterdam

This used to be the city hall of Amsterdam (as seen in 'Turks Fruit', Capture 8). When 'Turks Fruit' was filmed this was the city hall. Nowadays it’s a well known hotel.

Now it will be a hard task for Deuce to romance with the entire list. So he starts with the first one. Polonceaukade, Amsterdam

Now this took Frank a while to establish this location, but in a split second of the movie some buildings can be seen on the right. And these buildings Frank recognised. Location identified!

The door opens and a huge woman appears pulling Deuce inside. Polonceaukade 20, Amsterdam

Well. This is not a house where people actually live. It belongs to the Poldergemaal Haarlemmerweg from where the water level in the Amsterdam canals is regulated.

The police, led by Inspector Casper Voorsboch are stopping a truck that is unloading packs of marihuana. Intersection Oude Leliestraat and Herengracht

In 2021 there are no racing police cars to be seen anywhere close to this location.

Not that unloading kilos of drugs is a problem but the truck is not allowed to park there. Deuce shows up and tells the inspector that T.J. is innocent. Anton Jolingbrug looking at the intersection Oude Leliestraat and Herengracht

Amsterdam in all it’s glory!

The Inspector enters the police headquarters and Casper’s niece Eva (Hanna Verboom) arrives. Deuce and Eva meet and he is obviously attracted to her. She has obsessive compulsive disorder. She tells him she has 130 weird habits. Quit a few…. Herengracht 179, Amsterdam

Back to the police station that is not a police station.

Because she like to draw animals they both decide to go to the aquarium in the zoo. Artis Zoo, Plantage Kerklaan 38-40, Amsterdam

Amsterdam without the tulips is like the ocean without water.

In the aquarium they are confronted with a nasty Frenchman who is bothering the fish. Deuce gets really mad and this is his punishment. Intersection Berenstraat and Keizersgracht, Amsterdam

Not on every corner in Amsterdam you can see a tourist with an American flag and a huge sign in front of him and this photo proofs that.

Deuce and Eva are walking through the city and Eva has to say goodbye to Deuce because she needs to go to work. Nieuwe Herengracht

And as usual, Amsterdam is under construction.

Deuce walks by the gigolo’s and he gets ridiculed by them. Amstelveld, Amsterdam

Nothing changed here except there is, because of the lockdown, nobody on the street.

Again, Deuce is working on the list of last customers/possible murderers. T.J. is disguised as a robot man. Noordermarkt and in the background the Noorderkerk, Amsterdam

At first Frank thought this was a part of the Westertoren but then he realised it was the Noorderkerk. Things like this happen sometimes.

Deuce takes the last customer of Heinz Hummer before he was killed, Lily (Zoe Telford), to a restaurant. Hotel De L’Europe Amsterdam as seen from Amstel, Amsterdam

If you are ever in Amsterdam and you have a big wallet; Drink a cup of coffee in this hotel. You sit close to the canal and you have a beautiful view of the Munttoren. That view can also been seen in 'Modesty Blaise' Capture 15.

The day after Deuce and Eva meet again for a romantic lunch. Amstel 7 looking in the direction of the Munttoren at the Rokin, Amsterdam

The Munttoren seen from one of the best spots to see it. Almost the exact angle and location can be seen in 'The Inspector aka Lisa' Capture 11 and Capture 57 in 'Operation Amsterdam'. A popular spot for filmmakers this is.

They quietly walk away after lunch in a sunny Amsterdam. On the right Zwanenburgwal and in front Amstel, Amsterdam.

Trees had to move in favour of the bikes. And Frank thought that Amsterdam was such a ‘green’ and ecological city. Shame on you Amsterdam!!

Eva needs to go to work and Deuce asks what kind of work she does but she is very vague about it. Armbrug at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam

Now this is indeed the real red light district. The buildings didn’t change but the red light district isn’t that red light any more due to a decision the city council made a couple of years ago. They decided that there should be more diversity in this neighbourhood. Forgetting that this part of town is a place for prostitutes, drug dealers and other outcasts for centuries.

Deuce hears a woman moaning in the distance. He fears the worst when he sees a line up with numerous man and……. A donkey. Armbrug at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam

What can we say?.. Just beautiful!

Deuce enters the building and picks up a guy who is on top of a blond girl and he throws him out of the window but the woman, is not Eva. Eva is quietly painting a wall in the background. Armbrug at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam.

Every film of Amsterdam takes a shot here. 'Ciske de Rat', 'Operation Amsterdam', 'Amsterdamned' and probably all the other films located in Amsterdam.

Deuce meets T.J. in disguise as he continues the list to find the killer. He needs to go out of Amsterdam and he takes the train. Hilletjesbrug on the Egelantiersgracht, Amsterdam

Looking closely at the screen shot one can see that someone gets arrested by two police officers. Luckily for Frank it is not forbidden to take photos in Amsterdam.

Deuce takes the train. As we know, Manuel Gurtner cannot resist the challenge of a location involving a train and tells us that he believes this to be the polder mill called Lageveensemolen, located at Loosterweg Zuid 6 in Lisse, Zuid-Holland. So the shot must have been taken from Leidsevaart road along the opposite side of the canal, called Haarlemmer Trekvaart, and shows a Class 400 "Apekop" Electric Multiple Unit (Whilst the Dutch differentiated between 'Hondekop' (MAT 54 Series) and 'Apekop' (MAT 64 Series) Frank tells us that no one actually called them 'apekoppen' both were referred to as 'hondekoppen') of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen on the main line between Leiden and Haarlem.

Manuel was indeed spot on and Frank quickly knew where to go for the comparative shot...............from a distance.

He visits several clients from the list but not one of them is the killer. Rusland 25 and 27, Amsterdam

Frank did pass by this location several times but every time there was a car standing in front of this house. Frank is sometimes a little impatient so he took the shot anyway.

Meanwhile T.J. is still in disguise and even the police pastes posters on the walls. Wanted for homicide is what the posters say with a composition drawing. Keizersgracht 307, Amsterdam

No basketball players with a huge Afro haircut to be seen. No police either by the way.

Deuce tells T.J. that he had heard that they have to go back to the main whore society and that the key of the solution lies there. Unknown location.

That evening they manage to sneak back into Aquarium Artis, Plantage Middenlaan 53, Amsterdam

It took Frank a long time to find this location. Where could it be? It is in Amsterdam because in another shot can be seen a tram pass by. Suddenly he remembered the side entrance of the Zoo Artis and indeed that is the location.

Because they make to much noise they get detected and T.J. gets arrested as being the killer. Aquarium Artis, Plantage Middenlaan 53, Amsterdam

The next morning Deuce runs to Eva’s house. Eva lives in a house with her uncle inspector Casper Voorsboch. Eva is taking a shower and Deuce sees certain things in her room that connects her with the murders. Unknown location.

Once Deuce is out of sight of Eva he runs faster than the speed of light out of the house. Eerste Leliedwarsstraat and looking in the direction of the Westertoren, Amsterdam.

And he runs and he runs. Korte Niezel, Amsterdam.

Now this was a location Frank didn’t find but thanks to RL this place could be identified. From The Netherlands I say: Dank je wel Richard!!

Deuce goes to the Inspector at the police station and tells him that he thinks that Eva is the actual killer. Both of them decide to go to Eva and Casper’s house. Meanwhile Eva finds in her uncle’s room all kinds of connections with the killings and she suspects her uncle to be the killer. The Inspector enters the room where Eva is and confesses that he is the killer and that he will kill them all with a bomb tonight. He locks her up and leaves the building. Unknown location.

Deuce and the Inspector drive to the annual 'Man Whore Union' where they vote for the man whore of the year that evening. Eva manages to escape and comes after the Inspector and Deuce on her scooter. Amstel, Amsterdam

No racing woman on scooters this time.

Eva shouts to Deuce that he is sitting next to the killer, but he cannot hear exactly what Eva says. Intersection Amstel and Prinsengracht, Amsterdam

If we wait another ten years the big tree on the left will collapse!!

The white building on the left on the other side of the river Amstel is called Carre and it is probably the most beautiful theatre of the Netherlands.

Inspector Casper Voorsboch keeps Deuce at gunpoint while driving. Amstel and in the background can be seen the Magere brug (Skinny bridge). Amsterdam

Nobody put a gun into Frank’s face when he took this shot.

Casper explains that he wanted to be a gigolo as well when he was young but when he caught his fiancé in the middle of the classroom with all the gigolos it was only hate and revenge from that moment. Hendrick de Keijserbrug, Intersection Achtergracht and Amstel, Amsterdam

Why is it with chase scenes in Amsterdam that cars do have the tendency to fly instead of driving? Check Capture 36 of 'Amsterdamned'.

The inevitable happens when the car is out of control and collides with street furniture. Intersection Amstel and Keizersgracht, Amsterdam.

As you can see they removed the green urinoir behind the car, called De Krul. This is so typical for Amsterdam but recently they remove them and replace them for more woman friendly urinoirs because in the old one only man can take a leak. Fact is that the old ones look ten times better than the new ones.

Instantly a tourist jumps to the crash side and irritates the people. Intersection Amstel and Keizersgracht, Amsterdam.

The car demolished the urinoir!!!!!!!

The inspector pulls someone off his bike and quickly cycles away. The inspector rushes to the 'Man Whore Union' followed by Deuce and Eva. Deuce jumps on stage and screams that he has a bomb. Everybody runs to the exit. The inspector gets into a fight with Deuce and outside all the people can follow everything on a big screen, and while fighting, Deuce tells Casper what a woman really wants and outside all the woman applaud. Amstel, Amsterdam. .

Lockdown, Sunday morning… Amsterdam at it’s best!

Just before Casper pushes the button of the detonator he gets knocked out by Deuce. Eva instantly kisses Deuce and the Inspector gets arrested. Aquarium Artis, Plantage Middenlaan 53, Amsterdam.

Looks like a building in Paris or some other southern capital city but it is in Amsterdam east.

Deuce gets his buddy out of jail and in the epilogue we read that Deuce and Eva got married and T.J. became a rapper. Herengracht 482, Amsterdam.

It looked like T.J. came out of jail but the fact is that this used to be the side entrance of the headquarters of a well known bank.
