Argus reporter Dunham (Cyril Smith) asks Peter Pettinger (William Hartnell) if he stands by what he said about his employer giving little reward to the young socialist’s father when he made improvements to one of the factory machines.

After Mr. Overend passes away, Pettinger inherits the factory and the businessman’s former home. Geoff Dodd identifies the country house as Wall Hall to the north of Aldenham in Hertfordshire which also appears in 'No Time for Tears', 'The Nanny' and 'The Vampire Lovers'.

Returning to the factory one evening, Pettinger discovers Ben Duckett (Moore Marriott) explaining the workings of a machine to Tom Tetley and Lettie Shackleton (Mary Morris) and realises that the old man had a part to play in the invention of the machine that increased the business’s productivity ten fold.
