The race continues into the night during which two cars from the Jaguar team are lost and Rafferty's colleague Harry Burton is killed. Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans.

As morning dawns Rafferty and mechanic Richie Launder get ready for car 3 to pull in. The starting grid and pit lane on Circuit de la Sarthe.

Sitting with other Spectators, Mrs. Rafferty and her son Taz watch car 3 return to the pits where a still tired Greg takes over the wheel. Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans in Sarthe, the department named after the River Sarthe.

Returning to London following his recovery from the almost fatal crash, Greg Rafferty makes his way to meet with Joseph Bartell. Tower Bridge seen from Butlers Wharf SE1 with the Port of London Authority building and the Tower of London over in EC3.

Greg pulls up outside the Savoy Hotel. Savoy Place in WC2, a location that also features in 'Night of the Demon', 'East of Piccadilly' and 'I Could Go On Singing'.

Getting out of his Gordon-Keeble GT, Greg Rafferty (Bill Travers) enters the hotel where the American offers him a job testing tyres to a design that reduces the chance of skidding. Savoy Place with the corner of Savoy Hill to the left and the junction with Savoy Street and Victoria Embankment in the distance.

The north-eastern end of the Victoria Embankment Gardens has become very bushy. SJ

Driving from London, Greg heads for Chalfont to where his mechanic Richie has returned after losing his job. Anthony McKay found Church Lane in Aldenham, Hertfordshire with Aldenham Social Club to the left.

Antony Blair returned to the scene.

Outside their garage, Richie Launder (Sid James) and his wife Kitty Launder (Megs Jenkins) look up when Greg arrives.

The friends greet each other before Greg asks Richie to be his mechanic for another season.

At Silverstone, Joseph Bartell (Ed Begley) and his daughter Diane (Nancy Walters) watch Rafferty test a car to Richie's design. Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit at Silverstone in Northamptonshire.

Being on the circuit I am somewhat off angle but it fills a gap until someone can gain access to the required camera position. A better shot had I been able to take the outside line? (RL)

The next day Greg is met by his Mother when he arrives at the family home before being told that Taz is driving for the Aston Martin team in the International at Goodwood.

Following an argument with his brother, Taz storms out of the house and drives off in his Triumph TR3.

Having agreed to drive Richie's car on Bartell's tyres, Greg is invited to the United States where his relationship with Diana grows. The Stork Club was, until 1965, a nightclub on East 53rd Street in Manhattan, New York, New York.

Bartell enters Greg in the Sebring Ring 12-hour race with Jack Brabham as his partner. Sebring in Highlands County, Florida.

Trialling Bartell's tyres, Brabham advises Greg on their performance when the British driver takes over.

Having won the Sebring Ring 12-hour on another manufacturer's tyres, Greg and Richie take their car to Italy to race in the Mille Miglia.

At their base near Brescia, Richie times his mechanics as they practice changing tyres. The storyline suggests Brescia in Lombardy.

Outside the base, Rossano's Maserati speeds past.

Lupi (Harold Kasket) clears away after Taz joins Greg and his team for lunch. Dave Buckley confirms that this and the following capture are indeed MGM studio sets and has sent us an extract capture from an episode of 'Danger Man' 1960 called 'The Trap' showing the very same set. (RL)

Greg and Richie drive away for a practice run in their spare car with Bartell's new tyres fitted. Possibly a set at MGM's Borehamwood Studios in Hertfordshire. Yes, it is a set, see previous capture. (RL)

Leaving the hotel, Greg accelerates away.

Kitty and Diane look from the hotel window to see their loved ones speed through town.

While negotiating mountain roads Greg brings the car to a stand at the spot where his father Patrick was killed. Likely to be somewhere in the Merionethshire mountains.

Following Richie's death in a crash during the practice run, Rafferty decides to compete in the Mille Miglia, just as his old friend would have wanted.

With Taz as his navigator, Greg speeds away in car 501 followed by Rossano in car 505.

600 cars compete in the 1,000 mile race from Brescia to Rome and back. Although the film was released in 1961, the last Mille Miglia took place in May 1957.

Interspersed with several back projections, the race continues. This shows Place de la République, Tende, France, facing north. (SR)

Rossano gains on Greg and Taz before overtaking the Launder.

Bartell makes his way to Florence where a pit has been set up.

Rossano reaches the Control Point at Florence just seconds before Greg.

After a short stop, Greg accelerates away after Rossano.

The race nears the spot where the brothers' father was killed.

Tyres squeal as a corner is taken.

Greg and Taz pass a wrecked car as they race on to the finish line . . . . Portmeirion in Merionethshire with the Town Hall to the centre. The village also appears in 'Under Suspicion' as well as, famously, television's 'The Prisoner'.
