The title sequence shows a montage of images of the pier and the surrounding area. Worthing Pier, Worthing, West Sussex.

Worthing Pier was also seen in 'Ashes and Sand', 'Cor Blimey', 'The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer' and 'Up the Junction', as well as the Will Young video for the song 'My Love'.

Marine Parade viewed from the pier. The Warnes apartments on the left replaced the Warnes Hotel which was seen in 'Up the Junction' and 'Wish You Were Here'. The building under construction next to The Warnes is The Eardley which replaced the Eardley Hotel which was seen in the 'Men Behaving Badly' episode 'Gary in Love'. The beach shelter on the left was seen in 'Dance With a Stranger'.

The most recent construction is Bayside Vista which, at 15 storeys high, is the tallest building in Worthing.

Teenager Sam (Jack McMullen) makes his way along the pier to meet up with his best friend Kieran. Worthing Pier.

The kiosk wasn't open today.

Kieran (Reece Noi) mocks Sam because of his lack of experience with girls. Worthing Pier landing stage on the west side of the pier.

The landing stage was originally used by passengers on pleasure cruises. Now it's used by anglers.

Later at a party on the beach, Kieran kisses his girlfriend Moony (Georgia Henshaw). The Lido viewed from Worthing beach.

Worthing's most iconic building was almost demolished due to the cost of repairs, but in 2005 the Dome secured Lottery and Heritage Funding which allowed a full restoration to take place.

Kieran remembers when his father used to tell him that if you swim past the horizon you would find sea monsters. Worthing beach with The Lido in the background.

This part of The Lido is the exterior of the restaurant. The interior was also seen in the film.

Sam mentions that he needs a black suit for his uncle's funeral. Worthing Pier landing stage and the Southern Pavilion.

At the time of filming, the Southern Pavilion was being used as a nightclub. In 2014 the Southern Pavilion was fully restored and become an art deco tea room. Now under new ownership, the Southern Pavilion is undergoing further restoration.

Lori goes into a charity shop to acquire a black suit for Sam. The Cats Protection charity shop, on the corner of Rowlands Road and Queen's Road, Worthing.

I did have a look, but they didn't have any black suits.

The shop adjoining Cats Protection was seen in 'Wish You Were Here' as Hubert Mansell's barber shop.

At the time of filming, the building on the left was a restaurant. It is now converted to flats.

Lori runs through a churchyard. Christ Church, facing Humphrey's Road, Worthing.

Christ Church is the only town centre church in Worthing with a surrounding graveyard.

Christ Church was completed in 1843 and was the first Parish Church in the town centre.

When Simple Dave (Jack Guttman) points out that Lori is a thief, Sam replies, "God judges, Dave, not us!". Christ Church, facing Humphrey's Road.

The main entrance to the church is actually in Grafton Road.

Lori says that she will take them out in her uncle's fishing boat. Worthing Pier. The entrance to the west side of the landing stage.

The landing stage can also be accessed by steps on the east side and at the end of the pier.

During the renovation of the Southern Pavilion, temporary fencing has been put up.

As they walk through the park, Kieran climbs up the fence. The Tennis Courts, Homefield Park, Worthing.

The tennis courts now have a replacement fence. Not so easy to climb!

They take out the boat for some sea fishing which makes Sam seasick. Worthing beach, facing, from the right, New Parade, the Aquarena swimming pool and East Beach Chalets overwalk which was seen in 'Wish You Were Here'.

The Splash Point Leisure Centre was completed in 2013, and The Bay Apartments were built on the site of the Aquarena. With no boat available, I waded out at low tide for a matching shot.

Walking back home with Lori they pass the other houseboats. Shoreham houseboats, situated on the estuary of the River Adur.

The boats move at each high tide as they are lifted from the mud.

Lori tells them about the massive house she and her mother had in Bristol. Riverbank, Shoreham-by-Sea, with houses on River Close to the right.

When Lori sees her mother, Sue (Maggie O'Neill), she tells Sam he can't come in. The houseboat named Verda. number 20 Riverbank.

Verda was originally a Portsmouth to Gosport Ferry which was in service from 1929 to 1958 and a 60 seater coach which is joined to the hull. The other boat, Clive, is an aeroplane made from polystyrene built on the hull of a World War 2 motor torpedo boat.

It appears that the tree has only recently been cut down.

In reality, Sam should be heading in a north westerly direction to reach the station.

At the station, Sam watches a couple kissing as he waits for his train. Worthing Railway Station, Railway Approach.

Worthing Station was also seen in 'Beware of the Dog' and 'The Persuaders' TV series episode 'Anyone Can Play'.

After buying drinks and sweets at a convenience store, Kieran and Lori spend the day together. Worthing promenade, viewed from opposite the entrance of the Pavilion Atrium.

In Pirate World Kieran impersonates a pirate. Brooklands Park, Western Road, Worthing. Beside the bridge leading from the car park,

There are no boats, trains or pony rides here now.

Lori and Kieran continue playing as pirates on Pirate Island. The island is in Brooklands Park lake.

The island is larger now and the pirates are gone. In the background is Milford Court on Brighton Road and Francombe House on the corner of Brighton Road and Western Road.

After their drunken antics, Lori and Kieran are chased by Pirate World staff. Brooklands Park miniature railway bridge.

After the miniature railway closed and the bridge was removed, a small section of track remained embedded in concrete which shows the exact location of the bridge.

Kieran and Lori are thrown out of Pirate World. The bridge seen in Capture 39, facing Brooklands Park lake.

Now with an extra fence to stop any drunken pirates falling into the Teville Stream which flows into the lake.

The hillside is much tidier now.

They sit and take in the view. Mill Hill, facing Lancing College.

Lancing College was scouted for the Harry Potter films, but was never used as a location. Although it hasn't appeared on film visually, sound effects used in the 2008 film version of 'Brideshead Revisited' were recorded there.

Kieran tells Lori that his father is detained at Her Majesty's pleasure. Mill Hill, facing the A27 Shoreham By-Pass.

Mill Hill is a Nature Reserve owned by Adur District Council and managed in partnership with the South Downs National Park.

After she runs down the hill, Lori meets up with Kieran on the beach. Worthing beach, viewed from beside the pier.

A lot more shingle has now been added to the beach.

When Sam returns after the funeral, he tells Kieran that he has left messages for both him and Lori, but their phones are switched off. Worthing Pier landing stage.

The landing stage has recently undergone emergency repair work due to storm damage.

Sam walks off when he can't get an answer from Kieran. The landing stage, on the west side of the pier.

In 2008 the paddle steamer Waverley caused damage to the structure while docking. Since then the landing stage is no longer used for embarkation.

For 97 years the structure has been exposed to the harsh elements of the sea and is in need of restoration.

During an argument, Sam goads Kieran to punch him in the face. He does! By the steps on the west side of the landing stage.

Premium House on the Esplanade (seen between the two white buildings) was built on the site of The Haven, the house in which Oscar Wilde wrote 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. The Haven was demolished in 1967.

Moony brings Geoffrey a hangover cure. The Lido, which was also seen in 'Stan and Ollie'.

The mural, which was painted on the wall of the bandstand for 'Stan and Ollie', is still in place.

Sam leaves the house hoping to see Lori. 26 Gannon Road.

Apart from a new driveway, the house looks very much the same.

When he arrives at Lori's home he finds no sign of her. Riverbank, Shoreham-by-Sea.

The houseboats were also seen in episode 7 of the TV drama 'Cuffs'.

He realises something is wrong. Verda houseboat.

The owner of Verda also has a boat called Dodge, which is used as a holiday let.

Rose reminisces about the day she met Marvin Gaye. Brooklands Park, facing Western Road. Brooklands Miniature Railway opened in 1965. In 1967 the track was extended around the lake. This is the Diddly Dee train which ran from 2009 until the closure of the railway in 2018.

A planned restoration of the park will include a new accessible path circumnavigating the lake with seating areas and shelters.

Many changes here now. The student accommodation block Urbanest at 103 Camley Street was completed in 2014.

The building on the left is the recently completed Apex, the first phase of the Tribeca development, 2-6 St Pancras Way. This replaces the former Royal Mail depot which became known as 'The Ugly Brown Building'.

At the market, Sam and Moony buy the ingredients for the meal that Moony will be cooking. Worthing Farmer's Market, South Street Square, facing Warwick Street. Now pedestrianised, this is the location of the roundabout seen in 'The Birthday Party'.

The Farmer's Market is no longer held in Worthing, but there is a market held in Montague Street every Wednesday. When some of the stalls were temporarily set up in South Street Square, this French patisserie stall was in exactly the right place for a matching shot.

Moony shows Sam the view of St. Paul's from the balcony of the flat, This scene and the interiors were filmed in a different flat to the one that Sam arrived at. This is viewed from Cedar Court, Essex Road, London, N1, facing south towards St. Pauls Cathedral (just visible on the right) with Great Arthur House, Golden Lane Estate in the centre and behind it the Lauderdale Tower, Barbican Estate EC1.

Different railings or just stripped of their paint?

Sam enrols at the Winston Clark College of Technology. St. Paul's Court, assisted accommodation. 1 Richmond Road, with Worthing Post Office, Chapel Road in the background.

St Paul's Court is adjacent to St. Paul's Church, Chapel Road. In 2012 The church became The Venue, an arts centre with a Cafe which was used in the film.

In a symbolic act, Sam cuts the boat free with bolt cutters. East Worthing beach, The fishing boat SM17 is named "Jaffa" and is still in use.

Sam receives a text message from Kieran who has also returned and wants to meet him near the pier. The shelter situated beside The Lido.

Sam goes to The Lido to find Moony.

The Lido was opened in 1925 as an enclosed bandstand. In 1957 a pool was added. In 1988 the pool was closed and became the temporary home of the Brighton Sea Life dolphins. In 1989 the pool was built over and The Lido became a family entertainment centre.

As with 'Stan and Ollie' the rides were temporarily relocated while filming took place. In June 2021 filming also took place here for 'Living' starring Bill Nighy.
