Separation

The film opens with a hearse travelling down a suburban street with houses reflected in its windows. 12 and 10 Denehurst Gardens, Richmond, Surrey.

With no passing hearse I have had to reverse my shot.

Jane's (Jane Arden) young lover (Iain Quarrier) is 'introduced' driving his car against a backdrop of the construction of the elevated section of the Kingston By Pass, Surrey.

Shortly to have a clearer view of 'Shannon Office Furniture' building that gave its name to ‘Shannon Corner’.

The camera pans to the back seat of the car where we see Jane aged as a 'Granny'. Shannon Corner with the windows of the 'Duke of Cambridge', public house in the top right hand corner. This more recently became an outlet for 'Krispy Kreme American' doughnut restaurant. During its life it was the haunt of the 1950’s gangsters, the Kray twins, who enjoyed part ownership.

The lights appear to have gone out now.

Confirming that there are no lights on in the Tower now.

Exiting the car, the 'current day' Jane enjoys the water feature at ground level before entering the building to visit her husband/psychiatrist from whom she is separated. Looking south towards Tolworth Tower with the shops on Tolworth Broadway to the right.

Certain lack of charm and vibrancy now.

We see the undertakers remove the body of Jane's mother from the house to the hearse. Some film analysts see the death of her mother as the trigger for her mental breakdown. 25 Denehurst Gardens in Richmond, Surrey.

Remaining on the public pavement I am only slightly off line.

Today's vehicle probably wouldn't have fitted in the garage anyway.

The younger 'alta ego' of Jane is seen through the windows of the hearse as she walks past No 27 Denehurst Gardens.

Very little has changed.

The wrought ironwork confirms the location.

Very soon, she is passed by a group of 'enthusiastic' youths on bicycles. Denehurst Gardens, Richmond in Surrey.

I drew the line at lying on my stomach in the middle of the road.

Janes's young lover continues his car journey to a cemetery. We thought that this was East Sheen Cemetery given features seen in the next capture but the buildings in the background there, nor the headstones, are evident in that cemetery.

The straight narrow road and the trees are very similar to North Sheen Cemetery but the tall buildings on the horizon and apparently on higher ground does not equate. Further captures from this sequence can be viewed via the Header Section in the hope that it might help establish the location. West Road in St Pancras Cemetery has similar features to the capture but other aspects are difficult to reconcile. The location remains very much open.

Jane's lover makes a dramatic entrance to his meeting with her. Looking South West along the River Thames at Isleworth in Greater London with Bridge Wharf to the right. The Director, Jack Bond, tells us that the crane was the last working steam driven crane on the Thames.

With the crane now decommissioned I was not expecting a dramatic scene.

Jane sits patiently for her lover to arrive.........following a reminiscence of a meeting they had had in Albufeira, Portugal.......Looking South West along the River Thames at Isleworth with Bridge Wharf to the right.

To replicate the screen capture would have resulted in half the shot being a concrete wall.

.........we see Jane descending some stairs of 'The London Apprentice' public house, Isleworth........ Looking towards the houses in Church Street. The Church of All Saints was burned out after an arson attack on 27 May 1943.

At the rebuilding of the church in the late 1960s, the outer walls of the aisles were retained, but reduced in height.

.......to sit at a table as she had in Capture 20 but now with a view to meeting her husband/psychiatrist (David de Keyser). The terrace of The London Apprentice, Isleworth towards Church Street. The pub and surrounding area also make an appearance in 'White Caro', 'Das Verrätertor', 'Walk a Tightrope' and 'Sebastian'.

A notice says 'Do Not Use'............why not take it away then?

Jane and her lover are seen aboard a barge. Looking South West along the River Thames at Isleworth with Bridge Wharf to the right.

Parts of the crane have been left, hopefully, in recognition of its stated historic importance.

Perhaps relative to aspects referred to in his palm we watch Jane's lover escaping a building at roof level with jewellery, eventually to be seen at ground level..... 26 Hill Street, London W1

Jane sends the key to the house down by parachute to her lover.

Clearly nobody was eager to throw a key down to me.

We are briefly shown the view from Jane's bedroom window. Looking over Warwick Place, with ‘The Warwick Castle’ to the left, towards old St Saviour's Church in Warwick Avenue. Demolished in 1972.

Jane rides her lovers bicycle through the leafy undergrowth of Holland Park while he playfully pursues her before they stop at the statue of Lord Holland to continue in joyful conversation and song.

Lord Holland has been moved to a more salubrious setting.

Against a background of air raid sirens Jane becomes anxious, having become separated from her lover. The entrance to ‘Portobello Court’ on Portobello Road, London W11 with Aston House to the right.

A quieter market day.

They continue to wander along Portobello Road, Jane wants to "buy something beautiful". Portobello Road, Aston House to the left and the junction with Westbourne Grove and the ‘Earl of Lonsdale’ public house top right once again.

Keen gardeners live there now.

They absorb the way the Portobello Road was in the 1960's. Westbourne Grove and the ‘Earl of Lonsdale’ public house top left and the entrance to Vernon Yard extreme right.

Those and other road restrictions don't help the vibrance of the market.

We catch up with the pair in Kings Road to the background music of 'Salad Days (Are Here Again)' performed by 'Procol Harum'. Looking across to circa 13 to 19 Kings Road, London SW3

A rather more expensive shopping parade these days.

Walking past the camera to 'their' parked car........ Kings Road looking towards Sloane Square and the junction with Lower Sloane Street top left of centre.

Scaffolding in a screen capture and not in our comparative shot, now that is a rarity.

Ebury Street, London SW1, with Kilmuir House out of sight to the left before South Eaton Place. It looks as thought the area to the right has now gone through its second phase of re-development.

How long will this development last?

Camera positions are rather dictated by safe refuge these days.

A quiet road whilst I was there so I could assume the correct camera position.

I believe it is many years since a flower seller was seen here in the square.

A shot from the open door of 'Rymans' doesn't have the same "je ne sais quoi".

Now in old age as 'Granny' she enters 'Fenwick's' store where we also see her as her younger 'alta ego'.

Following a confusing sequence with other people in a swimming pool we see Jane's lover take her younger 'alta ego' to the top of the diving board from where he jumps. Richmond Swimming Pool, Old Deer Park, Twickenham Road.

The young Jane wanders off with 'Teddy' on to Mortlake Green.

The telephone and police boxes have long gone.

Jane now occupies one of the children's swings as she muses on freedom and perhaps the feeling of liberation, is she mentally ill, is she trapped?

It rather looks like the same set of swings.

Finally, perhaps back in Holland Park we see Jane either taunted by her lover, or perhaps mentally. Most likely the latter, as perhaps the lover has to die and that is the responsibility of 'Granny'. 'Shots' are fired between them but only 'Granny' appears to 'die'.
