King in New York, A

Leaving Estrovia, deposed King Igor Shahdov flees to New York. A view down onto Lower Manhattan where to the centre stands the City Bank–Farmers Trust Building, now styled as 20 Exchange Place, with 40 Wall Street, currently the Trump Building, behind and to the right. The Hudson River can be seen to the top left.

After being met at the airport by Jaume, his Ambassador, the King is taken to his hotel. Looking towards the Empire State Building on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, New York.

The King and the Ambassador learn that Prime Minister Dr. Voudel has deposited the country's securities in the First National Bank. The top of the Empire State Building in Manhattan.

Looking through the window of his hotel room, King Shahdov welcomes the opportunity to breathe the free air of wonderful America. The north-west corner of the intersection of Park Avenue and East 53rd Street in New York.

The intersection now taken by Janette Cotton who points out the same small brown building to the lower left.

The camera moves to bring the street signs into view that prove the location.

Following a tour of the city where he experiences rock and roll dancing, watches a CinemaScope film with difficulty and is deafened by a big band in a restaurant, King Igor Shahdov (Charlie Chaplin) is invited to an exhibition at a progressive school. Littleton Park House at Shepperton Studios in Littleton, Middlesex.

The King is escorted into the building followed by Ambassador Jaume (Oliver Johnston). Littleton Park House at Shepperton Studios, similar views of which also appear in 'The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It', 'Suspect', 'The Horror of It All' and 'The Spy with a Cold Nose'.

When the Prime Minister steals his funds, the King is persuaded to earn money by appearing in advertisements and his face appears all over the city. Times Square in Manhattan, New York with the Sheraton Astor Hotel on the left.

Facing north-east in Times Square with West 45th Street crossing the intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue to the centre. The square appears in many films including ‘The File of the Golden Goose’, ‘The Man Without a Body’, ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’ and ‘The Anderson Tapes’.

Billboards spring up everywhere ensuring that the campaign is a success. 42nd Street at Fifth Avenue in New York City located by Steve Randall.

Janette Cotton explains that on the Royal Crown billboard in the screen capture, beneath the letter 'R' is a set of 4 arches which can be seen today along with a couple of the surviving buildings beyond and the spire of St. Patrick's Cathedral in the left distance.

On a snowy day, King Shahdov finds the young Rupert Macabee (Michael Chaplin) outside the Ritz Hotel.

Becoming entangled in a fire hose, the King runs from a down-town office block followed by his Lawyer Mr. A. P. Green (Harry Green).

Outside the building, King Shahdov and Mr. Green struggle to get into a cab. Berkeley Square in Mayfair, London W1 with the Jack Barclay Bentley dealership in the background. Other views of the square appear in ‘I’ll Never Forget You’, ‘Go to Blazes’, ’11 Harrowhouse’ and ‘Two Gentlemen Sharing’.

King Shahdov and his Lawyer enter the Court where the monarch is questioned about being a Communist. The Tate Gallery on Millbank SW1. The building appears in a number of productions including ‘Fun at St. Fanny's', 'The Horse's Mouth', 'Food for a Blush', 'How to Undress in Public Without Undue Embarrassment', 'Escape Route', 'Seven Days to Noon' and ‘Stop Press Girl'.

The new Tate Britain lettering gives it away as London nowadays. SJ

Cleared by the House Committee on Un-American Activities, King Shahdov flies to Paris to join his estranged wife, Queen Irene. To the top right stands the Metropolitan Life Clock Tower behind 11 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York with Madison Square Park on the extreme right.
