Face the Music

Inside the London Palladium, spot lights shine down on trumpet player James Bradley as he comes to the end of his latest appearance on a European tour. Facing the London Palladium on Argyle Street W1. The theatre can also be seen in ‘St. Martin’s Lane’, ‘I Could Go On Singing’, ‘Croupier’ and 1935’s ‘The 39 Steps’.

Avoiding his agent's plans for the night, Brad narrates "After leaving Maxie to deal with the party, I jumped a taxi and headed for home". Piccadilly Circus in W1 with the London Pavilion to the left of centre.

"To avoid it we turned off into a side street, but that only made things worse." Whilst waiting behind a truck, Brad hears Maxine Halbard singing in a nearby club and gets out of the taxi to investigate. Great Windmill Street W1 with the Windmill Theatre to the right.

After questioning by Inspector Mulrooney following Maxine's murder, James Bradley (Alex Nicol) takes a break from rehearsals and walks to the Underground Club to look for Barbara Quigley, the dead woman's sister. Berwick Street in W1.

Carrying out his own investigations, Brad makes his way to find Johnny Sutherland on the story's Macclesfield Street off East India Dock Road. Facing west on Albert Road at the corner of Kennard Street E16. In the left distance stand the Royal Albert public house at the corner of Tate Road and Silvertown Methodist Church set back from the road.

Brad turns into fictional Macclesfield Street. Looking north along Kennard Street in North Woolwich with Our Lady & St. Edward’s church to the left and the cranes of the King George V Dock beyond Newland Street in the background.

A cab brings Brad to Miss Quigley's flat on the film's Bridge Street in SW7. Steve Randall discovered that it really is SW7, Elvaston Place looking towards St. Georges Court on Gloucester Road.

Looking west and managing to capture one of the utility covers. SJ

Following another show, Brad returns to Barbara's flat where he is knocked out after finding her on the living room floor. That No 27 bus was all that was needed for Dave W to establish the location, Kensington High Street, London W8 looking east. The distant rectangular light 'blob' is on the tower of Barkers department store. (RL)

I was close with the bus capturing a 28 rather than a 27 but more importantly caught Barker's rectangular tower top in daylight. SJ

Brad pays a visit to Maurie Green's recording studio to find out more about a series of discs featuring pianist Jeff Colt. Jules Ballantyne has found this to be 7 Addison Road, London W14. (RL)

The best angle I can manage looking towards the south-west point of the Woodsford Square development. The Front Cottage, as marked in old maps and seen in the original, would have been to the left out of shot. Beyond the trees, in the original, was the now demolished no.6 Addison Road, seen in The One That Got Away. SJ

Shortly after, Maurie Green (Geoffrey Keen) arrives at his studios. This naturally follows the previous capture, 7 Addison Road, W14 with thanks to Jules. (RL)

Driving deep into the English countryside, Brad arrives at the gates of the Weatherdon Mental Home. Oakley Court, Windsor Road, Water Oakley, Berkshire. Also seen in 'The Stranger Came Home', 'What the Butler Saw' an 'The Man in Black'. (RL)

The entrance to Oakley Court has been moved to the east and looks grander though the columns have been rebuilt in the same style. SJ

Brad drives up to the home where he hopes to find the answer to a missing photograph from Barbara's album. Oakley Court, Windsor Road, Water Oakley, Berkshire. (RL)
