Bullet from the Past (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

A bus passes over railway bridge as Mr. Roper makes her way to work at her employers cottage on the outskirts of Guildford. Forest Lane in East Horsley, Surrey, facing the bridge taking Forest Road over the railway to the south-west of Effingham Junction.

Catching up with the Milkman (Anthony Sagar), Mrs. Roper (Gretchen Franklin) offers to take that morning's milk from him. Forest Lane, East Horsley.

John Harwood went down the lane.

The housekeeper hurries to the cottage where she discovers Matthew Grant's corpse in the living room. The Cottage stands on Forest Lane, East Horsley in Surrey.

Finding no breeze block built cottages, John Harwood settled on this example of the buildings now occupying Forest Lane.

Following preliminary investigations by Inspector Reynolds and Sergeant Scott, Scotland Yard Detectives are called in when the bullet removed from Mr. Grant's body is found not to be the one fired from his revolver. Looking northward on Victoria Embankment SW1.

A lot of work going on. Once it's completed, a winter shot would ameliorate this. SJ

Inspector Berkeley of Scotland Yard is put in charge of the case. Facing New Scotland Yard on Victoria Embankment, headquarters of the Metropolitan Police between 1890 and 1967.

As investigations continue into the murder, a bullet from Mr. Grant's gun is matched with one that killed Audrey Spencer 27 years earlier. The southernmost of the two Norman Shaw Buildings on Victoria Embankment SW1.

A Neighbour (Anita Sharp-Bolster) of Grant's is questioned by Inspector Reynolds (Duncan McIntyre).

The Inspector and Sergeant Scott (Donovan Winter) make house to house enquiries in the hope that someone may have seen or heard something.

Mr. Grabowitsch (Bernard Goldman) is unable to assist.

Every hospital and Doctor in the county was checked for any person having a wound which could have been inflicted by a revolver bullet. Don't start Dave W off on his medical history, just accept the fact that he identifies this as the Westminster Hospital, Horseferry Road as viewed from Page Street, London SW1. (RL)

Finding that Mrs. Grant had moved from her last known address, Inspector Berkeley is driven to Raymond Wood's Estate Agent. Church Street in Godalming, Surrey with the Star Inn to the right and the old Town Hall in the distance. The former Town Hall is also known as the Pepperpot and also makes an appearance in 'The Cross-Roads Gallows'.

David O'Donogue revisited the location.

Sergeant Scott holds the car door for Detective Inspector Berkeley (Ballard Berkeley). Outside 19 and 21 Church Street, Godalming.

Told by the Estate Agent's Clerk that Mrs. Grant was living at number 6 Stanton Road in Godalming, the Detectives drive over. Jamie Sturgeon found that, in the real world, this is Charterhouse Road, Godalming. with number 44 to the right.

Inside the house, Jean Grant tells the Officers that she parted from her husband nine years ago but did visit him on the afternoon of his death. Charterhouse Road in Godalming identified by Jamie Sturgeon.

When a handwriting match is found, Inspector Berkeley and Sergeant Scott make their way to 15 Radnor Drive in Godalming.

Reaching the house, the Detectives ring the bell and the front door is opened by Mrs. Ross.

After Mr. Ross provides an alibi for his wife up when asked about her visits to Grant, the Inspector asks Sergeant Scott to check up on the couple.

Inspector Berkeley heads for Mr. Ross's physiotherapy practice on Cavendish Terrace. Having established the following capture this, Dave says, has to be Upper Wimpole Street, London W1 looking North. (RL)

Paul Lincoln visited the location to find that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle worked and wrote at No2 in 1891. One is left to wonder what he would have made of this films story line. (RL)

Let in by his Nurse, the Inspector asks what time Ross leaves work. Dave W found this to be 1 Upper Wimpole Street, London W1 that can also be seen in LMA 105382. (RL)

Paul was re-assured that the distinctive doorway remains even if the bell pushes have been taken away. (RL)

A Ticket Collector (Douglas Ives) tells the Sergeant that he's sure that Mr. Ross arrived on the 6.27 train on the evening of the murder. Godalming station on the Portsmouth Direct Line between Guildford and Haslemere.

Inspector Reynolds pays Mrs. Grant a visit at the café where she works. The Old House Café on Church Street, Godalming, another location that appears in 'The Cross-Roads Gallows'.

There's little change in David O'Donogue's view, as expected.

Inside the café, Jean is asked to come to the police station after work to identify her late husband's revolver. Church Street, almost opposite numbers 19 and 21 seen earlier.

As on most British streets these days, the growth of weeds is apparent in David O'Donogue's image.

Leaving work one evening, John Ross (Robert Sansom) makes his way to the station to catch his regular train home. Outside Waterloo station in SE1. Visible in the right background is the Festival of Britain’s Station Gate on York Road, one of the buildings that survived for some years after the event closed in October 1951.

Paul Lincoln visited the station and confirms what we all know, document cases have given way to rucksacks. (RL)

Inspector Berkeley follows Mr. Ross into the station. The steps into Waterloo station can also be seen in ‘Inadmissible Evidence’, ‘Private Road’, ‘The Pot Carriers’, ‘Miss London Ltd.’ and ‘No Place for Jennifer’.

As he buys an evening newspaper, Mr. Ross bumps into Inspector Berkeley.

Leaving John Ross to catch his 6.27 to Godalming, the Inspector catches the 6.20 to Guildford. As the sign says, Guildford station, with properties on Guildford Park Road to the top left and Rupert Road on the right.

The 6.20 from Waterloo comes to a stand. Guildford station, one of the main junctions on the Portsmouth Direct Line.
