Lonely House, The (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

In a lonely part of Sussex. a Foreman (Bart Allison) watches his gang make repairs to a little used byroad when Ben Watts (Alfred Maron) finds a body in the vat of molten tar.

Driven from Scotland Yard, Chief Inspector Duggan arrives on the scene to meet with Inspector Parry.

Chief Inspector Duggan (Russell Napier) and Detective Sergeant Conway (Gordon Needham) visit the council yard where the barrels of tar are stored.

Learning that twelve barrels had been sent to the worksite but thirteen had been received, the Detectives make their way to the Pathologist who advises them that the body was that of a woman.

After a Dental Scientist examines the woman's teeth, Detective Sergeant Conway visits one of the ten dentists who hadn't replied to an appeal for information. Park Crescent in W1.

Ringing the doorbell, the Sergeant is let in by the Receptionist to see Mr, Spangler. If it is number 6 Park Crescent, and there's no reason for it not to be, the doorway has since disappeared.

And a window has appeared in its place. SJ

When Sergeant Conway discovers that the arrangement of teeth and the bridgework match Emily Bunter, he and the Inspector drive to her address. Dave W finds the car drawn up outside 20 Leinster Gardens, London W2. (RL)

Inspector Duggan walks up the steps of the residential Glencoe Hotel where the owner Miss Gregory tells him that Miss Bunter left ten days ago and that she had just received a postcard from her in Switzerland. Whether or not it remains, or ever was a 'residential hotel' Dave W reveals that 20 Leinster Gardens, W2 is now 'The Duke of Leinster Hotel'. (RL)

Calling from Scotland Yard, Sergeant Conway advises Inspector Duggan that a man's body has been found in similar circumstances. All the Swiss scenes here can also be seen in 'Mystery at Monstein'. (RL)

Returning to London, the Inspector is told that the man was had a piece of metal embedded in his brain and was wearing a tight signet ring bearing faded initials. New Scotland Yard on Victoria Embankment in SW1.

A report was waiting for the Inspector the following morning indicating that the metal was a shrapnel splinter and that the initials on the ring were JR. The entrance to New Scotland Yard on the road between Victoria Embankment and Derby Gate, what is now known as Commissioner's Yard.

At the War Office, a link was made with the wounded James Robertson of the Black Watch before enquiries at his club revealed that the Major was recently married and had honeymooned in Switzerland. The War Office on Whitehall SW1.

This replaces my slightly off angle shot from January 2023 when conversion was still in full swing. The Raffles hotel at the OWO (Old War Office) opens in autumn. SJ

Patiently and discreetly, the Sergeant got in touch with each of the former Guests at the Swiss wedding but found that none of the people on the list had heard of Major James Robertson or Miss Emily Bunter. Peter Bywaters identifies this as Deller's Florists at the corner of Wimbledon Hill Road and Alwyne Road in SW19. The shop has since been demolished and replaced with an office block with an Estate Agent occupying the ground floor where the florist use to be.

Detective Sergeant Conway was well down the list when something unexpected happened. James Chandler found 88 Portland Place in W1 with the corner of Devonshire Street to the right.

Identifying William Evans, Builder and Contractor, Guildford from a photograph found in the flat, the Inspector and Sergeant Conway drive to the property where they're told that the customer had the work stopped over a year ago before finding a tar stained Jeep in the garage.

Miss Williams (Bettina Dickson) arrives for an appointment with Mrs. Hilton at her Marriage Bureau. David Fitzgerald locates this view as West Street WC2, looking along Litchfield Street towards Charing Cross Road.

After becoming engaged to a generous and considerate Gentleman, Miss Williams packs her case for a trip to see their new house. Looking along Lowndes Place towards Chesham Place in SW1 identified by Geoff Dodd.
