On the South Pier at Blackpool, the elderly Tom Barrett listens to a band playing one of his tunes only to be confidently told by the Women sitting next to him that the composer is dead. Blackpool's South Pier, originally the Victoria Pier, on the Promenade of the Lancashire resort.

The story moves to Manchester in 1878 and a rather grim and grainy panning shot depicts the northern city where Tom's relatively poor parents obtain a piano.

Following his first public performance as a boy, Thomas becomes a Cathedral organist. With the majority of the film shot at Worton Hall Studio at Isleworth in Middlesex, there are just a few external views featuring either stock or second unit footage. This is Winchester Cathedral, The Close at Winchester in Hampshire.

It is not unreasonable to expect those trees to have grown over a period of 84 years. (RL)

Time passes and Tom becomes a music teacher giving private tuition whilst attempting to sell his compositions.

Having found success as Leslie Stuart, Tom takes an extended holiday on the Continent before returning to a life of extravagance.

With his childhood friend Bob Slater standing by him, Tom Barrett makes a comeback shortly before his death. Rather than the real theatre, this appears to be a matte of the London Palladium's façade.
