Man at the Top

The scene moves to a construction site, where Joe Lampton (Kenneth Haigh) reveals to a colleague that he has been offered the Managing Director's job at a pharmaceutical company.

The cage reaches the bottom, and Joe and the colleague emerge. A distinctive-looking building in the background.

Upon starting work, Joe finds something suspicious in the company's files, and sets off in his Rolls to investigate.

Joe heads for the North at the Brent Cross Flyover, Barnet NW7.

Denis Hoare visited the spot to find that the roadsign had been removed and resited much further back. (RL)

Dodging petrol station customers as they arrived and departed, Mark Amies continued his expedition.

Near a bus stop, he sees two girls, Joyce (Angela Bruce) and Eileen (Margaret Heald) hitchhiking to Leeds. Fiveways Corner is a few hundred yards further on.

Re-enforcing the absence of the footbridge Denis took this very similar shot from his car telling us that the bus stop in the capture would have been approximately where the bush is now. The bus stop itself having been relocated about 50 yards further along the road. (RL)

Once again relegated to ground level, of necessity, Denis was forced to capture more of the road than seen in the screen capture. (RL)

They head off to Yorkshire, pursued by Weston.

They go under a bridge in the heavy rain.

Joe and the girls reach a Motel. These scenes were filmed in The Thatched Barn, Elstree Way in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. The building was demolished in 1989 and the Elstree Moat House now stands on the site.

They cross a bridge at the motel. The Thatched Barn also features in 'Night Comes Too Soon', ‘Tomorrow at Ten’, 'Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World’, ‘Hysteria’ and ‘Mr. Ten Per Cent’.

Weston approaches the building, which was also used as a location in episodes of television's 'The Saint' and 'The Prisoner'.

Lord Ackerman's daughter Robin (Mary Maude) rides at her father's country home.

The Ackerman home is a secluded mansion. Ardeley Bury, Hertfordshire.

After hearing her father disparaging Joe, Robin rides off from the stables.

After driving the girls to their parents, Joe visits the Ackerman home at night and confronts Lord Ackerman about Taranath's suicide. Ardeley Bury, Hertfordshire.

Joe passes Robin at the stables.

Reaching Lord Ackerman (Harry Andrews), he demands an explanation.

Joe joins the hunt. Ardeley Bury, Hertfordshire.

The hunt sets off down a path through the trees.

Horses and hounds chase across fields with houses in the distance.

When all is resolved, Joe relaxes in his high rise office. Behind him lies Park Lane and Mayfair W1.
