Cement Garden, The

Jack (Andrew Robertson) and his father (Hanns Zischler, dubbed by Ian Holm) receive a delivery of fifteen bags of cement. This is Greenwich Peninsula, London SE10, on the site of the East Greenwich Gas Works.

East Greenwich Gas Works ceased production in 1976 and the site was cleared. This is now Central Park which was developed from 1997 to 2000, along with the Millennium Dome, to be ready for the Millennium celebrations. On the right is 6 Mitre Passage which was completed in 2009 and 2, 4. 8 and 10 Cutter Lane, completed in 2019.

After school Jack leaves on his own while his sister Julie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) goes off with her friends. Eastbury Comprehensive School, Dawson Avenue, Barking in Greater London. The school is now Eastbury Primary School.

He climbs over the rubble to where he has a secret hideaway. The site of Beckton Gas Works, London E6. Facing south east by the ruins the coke oven quenching tower. This is the one furthest to the west out of the three coke ovens which stood on this site. In the background is the communications tower on Atlantis Avenue. The site is now the sidings on the south side of the Docklands Light Railway Beckton Depot.

Phil Evans provides an approximation of the view, taken from Armada Way, and as close as possible to the depot without being able to gain access.

While Jack is meant to be helping his father to mix the cement, his father staggers as he struggles with the wheelbarrow. East Greenwich gas works site on the Greenwich Peninsula.

As their father is put in the ambulance their mother (Sinead Cusack) is comforted by her daughters Julie and Sue (Alice Coulthard). The house was a set built on the site of the Sulphate of Ammonia store at Phoenix Wharf. The Sulphate of Ammonia store was demolished in 1990. It was seen in 'It Couldn't Happen Here', 'The Yob', (The Comic Strip Presents,,,) and the 1988 'Doctor Who' 25th anniversary story 'Silver Nemesis'.

The development of Greenwich Peninsula continues on East Parkside.

On the way to school Julie tells Jack that he only ever thinks about himself and not their mother. Beckton Gas Works. Facing north west. On the right is the demolished coal bunker for the middle of the three coke ovens which stood on the site. This is now the south side of the Docklands Light Railway Beckton Depot. Beckton Gas Works was also seen in 'Brannigan', 'For Your Eyes Only' and 'Nineteen Eighty Four'.

Jack collects his brother Tom (Ned Birkin) from school. Eastbury Comprehensive School, Dawson Avenue, Barking.

Tom's friend William (Gareth Brown) introduces himself as "just a friend". Eastbury Avenue facing the corner of Cambourne Road, Barking.

After searching through the rubble of the other houses, Jack goes home to get a drink. Greenwich Peninsula. On the left is the No. 1 Gas Holder which was on the east side of the Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach, and on the right is Kelson House, Dagmar Court, E14.

Jack walks home reading 'Voyage to Oblivion', the science fiction novel Sue gave him for his birthday. Pontoon Dock, London E16 facing Cranbrook Point and Dunlop Point on Evelyn Road. They were built in 1967 and demolished in 1998. Dunlop Point and the partially constructed Cranbrook Point were also seen in 'The Sandwich Man'. Behind Dunlop Point can be seen One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, with a few extra storeys superimposed to hide the distinctive pyramid roof.

Tom tells Jack that he is being bullied at school by a boy called Ginger. Bowstring arch bridge, Silvertown By-Pass over Connaught Road, facing east with Drew Road Estate in the background. The bowstring arch bridge was also seen in 'Pool of London' and the Docklands Light Railway now follows the route of the western part of the viaduct.

Jack reads his book (voiced by William Hootkins) as he climbs over the rubble to reach his secret hideaway. Beckton Gas Works. The site of the demolished coke oven seen in capture 4. On the right is the Eastern Gateway Grade Separation Bridge. Planned as a river crossing in 1985. The plans were dropped in 1993 and it was never completed. Beckton Gas Works closed in 1969. This is now the site of the Docklands Light Railway Depot sidings.

Julie turns over and asks Jack to rub sun-tan lotion on her back. East Greenwich Gas Works site with the No. 1 Gas Holder on the right. Behind the Pan statue are the Tunnel Refineries maize silos.

The maize silos were demolished in 2010 and the gas holder in 2020.

The inspiration for the design of the concrete house came from the German Bauhaus architectural style.

Jack sits by the rockery, gazing over the fence at the view of the tower blocks. Sue asks whether they should tell anyone their mother has died. The view over the fence was filmed at Pontoon Dock, opposite the Millennium Mills in Silvertown E16. From the left is Cranbrook Point and Dunlop Point. Reuters, the warehouses and cranes beside the Royal Victoria Dock and the Rank Hovis Empire Mill buildings. A chimney remains at what is now the junction of Rayleigh Road and Wesley Avenue. This area, viewed from Dunlop Point, was seen in 'The Sandwich Man'.

Jack tells Sue that she and Tom would be put into care and the house would stand empty and be broken into. On the left is Blackwall Point Power Station administrative block. On the right is The Pilot pub and cottages on River Way.

The Pilot and the cottages remain, but now the Lower Riverside development fills the area on the east side.

Through the window of a derelict pre-fab house Jack watches Tom and William as they play. In the background is the Blackwall Point Power Station administrative block and the Ceylon Place cottages on River Way.

The pre-fab house was a set built on wasteland which has now been redeveloped as Lower Riverside. The cottages were also seen in the Blur 'Parklife' music video which starred Phil Daniels.

In their game, Tom, dressed in a skirt and wig, is pretending to be Julie and William is Jack. The pre-fab set, with the Blackwall Point Power Station administrative block in the background.

Looking over at the house, Jack sees Julie being dropped off by Derek (Jochen Horst) in his red sports car.

Through the kitchen window Jack watches Derek talking to Julie as she sunbathes on the rockery. The house set, Greenwich Peninsula. To the right of Derek can be seen the Blackwall Tunnel ventilation tower.

The ventilation tower is now incorporated into the 02 Arena.

Derek starts asking Jack questions about his mother. Beckton Gas Works site facing away from the coal bunker quench tower wall and looking towards the ruins of the middle of the three coal bunkers which are seen in capture 7. The same location was used by Stanley Kubrick to depict the bombed out city of Hue for the filming of 'Full Metal Jacket'. Explosives and a wrecking ball were used to create the look of a war-torn Vietnamese city. The site remained derelict until it was cleared for the construction of the Docklands Light Railway Depot which opened in 1994.

Jack dreams about a day at the beach. In the dream his parents and Julie were walking off but he couldn't keep up. West Wittering beach, West Sussex. The directors son, Ned Birkin, was dressed as a girl to play the young Julie.

The same section of beach was seen in the 'Downton Abbey' episode, 'The London Season'.
