Grand Junction Case, The (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

Edgar Lustgarten introduces the 'Trudi Weiss Case'. "In Britain today, there are some 1800 miles of navigable canals. Many of them still used to carry heavy loads between industrial centres, part of a workaday transport system. Yet often with a mysterious, even sinister quality of their own." Looking towards Eyre's Tunnel on the Regent's Canal as it takes the Grand Union Canal under Lisson Grove in London NW8.

This is as good a view point as Richard Bennett could reach.

"About canals in the half-light or fog there can be the quality of nightmares. The sensation that, here, any dark deed is possible." The camera moves right to look down onto the water of the Grand Union Canal at the entrance to Maida Hill Tunnel.

Richard Bennett found that the location retains something of the state of decay of the screen capture.

"A tunnel. Claustrophobic and dank. To the fevered imagination concealing who knows what subterranean horrors." The eastern portal of Maida Hill Tunnel on the Regent's Canal in St. John's Wood NW8.

With no public access to the tow path on either side of the canal at this point, Richard Bennett zoomed in for this view.

After the Angler pulls a woman's leg wrapped in sacking and weighted with scrap metal from the canal, within the hour Scotland Yard are called in. A panning shot begins as Detectives are driven to the local mortuary.

Superintendent Duggan and Detective Sergeant Adams arrive at the mortuary where Dr. Stanton is examining the severed limb.

An Inspector (Victor Charrington), Superintendent Duggan (Russell Napier) and Detective Sergeant Adams (Howard Pays) visit the canal where a meticulous search is in progress. The Grand Union Canal's junction at Bull's Bridge in Southall. The junction also appears in 'The End of the Road' and 'The Criminal'.

Returning to the scene 63 years later, Antony Blair took this view.

Antony Blair captured one man and his dog on the same set of steps leading down to the canal at Bull's Bridge.

Frogman of the Royal Navy take to the canal, each assigned to a measured stretch of water. Jonathan Horswell explains that the piles of railway sleepers in the background are in the GWR creosoting plant at Hayes yard on the western bank of the Grand Union Canal's Paddington Branch in Southall. The yard closed in 1965 and, rather surprisingly, the area only started to be redeveloped in the 2020s.

After a week of effort, luck turns when a Frogman appears from the water with a second weighted bundle. In the background, the Great Western Main Line passes over the Paddington Branch of the Grand Union Canal. The adjacent footbridge has since been removed.

After the pattern of a tattoo is discovered on the arm dragged from the canal, a Detective (Gerald Paris) makes enquiries at homes along the towpath. Bulls Bridge Road in Southall, Middlesex.

Coming to a halt opposite a parade of shops, an Officer broadcasts an appeal for information as Mr. William Smaller (Tommy Godfrey) leaves the butchers owned by James Parris (Dickie Owen). Facing 152 Merton Hall Road, Wimbledon with Harrison & Howells Ltd. at number 150.

While checking boats and barges that use the canal, aboard Bluebell a Detective (Arnold Schulkes) and his colleague Bill find blood stains on the floor of the cabin.

Tracing the owner of the a cabin cruiser, Superintendent Duggan and Detective Sergeant Adams make their way to Mr. Smaller's scrap yard.

Inside the office, Mr. Smaller is questioned about Bluebell and his missing wife Effie.

Receiving information from Interpol about the victim's faded tattoo, Superintendent Duggan flies out to Nice in the South of France. Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France with Promenade des Anglais to the right.

Commander Lemaitre (John Serret) leads Superintendent Duggan to Brown, a tattooist who remembers seeing the design of the flower of the dead woman's arm.

After Brown tells the Officers that Trudi Weiss came to him with her friend Wanda to have the tattoo removed, Police along the Mediterranean French coast search for a witness that may be able to help.

A Gendarme (Walter Henry) and his Colleague question a Woman in connection with the murder committed 900 miles away in London.

The Superintendent returns to England after Wanda is found in a small back street hotel in Nice along with a letter from Trudi Parris. London Airport in Harlington, Middlesex.
