Dover Road Mystery, The (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

After Edgar Lustgarten explains that the motor car is used by police and criminals alike and that their theft is prevalent, a Ford Zephyr approaches the Tele-Radio Services factory.

Coming to a halt outside the works, Herbert Roberts (Leonard Sachs) gets out of his glossy new car.

Less than an hour later, the same Zephyr was driven away along by someone other than Roberts. Located by Peter Bywaters this is High Street in Esher, Surrey seen from outside the Bear Hotel with the corner of Claremont Lane to the left.

Peter Bywaters found that the junction with Claremont Lane has been made wider at the expense of the building on the corner in the screen capture.

The time is just before ten, opening time for the local branch of the Central Bank. Steve Randall identifies the clock as belonging to Wimbledon Town Hall on The Broadway in SW19. The Town Hall closed in 1985 and is currently a branch of Tesco.

Peter Bywaters found that time has moved on . . . . and got stuck at twenty to three!

Outside the bank, the stolen Ford comes to a stand and the occupants enter the building. Facing the corner of Rothesay Avenue and Kingston Road in Wimbledon SW20.

John Harwood visited the new corner outside Wimbledon Chase station. (SJ: half the parade was demolished in 2008 with the further half in 2014 and rebuilt to a higher level.)

Following the hold up, the Robbers gets back into the car. Across Kingston Road, Victor Value is one of the businesses occupying premises in the parade of shops beneath Ad Ex House.

After passer by Mr. Winters is shot during the getaway, the Crooks drive off. Looking north-east along Kingston Road SW20. The location also appears in 'The Strange Case of Blondie'.

Bank Staff and Pedestrians attempt to help John Winters (Fred Machon) as he lies on the ground. The corner of Rothesay Avenue and Kingston Road in Wimbledon, which is also seen in 'Dead Man's Chest' and 'The Blazing Caravan'.

Across the street the Bank Manager (Humphrey Kent) contacts the police and gives them the cars description and registration number. The corner of Rothesay Avenue and Kingston Road in SW20.

The corner now by Peter Bywaters who wondered if the police box was a prop, but according to ghostmonuments.co.uk there was a police box on the corner of Rothersay Avenue and Kingston Road between 13th October 1930 and 5th June 1970.

On the A20 Dover Road, a Police Patrol spots the wanted car as it heads towards the south east.

Despite their best efforts, the Police Patrol can't keep up with the Zephyr.

Assigned to the case, Superintendent Graham (Geoffrey Keen) and Detective Sergeant Webster (Edward Cast) arrive at Herbert Roberts workplace.

Entering the premises, the two Officers question Mr. Roberts about the theft of his car.

Detectives check used car dealers to check whether Roberts' car has been sold on.

Posing as a young couple looking for a cheap runabout, P.C. Green (Anthony Parker) and his Colleague visit car dealer Jack Chambers (Cyril Chamberlain) in Maidstone where they discover the stolen Zephyr on sale.

Chambers lights a cigarette as he leaves Scotland Yard after explaining to Superintendent Graham that he bought the car for cash from a man called Thompson from Wimbledon. The entrance to Scotland Yard on Victoria Embankment SW1.

Superintendent Graham and Detective Sergeant Webster pay a follow up visit to Mr. and Mrs. Chambers. Whitehead's Grove SW3 with the entrance to The Gateways on the right and Sloane Avenue Mansions in the top left distance.

Inside the flat, Mrs. Chambers tells the Superintendent that her husband didn't come home the previous evening. Entrance number 5 of Cranmer Court on Whitehead's Grove SW3.

Discovering that Chambers had been murdered, Superintendent Graham and his Sergeant leave the hospital where Mrs. Chambers is recovering from shock. Looking towards Chelsea Hospital for Women on Dovehouse Street SW3. The hospital closed in 1988 to become the Chelsea wing of the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Now with added trees and blue signs on the entrance. (SR)

Getting into a car, the Superintendent is driven to see Mr. Banks in the engineering department, who had found that the Zephyr had been altered to perform better. Dovehouse Street in Chelsea with the corner of Cale Street to the centre, beyond Chelsea Hospital for Women.

After getting a lead as to the identity of a woman who may have been involved in the robbery, Detective Sergeant Webster walks from the cinema where she is watching a double feature. Outside the Paris Pullman cinema at 65 Drayton Gardens SW10.

Pullman Court at least retained the name. SJ

Leaving the cinema, Janet (Jane Rieger) gets into her car. Outside the garage next to the Paris Pullman cinema on Drayton Gardens in Kensington.

Recognising Janet as Roberts' secretary, Superintendent Graham and Detective Sergeant Webster follow when she drives away. Facing south-east on on Drayton Gardens SW10 with the Paris Pullman cinema to the left. The cinema closed in 1983 and was demolishes along with the garage to be replaced by Pullman Court.

Reaching a farm in the country, Janet gets out of her Austin A40 Farina.

Detective Sergeant Webster walks into the farm to take a discreet look around.

At a motor circuit 15 miles from the farm, Tony (Johnny Hayes) times a car as it speeds around the track. Brands Hatch near West Kingsdown in Kent.

Richard Winchester returned to the circuit and grabbed this shot of the curve.

Having arrested Price and Janet at the farm, Superintendent Graham and Detective Sergeant Webster arrive at the circuit.

A complete rebuild of the subway was found by Richard Winchester.

Held by Policeman, the Superintendent tells Tony to stop the car on its next lap. Other views of Brands Hatch appear in 'Silver Dream Racer' and 'Prudence and the Pill'.
