Dusty Bates (Children’s Entertainment Films)

Following a foggy night time journey up the Thames, the "adventure story for children of all ages" continues as the 2000 ton Tilbury Pride docks at Browns Wharf in the Pool of London after sailing from Hull. Across the river The Monument rises above the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill in EC3.

Monument still manages to rise above the skyline at this angle. SJ

Having stowed away on the Tilbury Pride, orphan Dusty Bates (Anthony Newley) watches the cargo being unloaded as Detectives search the ship for the stolen Bellamy jewel collection. Facing Tower Bridge from Mark Browns Wharf on Pickle Herring Street SE1.

The background has been filling up with the St. Katharine's Docks developments since the 1970s. SJ

Learning that his uncle, deckhand Hank Miller, has been bullied into carrying the jewels aboard by Tod Jenkins, Dusty returns to the ship after being offered a home with Captain Ford and his family. Crossing the background are the warehouses of Mark Browns Wharf on Pickle Herring Street. The shed on the jetty to the left appear in 'The Boy and the Bridge'.

Dockers leave work as the whistle blows for lunch. The warehouse at the junction of Pickle Herring Street and Potters' Fields SE1, which can also be seen in 'Pool of London'.

The walkway was, and a view of Tower of London is, behind the trees. A clearer shot, courtesy of RL, of the tower can be seen in Pool of London cap113. And indeed the camera was about where the right tree is but there was an obstruction there so this is taken a little further back from the north end of Potters' Fields. SJ

Tod Jenkins (John Longden) appears from below. In the background stands the Port of London Authority building beyond the walls of the Tower of London.

The PLA building has been dwarfed by construction to the west. SJ

Creeping across the deck, Tod makes his way towards Dusty who spots the villain before running away. The Tower of London's White Tower and the Henry III Water Gate stand in the right distance across the Thames.

From The Queen's Walk, SE1. SJ

While his mate Walrus blocks the escape route, Tod chases Dusty towards a tall crane on the wharf. Mark Browns Wharf on Pickle Herring Street.

Woken from his snooze, a Docker suffering from toothache is hoisted above the wharf as Dusty operates the crane at the start of the second part of the serial. Crossing the bottom of the frame is the North Tower and Upper Footway of Tower Bridge.

Even on a gloomy day, more colourful. SJ

Dusty, Gill Ford (Billie Brook) and her brother David (Michael McKeag) visit Madame Tussaud's waxwork exhibition where they are followed into the Chamber of Horrors by Tod and Walrus. The building stands on Marylebone Road in NW1.

A wider shot to show that the entrance has changed over the years. SJ

A series of poorly defined night time scenes depict the police pursuit of the lorry that Tod and Walrus have stolen as they drive away from the warehouse where they've been searching through crates for the Bellamy jewels.

In episode three, Stark (Dennis Harkin) keeps watch on the home of Captain Ford.

Across the street, a Sergeant approaches the front door carrying a handkerchief with Gill Ford's laundry mark found at the scene of a car wrecked during the previous night's chase.

Outside the offices of Ixion Steam Navigation Company where Dusty is being questioned by Merryvale the manager, David spots an oddly shaped crate on the back of a truck - the same crate he had noticed in the warehouse while following Tod and Walrus the evening before.

David follows the truck from the yard as the crate is carried away. The corner of Potters' Fields and Pickle Herring Street in SE1.

Hmm, on reflection I may not have the correct orientation here but I feel the original's sun shadow points to a northerly shot. SJ

The truck takes a corner to join the main road. Looking into Potters' Fields from Tooley Street. The library to the left can be seen in 'The Boy and the Bridge'.

I think we're looking at what was a library, now a cleared space on the left, with Potters' Fields Park taking over was a Cooperage. SJ

Calling to the Driver of a taxi, David jumps onto the running board as it comes to a halt. The junction of Tooley Street, Fair Street and Queen Elizabeth Street with St. Olave's and St. Saviour's School as the backdrop.

Now the LaLit hotel. SJ

David climbs into the cab after telling the Driver to follow the truck. Panning right along the frontage of St. Olave's and St. Saviour's School on Queen Elizabeth Street SE1.

Still part of the LaLit hotel. SJ

Urging the Driver to go faster, the taxi approaches Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge Road SE1 with St. Olave's and St. Saviour's School behind the advertising hoardings.

All now developed but, looking west on Tower Bridge Road, there is a glimpse down Still Walk all the way to the rear of the old grammar school on Potters' Fields. SJ

Up ahead, the truck begins to cross the bridge. Looking towards Tower Bridge from Tower Bridge Road.

Quite an iconic view as just in front of the main south tower (through the minor tower arch in the foreground) John Wayne's Brannigan totalled his Ford Capri. SJ

A Policeman steps into the road and stops the cab as the bridge is about to open for shipping. Tower Bridge with Tower Bridge Wharf in the background.

What is known as One Tower Bridge now fills the background. SJ

David pays the Cabbie and runs towards the slow moving truck before climbing over the tailgate. Tower Bridge with the Tower of London in the background.

A good opportunity to display the decorative detail of the bridge. SJ

With David riding with the oddly shaped crate, the truck approaches a gas works. Looking eastward towards the gasometers of Beckton gas works in Beckton E6.

The camera pans left as the truck enters the complex. The railways and unnamed roads of Beckton gas works criss-cross the scene.

A Foreman asks the Driver to unload the crate into a storeroom before catching David as he climbs down from the truck. Inside the Gas Light and Coke Company's Beckton gas works.

Part four . . . . Hank's mate 'Squeaky' Watts (Ronald Shiner) climbs up a ladder at Frank's Café while trying to rescue Dusty, David and Gill after they're kidnapped by Tod and Walrus. The café stands on the corner of Grace's Alley and Ensign Street E1 and was the Royal Standard public house prior to the 1940s.

It's anyone's guess as to how accurate this comparison is. PW

Stark leaves the café following a fight with Tod and Walrus. Looking towards Wellclose Square at the far end of Grace's Alley from Ensign Street, a corner that appears in 'The Stateless Man' and 'A Prize of Gold'.

After telephoning Mrs. Ford to tell her that the children are safe, Hank Miller (Wally Patch) takes David, Gill and his nephew Dusty along the river to the gas works.

Tod and Walrus (Toni Arpino) reach the gas works. The Gas Light and Coke Company's gas works at Beckton E6.

Finding out where the stores are, Tod tells Walrus that they'll wait for the shift to go off before entering. The Gas Light and Coke Company's Beckton gas works to the south east of East Ham on the shore of the Thames at Gallions Reach.

Hank and the kids run across an open space as they make their way to the stores. The Gas Light and Coke Company's gas works at Beckton.

As Hank and the children recover the Bellamy jewels from the oddly shaped crate, Stark appears outside the stores. The Gas Light and Coke Company's gas works in Beckton E6.

Spotting Stark, Hank, Dusty, David and Gill run through the works. The Gas Light and Coke Company's gas works at Beckton also appear in 'Brannigan', 'Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future', 'For Your Eyes Only' and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'.

Knocking him out after waylaying him, Stark leans over Hank's body as Tod and Walrus turn a corner. The Gas Light and Coke Company's gas works at Beckton.

Dusty, David and Gill follow Stark towards the river. The Gas Light and Coke Company's gas works at Beckton. The company was nationalised in 1949, becoming part of the North Thames Gas Board, and the works closed in 1976.

Stark runs down the walkway towards a pier on the Thames. The walkway of South Wharf Pier in Rotherhithe SE16.

Looking back to see that he's being followed by Tod and Walrus, Stark takes a boat from the pier. The 300 feet long walkway ended at a pontoon which was once part of the South Wharf Smallpox Receiving Station. The pontoon was rebuilt after V1 damage during the Second World War.

The children reach the pier in time to jump aboard the launch that Tod and Walrus steal to pursue Stark. Looking north along the Thames from South Wharf Pier towards Limehouse.

Walrus spots Dusty and his pals at the stern of the launch . . . . as the episode ends.

The final part of the serial begins with Tod appearing on deck after Dusty and Gill aim a water hose at Walrus, knocking him into the river.

Tod approaches as Dusty and Gill turn the hose on him. Limehouse Reach, looking towards the warehouses of Lower Aberdeen Wharf off Emmett Street in Limehouse E14.

With Tod washed into the river, David makes his way into the cabin and steers a course after Stark.

Stark concentrates on getting away after he sees the launch gaining on him.

Dusty prepares a water cannon as they catch up with Stark's boat. Greenwich Reach, looking towards the London Power Company's Deptford West Power Station. Electricity generation ceased in 1972 and the site was cleared for redevelopment in the early 1990s.

Taking aim, Dusty forces Stark to abandon his boat with a jet of water. Facing upstream on the River Thames with wharves of Bermondsey to the left and Tower Bridge in the right distance.

Taken on rather a bumpy and blurry Thames ride. Renzo Piano's The Shard, which opened in 2013, has altered the skyline considerably. SJ

After Uncle Hank explains to Captain Ford that Stark is on his way to deliver the stolen jewels to Merrivale, the pair make their way to the Ixion offices. Eden Callaby identifies this as looking along Linton Street towards Arlington Square in N1 with Bevan Street to the right.

Merrivale and Stark lock Dusty, David and Gill in a room when they turn up to tell them what they've discovered as Captain Ford (Bernard Lee) flags down a passing Motorist to ask for a lift. Facing the corner of Linton Street and Bevan Street in Islington located by Eden Callaby.

Panning right shows that there has been rebuilding on the right. SJ

The Captain and Hank are driven at speed through the streets. Linton Street N1 from the corner of New North Road, found with assistance from Eden Callaby.

This is one of several streets with access to New North Road now blocked by planters so I've stepped just inside the junction to show the terrace. SJ

As Stark and Merrivale burn incrimination paperwork when Tod and Walrus arrive at the office, the car takes a corner. Continuing on from Eden Callaby's identifications, this is the corner of Linton Street and New North Road in Islington.

As mentioned previously the corner is no longer accessible for vehicular traffic. SJ

Captain Ford and Hank rush into the building as the untended fire gets out of hand upstairs.

Seeing the children at a window as smoke pours from the offices' upper windows, a Taxi Driver operates a street fire alarm. Recognising the Hanbury Arms public house at the corner of Linton Street and Mary Street N1 in the left background, Eden Callaby identifies this as Arlington Square with the Fire Alarm Point opposite the corner of Coleman Fields.

The pub is still open for business. SJ

After the Police arrive on the scene, the children become trapped by the spreading fire as Hank captures Walrus when he tries to escape.

Bells are heard in the distance as smoke billows from the Ixion offices.

The camera moves to street level as a fire engine turns into the road.

As his Colleagues rush into the building with hoses, a Fireman climbs a ladder towards the room where Dusty, David and Gill are cornered by the flames.

A Crowd gathers in the street below. The quality of the film changes and this appears to be borrowed footage.
