Crime of Honour (A Scotland Yard supporting feature)

Edgar Lustgarten narrates "The criminal who commits premeditated murder is always faced with the problem of what to do with the body of his victim." A dredger working in the Thames Estuary drags up the body of a man along with the sediment and debris. The scene features Stewart Clan, a bucket ladder dredger built at Renfrew in 1936, and Irk, a hopper barge built in 1911 at Bill Quay, Newcastle upon Tyne. Both vessels were owned by the Tilbury Contracting & Dredging Co. Ltd.

When Scotland Yard are called in, Superintendent Duggan (Russell Napier) and Sergeant Conway (Julian Strange) visit the wine shipping business of Watts & Branston after the corpse is identified as John Branston by his sister Agnes. The northern section of Strand Lane in WC2.

King's College has extended over the northern section leading to Strand but this is can be obtained by poking the camera through the very locked gate. SJ

The two Detectives enter the premises where Richard Watts tells them that his partner is abroad searching for new wines. Strand Lane, behind Aldwych underground station on Strand.

Deciphering the make of shoes that the corpse was wearing, Superintendent Duggan flies to Granada in Spain.

Seeking the co-operation of Rovira of the Spanish Police, the Superintendent discovers that the shoes were made for wine grower Señor Rodriguez who had been missing for three weeks. Alhambra in Granada, Andalucía.

While the streets of the city are still crowded with people, Superintendent Duggan returns to his hotel with a growing suspicion in his mind.

Returning to London by sea, the Superintendent arrives at Scotland Yard where he learns that a man named Domingo had been arrested for the murder of Lola, a Gypsy who was assisting with enquiries. Scotland Yard on Victoria Embankment SW1.

Superintendent Duggan and his Sergeant arrive at the home of Richard Watts.

Inside the house the Detectives find the wife of Watts' business partner, Julia Branston.

Tipped off by Sergeant Simms that Watts hadn't left the building after a wine tasting, Superintendent Duggan and a squad of Policemen approach the premises of Watts & Branston. Strand Lane WC2, a back street that can also be seen in 'The Key Man', 'Their Finest' and 'Grimsby'.

I was fortunate enough to visit 5 Strand Lane on the right, home to a "Roman" Bath, now known to be an early 17th century cistern. With thanks to a pair of custodians who stood aside for this shot. SJ

Moving back from the edge of the roof, Richard Watts (Ivan Craig) takes stock of his situation.

When darkness falls, Watts makes his way down the fire escape.

Watts knocks a chock from beneath a pile of heavy barrels and they begin to roll towards him as he attempts to flee from the law. Strand Lane WC2.
